So you've been hosting your free web site on a hard-to-
remember-exceedingly-long-domain-name and have finally
decided to take the plunge and get your own domain and
web hosting. No? Maybe you are simply evaluating your
options and are wondering what is out there. What is
the best option for Web Hosting for you?

Though I may have my opinion of what is best, the purpose
of this checklist is to help you determine what type of
web hosting is best for you, for your business, your needs
and your wants.

1. How much space?

One of the most obvious questions that you want to
answer is how much space you need and how much space
is available with the potential web host. Be realistic
here - if your web site contains full screen graphics
on each web page you are going to need more space than
a web site that is text only.

2. What type of Server?

Determine what type of server you want to be hosted
on. Ask questions of the experts. Do you want Unix,
Windows, or Apple? Do your research before you choose
your web host.

3. Is the Web Hosting "control panel" easy to use?

Even before you answer this question, you need to
find out if the web host offers such a thing. Are
you expected to upload all of your pages separately
or is there the capability to edit your pages through
an "administration page" or "control panel." Do you
have to know HTML or are there templates available?

4. How many POP email accounts are available with your host?

Maybe even more importantly, how many aliases (or
forwarding emails) and autoresponder emails are avail-
able? How many do you need? Are more POP accounts or
autoresponders available for a reasonable charge?

5. Do you have FTP access?

Are you able to upload and download your files via FTP?
Do you want or need this feature? (It is recommended,
but may be weighed against the cost of hosting)

6. Telnet access

Are you able to telnet directly into your server? Do
you want or need this access? (Again, it is recommended,
but may be weighed against the cost of hosting.)

7. How is the Customer Service?

Find out what hours you may contact your web host. How
often is a technician available? Are they available 24
hours a day / 7 days a week? Are they "kind" to you and
attentive to your requests or do they "wish you would go
away?" Also, do they offer a money-back Satisfaction
Guarantee?

8. Is your Web Host dependable?

How often does the server "go down." If there is an
unforeseen server problem, how long does it take to get
your site "back up?" How often is the down time for
server maintenance? What type of notice does the host
provide for routine maintenance? How old is the equip-
ment? Are inefficient servers, equipment replaced?

9. What else does your Web Host provide?

Do they provide a client bulletin board for questions?
Do they provide scripting assistance? How about
search engine submission service? The list goes on....

10. How much will all of this cost?

Now that you have ascertained your needs and wants
versus that which the potential Web Host offers you,
what will all of this cost you? Is it worth it?
Are you ready to pay that amount?
