Welcome to Webmaster Tips Weekly!
Well, I have finally completed the painstaking
one-by-one process of merging the two subscriber
bases of AC Designer and Webmaster Tips Weekly.
I know there are easier ways, but perfectionist
me had to go through each subscriber email and
cross-reference to make sure that nobody would
receive duplicate copies of this ezine. I am
not perfect, however, so if you are receiving
duplicate copies of this ezine, please refer
to the instructions at the end of this ezine.
This issue we have an article by Kevin Davis that
is a great pick-me-up to help you sell better at
your website. Along these same lines, we also have
a guest review by Ted Holmes of Canadian Email
Business Network (http://www.cebn.com/merchants)
on the acclaimed book "Make Your Site Sell."
Anderson Creations is offering Free Form Designs
for our subscribers. These would be basic, generic
forms for you to customize for your web site. Tell
me what type of forms you would like at...
http://www.andersoncreations.com/ezines/wtw.html
We have other interesting items also, CorelDraw 8
links of interest, SPAM reduction idea, Security
vs. Frames document tip, Multiple Subscription Form
script.....I'll let you go now...
Til next week - y'all take care now
Sincerely,
Deborah

What really is
"Customer-focused Selling?"
by Kevin Davis
===============================
By Kevin Davis, President,
Kevin Davis Selling Systems LLC
As salespeople, many of us have been conditioned
to see things through our own eyes and our sales
behaviors are based on these perceptions. Seeing
a buy/sell relationship only through our own eyes,
however, should be a thing of the past.
Faced with increasing pressure to reduce costs
and increase productivity, today's buyers are
more sophisticated than they once were. They are
more knowledgeable, less loyal and more cautious.
Given these changes, buyers will no longer simply
allow you to "sell."
Instead, successful salespeople will be those
who provide information and recommendations, who
anticipate problems and offer solutions, who look
at the sales process as long-term and provide
guidance along the way. In short, the successful
salesperson is the one who gets into the
customer's head and applies a customer-focused
selling strategy.
Buy-Knowing vs. Buy-Learning
In customer-focused selling, a salesperson sees
things from the buyer's perspective and matches
the sales process with the steps customers go
through when making a buying decision. Instru-
mental in adopting this approach is under-
standing the two ways people buy: buy-knowing
and buy-learning.
Buy-knowing: when buyers believe they already
know what they need to know and can make a
relatively quick purchase decision, this is
buy-knowing. A repeat order is an example of
this.
Buy-learning: this method is more complex
because it involves acquiring knowledge and
weighing alternatives to arrive at the optimum
choice. It is certainly the buying process of the
'90s. The advances in technology, continued
change and a multitude of choices means there is
more risk and uncertainty for buyers. Therefore,
there's a greater need to learn about the
available options.
Buy-learning, as I define it, unfolds in a
series of eight predictable steps: change,
discontent, research, comparison, fear,
commitment, expectations and satisfaction. The
effective salesperson understands how to shepherd
buyers through each step of the buying process to
encourage them to make the purchase.
To make the customer-focused selling process
easier to use, I developed a memory aid for
these eight roles of selling. In the buying
process, each step a buyer takes is firmly based
on the preceding step. The more effective you are
providing the correct information at each
juncture, the better your chances of winning the
sale.
The Eight Roles of Selling
1. The Student. For the change step in buy-
learning, you take the role of a student and
study how changes are affecting your prospects
and find opportunities where you can add value.
To make larger and more profitable sales, you
must find bigger and more significant needs. The
prospects' potential value to you will determine
how much time you devote to learning about them.
2. The Doctor. Your role as a doctor is to ask
questions that diagnose your customers'
discontent and uncover their needs. Discontent
occurs with prospects recognize that where they
are now is not where they would like to be. A
problem or an opportunity can cause discontent,
and it is critical look at both. As a doctor,
you diagnose what ails your prospects, and
identify the complications that are likely to
affect the prospects if they do nothing to
resolve their discontent.
3. The Architect. Here, your role is to design
unique solutions that simplify your customers'
research steps while setting the ground rules in
your favor. Help them by translating their
tangible concepts of what they need into more
definite buying criteria.
To move from a general concept to a specific
plan, you can use the same four steps an
architect uses: 1. Understand the client's
intangible concept of need. 2. Determine the
must-have requirements necessary to achieve the
concept. 3. Refine the concept by identifying
"nice-to-haves." 4. Determine the relative
importance of each nice-to-have to the client.
4. The Coach. As your prospect compares your
offering to that of the competition, your goal
is to defeat your opponents without cutting price.
A coach gains competitive advantage through
analysis and insight, then executes a winning
game plan.
The steps that will help lead you to victory
include: 1. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses
in comparison to those of your competitors.
2. Develop a game plan to positively position
yourself against the competition. 3. Demonstrate
your superiority on the playing field with a great
sales proposal and presentation.
5. The Therapist. The therapist draws out fears
and helps resolve them. The closer people get to
making a major commitment, the more they focus
on the future consequences. Be on the lookout for
indications that the prospect is getting nervous.
To detect fear, you must be sensitive and
observant. Take time to review how things are
going. Is anything out of the ordinary happening?
Once you have detected fear, you must determine
its source. This is not always easy and may
require a bit of risk on your part. Raise the
issue if you think it is causing fear and help
your prospects by weighing options and discussing
alternatives.
6. The Negotiator. The goal here is to reach
a mutual commitment to open a relationship, not
to hammer close the sale. Negotiation is a
discussion designed to reach an agreement between
parties who share some interests but are at odds
on others.
Here are some key points to consider as you
negotiate the commitment: 1. Prepare to negotiate
by determining what you want from the agreement
and by generating a list of high value con-
cessions other than price. 2. Reach agreement by
clearly identifying your customers' interests,
determining areas of agreement, and creating
win-win solutions to resolve differences.
3. Ask for commitment in a non-manipulative way.
7. The Teacher. Immediately after the customer
buys, the salesperson helps the buyer get a clear
understanding of his or her expectations and to
know when and if value has been achieved.
Salespeople can help on both fronts by adopting
the role of a teacher.
First, in customer-focused selling, the
objectives agreed upon must be realistic and
measurable. Once these goals are set, it is up
to you to manage your customers' expectations
and teach them how to attain their objectives.
The key here is to make sure your customer
knows how use your product or service properly.
Test for value to make sure your offer provides
what you said it would.
8. The Farmer. The role of the farmer is to
cultivate satisfaction and to grow the account.
Today, companies striving to be the best have
made customer satisfaction and retention their
cornerstone business strategy. To survive and
thrive, you must get closer to your customer,
not just during the sales process, but after it
as well. Your customers form a perception of
satisfaction based on four factors: value
achieved; product quality; service quality;
and price.
The challenge to salespeople is that while
customers may be satisfied with all or some of
these points today, their opinions may change
tomorrow. Cultivating a good relationship with
customers will pay benefits again and again down
the road.
As customers become increasingly sophisticated,
successful salespeople will be those who modify
their sale strategy accordingly. Customer-focused
selling means you must get into your customers'
heads, finding out what they are thinking and why,
and get your sales process in sync with customers'
buying process. That is customer-focused selling.
Give it a try, and you'll certainly win more
sales and give your competition fits!

