Hello,

I'm asked to supply an overlay report for a full flash website. We're
using webtrends as a vendor.

Does someone know if Smart View works for flash website? I presume no.
Is there any other alternative to smart view? Doing the report by hand?

Do you know if Crazy egg or others do?

Many thanks

Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone can help me out with creating a filter for the
below IP addresses. I've never had to do one with '.all.all' before and
want to ensure that I do it right. How do I filter out internal IP
addresses where they are using 176.88.all.all?

Thanks

His idea appears bang on, have you looked through the code for two instances?
I'd use something like grep to do so (which I insinuated in another post), but
there are other pieces of software/methods that would accomplish the same task.

try the following.

Filter name: Your choice
Filter Type: Exclude all traffic from an IP address
IP Address: ^176\.88\..*\..*$

And apply the filter to your profile.

CrazyEgg won't pull the flash either. It will pull in a marker for
where the flash would be.

I once had a thought of ripping the report overlay by time from the
site, and then using that as an overlay in a flash movie as an ugly
hack to try and do what you're talking about.

Might not work well for interactive bits (but guessing where the
clicks are lining up to interactive elements might not be too hard).

Anyway, it's ugly and labor intensive and you probably don't want to
go there. So short answer: GrazyEgg doesn't do the Flash either.

Let us know if/when you find a solution please.

No, Smartview will not work inside Flash movies due to the way Flash is
compiled. I think you might be able to use Click Density Heat Maps, I'm
pretty sure they can work with Flash with some small code adjustments?

SmartView doesn't actually track physical clicks on a link. Instead it
works by doing a mini Path Analysis - looking at the page you are on,
examining the link URL and working out how many people went from the
page you are on to the one the link goes to.

As such, if WebTrends cannot work out the URL contained in the link
then it won't work.

Generally, from my experience, it won't recognise the link if it is
anything other than a standard <a href="url"> style link. If you use
JavaScript in the link or have a Flash site it won't recognise the
link's URL and therefore won't work in SmartView.

The other thing to point out with SmartView is that because it is
using Path Analysis behind the scenes it only tracks visitors who have
cookies enabled and so your figures are likely to be lower than those
you see in other reports.

Regards

Nick

Hi All,

Here is the code that was on the page. I didn't implement this myself but I
noticed that the "pageTracker._trackPageview();" isn't right under
"pageTracker._initData();"

Would that cause the double calls?

<script type="text/javascript">
  var gaJsHost = (("https:" == document.location.protocol) ? "https://ssl." :
"http://www.");
  document.write(unescape("%3Cscript src='" + gaJsHost + "
google-analytics.com/ga.js' type='text/javascript'%3E%3C/script%3E"));
  </script>
  <script type="text/javascript">
  var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxxx-xx");
  pageTracker._initData();
* </script>
  <script>
* pageTracker._trackPageview();

Thank you Julien, Alex and Steve for your answers.

Yes I meant that I have the apache raw logs, and visualize them
through Awstats ;).

In my search for a ballpark number of the number of human visits... I
prefer to have an under-estimated number than a over-estimated one.
Using the raw logs and even with filtering etc... it seems likely that
I will get a number higher than reality (bots are adding a lot).

I am planning on installing GA, let it run for a while and extrapolate
the unique visitors number given by GA to a longer period. I assume I
will get an under-estimated number of the real number of human visits.

Do you think it's an ok approach ?

Thanks,
Fabien

Which implementation guide you are referring to? I've been search

Hi again,
As we move from using a very manual, "bohemian naming" convention for our
tracking codes to a cleaner, numerical system I keep running into one question
that no one I have asked has answered to my satisfaction.
How do you generate and manage the codes?
Currently its easy to know which tracking codes is for what in our current
convention: ?keywords=CampaignName&SearchEngine&Geography&Keyword
Of course this makes for a very unwieldy tracking code. I'm switching to the
more standard ?cid=510384 type of code. Currently I'm manually coming up with
the numerical codes and making sure we have each one classified properly in
SiteCatalyst.
However managing numerical codes manually is not ideal. I know there must be an
automated method that people use, however I have yet to have anyone tell me what
that method might be. Could any of you folks share your secrets with me please?
Thank you :o)
Gabi

I've never typed the code like that, but my first guess is that since
the code is wrong, well, that might be why it's wrong.

Google wants you to have both pagetrackers in the same script, but in
this instance you're running one, closing off the scrip, then starting
another script action. I'm also not sure what the * marks are.

I'd say, before trying to dig deeper into the issue, to please
implement the code as google has given it to you instead of modifying
it. They probably formed it a certain way for a reason, and when you
edit their code and aren't sure of what each change will do, problems
aren't surprising at that point.

