Optimization Journal this week. We are focusing on
the Key Word selection in this issue - so get your

1. "Search Engine Optimization Journal"
=====================================================

The purpose of this journal is to walk you through
Search Engine Positioning Step-By-Step. We will be
using JustMyKids.com as a "case study" so that you
may learn by example.

First, Gather Together:
° Notebook & Pen (or Your favorite Word Processor)
° Web Position Gold Software

1. Familiarize Yourself Web Position Gold

If you are following along with us and promoting
your own web site, you will want to familiarize
yourself with Web Position Gold, since this is
the software that we will be using for this study.

to use Web Position Gold <===

* Under the "Help" menu, choose
"Download Latest Update"
* Now, choose "Contents" under the
"Help" menu.
* Choose "Step by Step Instructions"

You will now be able to read the step-
by-step instructions that we are using
for this journal

2. Choose Your Key Words

a. Determine how specific you want your search terms

JustMyKids.com Example:
Although JustMyKids.com is a site for Parent's to
obtain their free Portfolio Page for their
child(ren), we do not want to be so specific
(i.e. actors, portfolios, etc.) on our key words
that we do not "catch" the parent that has never
even considered looking for such a site. We want
to attract Parents that may be looking for general
kids stuff in addition to Child Portfolio Pages.

Do keep in mind that it needs to be relevant.
For instance, JustMyKids does offer the ability
for the child to have his or her own email address
(through Mom & Dad) and we do offer discussion
forums for the parents, etc. so we can submit our
pages for more general terms than "child portfolios."

Keep in mind that it is harder to get a good
ranking with a general term. You will rank higher
with your specific key word - but people may not be
searching for that word or phrase.

b. Brainstorm as many words as you can possibly think
of for your web site.

JustMyKids Example:
I chose the following words (among others)
kid
free
talent
actor
portfolio
model
child


c. Find out how frequently these key words are
searched for.

A good way to do this is to use the link that is
provided in your Web Position Gold.

JustMyKids Example:
The frequency of the searches:
kid - 15,781
free - 379,405
talent - 420
actor - 3840
portfolio - 1995
model - 30,891
child - 9,426

Now, what this tells me is that if I want to be
found I should use a key word like "free."
However, it will be difficult to rank with such
a popular key word because so many other people
are already using it. It would be easier to rank
with "talent" but it may not bring very much traffic
because not very many people search for it.

d. Determine which key word(s) you want to use

The other thing I need to keep in mind is that
words like "model" do not conjure up the image of
a sweet child smiling from the web page. When I
investigate further I find that most of the searches
for "model" also include 207,773 searches for
"adult model." Am I going to generate interest in
My Online Child Portfolio Pages if the search is
for a nude model? The answer would be NO.

I will still use the word "model" as one of my key
words, but I will not focus on my attention and
energies and this one key word.

e. Learn By Example

Now that you think you are on the right track with
your narrowed list of key words, visit your favorite
search engine (Alta Vista, Lycos, etc.) and search
for these words.

What types of results do you get?
Are the resulting web sites similar to yours?

Visit the web sites and view what key words they are
using by viewing the page source. Notice I said "view"
and not "copy." I am promoting learning not stealing.
You will also notice that some top ranking sites are
"cloaked" and you will not be able to view their
actual META Tags. If this is the case, move on to the
next one.

Write down your results. You will want to indicate
the web site, URL, Search Engine, ranking, and key
word suggestions.

e. Add More Key Words

Now that you have completed that exercise, look at
your list of results and see if there are any more
key words that you want to add to your list of key
words and start back at Step 2c above.

Well - I think that should keep you busy for a bit.

4. Tip - What is CSS?

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets.

CSS offers you the ability to define the
style that you would like to use for your
entire web site (i.e. margins, color, size,
etc.) You define it once and link it to
each of your HTML pages.

file and other options. It offers uniformity
married to flexibility.
