Thoughts On The Future Of Content
Oliver Willis

I've been thinking more and more about the real direction of the web,
especially now that the dot com bubble burst and is still spewing
debris on all of us.

I'd like to think that the future of the web, the things that will
succeed, will be in two camps.

One will be the large, commercial monoliths - the AOL/Time Warner,
Disneys, and Microsofts of the world. They have the built in
infrastructure, etc. to keep their legacy-based content accessible to
us all. Some lame stuff, some cool stuff.

The second class will be more exciting. Individuals and small teams
creating truly unique things - whether that be programming, design,
content, writing - whatever. Some of it will be commercial, and some
will be art for art's sake. I think the majority of it will be
successfull - just due to the comfort factor with the medium.

The younger you are, the more influence you will eventually have over
this next sphere.

And that's an awesome thing.

... Been meaning to throw some stuff back on this for a while. While I welcome the side projects, I don't think the majority of it will be "successful", unless...

... Of course what's really happened is that geography used to be an effective filter, now it's not, so we find other ways of filtering for our communities....