So make it look like:

   <script type="text/javascript">
   var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxxx-xx");
   pageTracker._initData();
   pageTracker._trackPageview();
   </script>

Like google presented to you instead of

   <script type="text/javascript">
   var pageTracker = _gat._getTracker("UA-xxxxxxx-xx");
   pageTracker._initData();
  * </script>
   <script>
  * pageTracker._trackPageview();
   </script>

Which is (apparently bad) a change of their recommend install code.

That might not be it at all, but ruling out altered code before more
troubleshooting will only help.

What is your reasoning to switching to "more standard" tracking codes? I
find it easier to use something like ?gaw-{KeyWord} for Google and that way
you know "gaw" stands for Google, and Google will dynamically populate the
{KeyWord} variable with the paid keyword.

You can build 3 classifications from that:
Channel   i.e. Paid Search
Source   i.e. Google Adwords
Keyword i.e. golf balls

The evar is "binding" to the next possible event, so assuming you're only
setting the evar once, it would look like this...

Football: 1 instances, 2 page view events
Baseball: 1 instances, 2 page view events

So Site Catalyst looks at the event, then backtracks to the Most Recent
evar. Since you're setting the event on each page, SC only has to look at
the evar that was set on the same page as that is the most recent at that
point in time.

If you have a retail site, and were looking at the purchase event, Site
Catalyst would look at the most recent evar (football) and allocate 100% of
the revenue to football.

To get better insight, you'll need to learn about configuring those as
"merchandising evars" where, in the purchase example above, each evar would
receive credit for the *product *that was purchased as a result of each
specific search evar value rather than receive credit for the entire order.

Hmm, that is way too complicated.

How about

^176\.88\.

  This captures every IP address that starts 176.88.

Gabi,

I think an alphanumeric code is the right way to go, rather than some type of
naming taxonomy. Prior to outlining my reasons, I must disclose that I am
involved in a company that built a campaign management and tracking solution
that categorizes, updates, and integrates with a few major analytics platforms.

Now, the rationale as to why I think this is the right way to go, and how it
helped my former marketing team manage thousands of campaign IDs during and
after an omniture implementation.

	 * The discipline of having a cross-functional team all create, tag, and assign
tracking IDs various data attributes that were important to our business across
all types of media . . . Not just google!

	 * I didn't need to access development, IT, or analytics resources to generate a
tracking ID.

	 * Very scalable. I can assign hundreds (if you really want to) data elements
to each alphanumeric code. Otherwise, you have to make sure everyone is
following the same naming conventions, and we all know this can create issues.
Plus Omniture allows you to assign new classifications or attributes to existing
IDs, so if I needed to reclassify a click or conversion event as a Direct Mail
campaign instead of a search campaign, I can do it. We worked with someone who
has created over 100K campaign IDs in a very short period of time and can manage
those via their analytics tools, rather than spreadsheets.

	 * People leave jobs, so smart campaign management rules ensures that the data,
historical knowledge, etc stays within the team, rather than a set of file
folders or with vendors. In other words if the campaign ID process is set up
underneath a marketing hierarchy, you should be able to go back to that
information later to college campaign intelligence or operational information.

	 * Easier roll-up of campaign reports. If you set up good data attributes, you
should be able to roll up your campaign data into any combination of data.
Vendor, staff member, media channel, media tactic, campaign goal, etc.
	 * Time savings. My team was spending too much time trying to get access to the
data, rather than actually think about the implications of the data, so we
needed a quick, simple way to create omniture campaign IDs.
OK, I'm passionate about the subject, and I think the time savings are huge for
marketing teams. Not to mention getting marketing, analtyics, and other team
members to talk to each other.

Feel free to contact me directly if you would like more information or pick my
brain further about this subject.

Keyword i.e. golf balls

             Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone can help me out with creating a filter for the

below IP addresses. I've never had to do one with '.all.all' before and

want to ensure that I do it right. How do I filter out internal IP

addresses where they are using 176.88.all.all?

Thanks

Hi everyone,

I've attended the E-metrics at San Francisco last month and I got to see how
helpful networking is, it's not just sharing of experiences but connecting
with fellow analysts as well. I just wanted to see if there are forum
members from Asia, specifically in Manila, Philippines or somewhere close -
Singapore or Hongkong perhaps? I so wanted to attend a WAW but can't always
fly to the US to attend one :) I have the WAW on a Tuesday at the Fluid
nightclub as a benchmark and would really be interested in attending one
from this part of the world ;)

Looking forward to hearing from anyone. :)

Thanks,
M

My Omniture is also very slow - a set of simple reports (25-30) will take up
to 4hours+ at my work location aka "office". However I can do the same set
of reports in just under 45minutes from home. Why ? Faster PC, more RAM
installed, better graphics card, and NO CORPRATE LAN FIREWALL. We tested
this using a colleagues laptop using the LAN and on a wireless bb connx.
Difference was amazing.
Omni is also slow at certain times of the day I've noticed, I'm assuming
"load" but may well be completely wrong.
