Hi Michael....
They are important becuase these kind of domains are better to optimize for
search enginies according to the name of product or service that they represent.
Example you have a product which its name is px5. Domain px5.com is more easy
to optimize by key phrases as "px5 product" etc.
Of course it is not the only element to be considerer by search engines.. more
than 600 millions of variables ara analyze to evaluate a web site.
cheers

Subject: [webanalytics] Marketing Internet domain names, are these still
important nowadays?
Dear,
Many brands have been used to buy hundreds of domain names relating
to key products (e.g. www.bmw-x5.eu, www.vw-touareg. com,
www.celica.eu. ..) whether they use it or not. In the past, this was
mainly done to protect themselves against potential abuse.
However nowadays with the dominance of search engines and the key
role they are playing in surfers behavior (it is a know fact that
vast majority of people start surfing on Google or their favorite
search engine), none will ever type an URL such as www.vw-touareg. com
or www.bmw-x5.eu or www.toyota-hilux. eu.
Are the "cowboys" times where people would buy URL's wildly are over?
Or they are not? And where does it stop? A brand can buy tens of
different combination of URL's
So today, how relevant is it for a brand to buy long and (endlessly)
growing list of domain names?
I would be interested in your thoughts on this - if anyone has one :-)
Cheers,
Michaël
