1. "Search Engine Optimization Journal" Segment 2

JustMyKids.com

Segment 1 (Choosing Key Words):

As you will remember from the last segment
of this journal, we chose the following key words for
JustMyKids.com. We have also included our general
analysis based on our "research."

kid - probably the best choice from this list
free - not very targeted for our type of site
talent - not enough searches for this word
actor - not enough searches for this word
portfolio - not enough searches for this word
model - not the best possibility but an option
child - a good second choice from this list

Did you all finish your "assignment" from last week?
Did you visit the search engines and search for some of
your key words and record the results? We did, and our
"research" is found below:


AltaVista search for "kid"

Number of results: 1,131,425

What types of results do you get?
The top 5 sites were web sites for kids ranging from
sites that help kids search the internet to sites that
are simply "fun" for kids.

Are the resulting web sites similar to yours?
Very loosely related

How far down did you have to go to find a similar page?
I could not find a site like mine in the top 10.

What key words did you find that may work well for your
site?
I did not find any additional key words that would work
well for my site. Words like "games," "puzzles," etc.
do not apply to JustMyKids.com. I will, however, add
"parenting" and "resources" to my current list of key
words.

You don't want to get lazy and just submit a site
and hope it gets at the top.

The hard work, analyzing, and tedious repetition is
what will pay off. Don't Give Up!

Analysis:

The answers to the questions above tell me one
of the following:
* I have a unique site....
* I am looking for the wrong key word...
* A combination of both...

Overall my search for a site like mine using the key
word "kid" was not successful. This may work to my
advantage because I can target the type of audience
that would search for kids stuff. These surfers may
not even think of searching for a site like
JustMyKids.com and may be pleasantly surprised to find
my site that provides free Portfolio Pages for kids.

I viewed the key words used in the sites that ranked
well in the search engines with the key word "kid."
Some of the results were "cloaked" (hidden). But
for the most part the key words were not any surprise.
Simple key words like "kid," "child," "children," etc.
It seemed that the domain names with "kid" in them did
well. This is good since JustMyKids.com has "kid"
in the domain name.

Search for a key word and ask these questions:

Number of results?
What types of results do you get?
Are the resulting web sites similar to yours?
How far down did you have to go to find a similar page?
What key words did you find that may work well for your
site?

Analyze the Results:

Are you finding similar sites to your own?

Do you want to find similar sites to your own?

What types of key words are your competitors using?

What types of key words are your non-competitors
using (if you want to appear in the same key word
search)?

Make sure that you take off your web designer, marketing,
and webmaster "hats" to truly think like an internet
surfer....

The criteria used to determine award winners is grouped

° Content (including relevance, usefulness, etc.)

This past week, while frantically trying to find
office supplies on the internet (in an effort to
save valuable time), I came across Office Depot's
site. Oh, yes, I was familiar with Office Depot,
the store, but not the site.

I was impressed at the load time of the site
(especially when compared to the sites of the
competitors). Also, the ease of use for the
surfer - the browsing method and search method
for finding the office products was impressive.

The content of the site is self-explanatory. It
is an online Office Supply Store. But the design
and functionality seems to exceed the standards
for this industry.
