(Disclosure: I'm on the WAA Certification Sub-Committee)

I just wanted to make the point (again) that taking the UBC Course (whilst
helpful) is NOT a pre-requisite for taking the WAA Certification Exam.

It is true that the UBC course material was used by the sub-committee when
writing the initial exam questions. However, most questions were revised and
many more added that were not derived from the course material.

I think it would be fair to say that one is unlikely to pass the exam on the
merits of a course alone (UBC or any other). The exam is very much a test of
practical knowledge and will require working experience of web analytics.

Jim Sterne has compiled a list of web analytics training courses here:

Hi there,

Yes, I've used it for an embeddable video player.

There was no problem with facebook blocking the SWF files -- it works
just as it would on any other site, but it's worth confirming with HTTP
watch or Firebug, especially if you're running ads in your app. When you
start testing though, I would strongly recommend that you send the GA
events generated on FB to a new GA profile that does not use the JS API
and is independent of any of your other web domains tracked in GA

Otherwise, if the same flash app can also be embedded on your own domain
(i.e. one tracked w/ GA) there's the possibility that GA will not
properly correlate the SWF data captured on your own site with the JS
data, resulting in overstated session totals, unless you set up a pretty
complicated workaround. From what you wrote below though, it sounds like
your flash app is facebook-specific so this wouldn't apply.

(*disclosure: I'm tutoring the UBC courses)

I agree, in the long run, and if you want to build up your resume, the UBC
training is better and opens the door to pursue toward UC Irvine Certificate in
Web Intelligence.

Basecamp aim is to offer a quick jump-start entry into the field. I have
attended Basecamp twice (as part of my role in education and within the WAA) and
a huge benefit of Basecamp is the level of interactions, anecdotes and focus
during a day or two.

Some people don't like online learning and prefer a face-to-face approach, then
Basecamp is a good start. If you prefer to dig deeper in the concepts, UBC is
better.

Hope that helps,

Thanks Russell,

I am thinking about the certification and moving into Web Analytics as a full
time career path (right now it's only about 1/4 of my job) so I am leaning
toward the UBC award, it's not cheap though, with my non-profit salary, so I
want to be sure it's worth it. I'll definitely check out your blog. Thanks for

We had a similar problem at my last job, but changing the time zone in
AdWords didn't work. We ended up having to contact someone on the GA

Hi Arthur,

You can unlink your AdWords account but in order to be safe I recommend that you
change the time zone of your AdWords account. You cannot do this via the UI, you
have to contact AdWords support for that (and it can only be done once).

Hello,

This is my first post - thanks very much in advance for your help! I look
forward to being an active member.

This is my issue:

I found that our analytics are reading on Pacific Time, but we operate on
Eastern. I found where this would be changed, but I cannot change it because it
says that it is linked to an AdWords account. However, that account is not
active (we have checked and confirmed). Is there any way to un-link it from that
inactive account or change the time zone in another way?

Thank you!

Arthur

Hi Tim,

Unfortunately, we won't have another Boston WAW until 2010 - unless I am
able to find a sponsor for December.

Thanks,
Judah

Bad day in Orem, or is it just us? Our email reports this morning all
say "No Data" and the Sitecatalyst and Discover tools aren't returning
any results. As in spinning.

Anyone else having troubles today?

Happy Veterans' Day, BTW ...

You omniture AM can help you make a small change to clickmap and this makes it
more accurate. I worked with our AM and got it fixed.

As Oleg pointed out, Omniture clickmap has issues and it can be fixed fairly
quickly.

I generally use clickmap for getting a quick heatmap overview of clicks. This is
useful if you want to perform a quick test on landing page links, image or
buttons.

Hope this helps

Hi Jason,

As Oleg mentioned, the none unique links will all show the same click numbers.
This is a known issue in many of the overlay click reports provided by web
Analytics vendors. When doing true heatmap analysis I use CrazyEgg as in defines
each link with it's own ID. The solution is inexpensive and has really helped me
quantify the value of the real estate on my pages.

Dynamic query for the landing page basically spits out the value of the query
variable on that page. If you are able to see it as a text on the page then
chances are Google spider will see it as well.

Here are two ways you can see exactly what the Google spider sees-

1. Google cache version of the page on the SERP

2. "Fetch as Googlebot" feature in the Lab section of the Google Web masters
tool.

Hope this helps.

Thank you!

Arthur

Is anyone experiencing this appearing when testing their tags using HTTPWatch or

Thoughts?

The Research Committee of the WAA is conducting its annual survey on the outlook

Hi James,

Yes, those are the steps I took, but with different results. What I find
most perplexing is that the behaviour of the custom report/advanced segement
combination is not consistent across my site. Sections of my site are driven
by different content management systems and I thought that might be the root
of the problem. I tested various the sections and am seeing the reporting
discrepancies consistently inconsistent.

My guess is it's a bug in Google Analytics. My question now is if I can be
confident in the values being generated by the advanced segments.

Next up for me is a thorough review of the code to see if I've created any
problems there.

Alan

Hi Jason,

It is a known issue with ClickMap. I would use ClickMap only in terms of link
rank on the page. All other page stats should come from SiteCatalyst. Please
note that if you have non-unique links on the page, ClickMap will show the same
click-through numbers for all such links that share the same URL.

Does it help?

Oleg