Quick Tip from the Editor...
Thought of this one while ordering...
Don't put your secure order form in a frames document.
It may be a secure order form, but some browsers will
not "register" it as a secure document. This may
produce a lack of trust on the part of your potential
customer - may produce "No Sales." Instead, hyperlink
to a non-frames secure order form

E-Commerce On A Shoestring
by Deborah Anderson
===============================
This article is written out of the experience
that I had setting up our e-commerce enabled
web site on a shoestring budget. It is not
the only way and it is not necessarily the
recommended way either, but this article may
be helpful in guiding you along the sometimes
confusing path to a more dynamic e-commerce
enabled web site.
For the sake of keeping this article as brief
as possible, definitions for many of the terms
below are NOT provided. If you have any
questions as to what is being discussed, please
email your question to mailto:danderso@...
1. Choose the Company and/or Bank
Although there are many quality companies out
there that will help you set up your merchant
account and credit card processing system, we
found that Webtranz was the most economical
(http://www.webtranz.com/cgi-bin/affiliate/banner.cgi?790).
Some of the other companies may hold your hand
and guide you throughout the system in a little
more detailed manner, but will cost more. For
a sampling of companies to choose from see the
Featured Links column below.
2. Ask Questions
Is there an application fee and credit check?
What are the batch fees?
What is the per transaction percentage fee?
(this varies depending on your industry)
Do they set up the Merchant Account for you or do
you need to contact a bank?
No - Contact Your Bank first
Yes - Ask the following questions:
Is there a monthly bank charge?
Is there a monthly sales minimum?
Will you be charged if your sales fall
below the sales minimum?
3. Determine what type of processing that you
wish to do.
Are you a retail store also? You may want a
swipe card system.
Are you desiring to process the credit cards
with your computer hooked up to a modem?
You may want the software option for your
particular computer.
Ideally you want real-time-processing which
will provide you, the merchant, with the
payment right away, without you being present
and without you having to transmit the payment
information yourself.
This is not always the most economical method
if you are extremely limited on funds when
starting out. You may transmit the payment
information via the hardware or software method
mentioned above after the order is placed and
before the product is delivered.
You may always upgrade to a real-time-processing
system when your profit margin increases. For the
purpose of this "shoestring" article, we are
assuming that you are not using real-time-processing
immediately. Also, it must be noted, that, for
obvious reasons, this method does not work if you
only check your email once a month.
4. Do you have access to a Secure Server?
Your potential customers will not want to
provide you with credit card information if your
server is not secure. You may opt to apply for
your own Security Certificate if you like
(http://www.verisign.com), but this can be quite
costly. We opted to lease Secure Server space
directly from our Host, Virtualis
(http://www.virtualis.com/vr/danderso).
When determining whether or not to lease secure
server space you need to ask the following:
What is the application fee, if any?
What is the monthly fee?
How much space is leased?
Is there a personal cgi-bin directory available
on the leased space?
If you decide to lease secure server space,
you will need to upload any scripts that you
will use to the secure serve along with all
order forms that you decide to use. Note:
If you use a script like formmail.pl
(Matt's Script Archives * Free Script *
http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/) to
process your order forms, but use the script
on a non-secure server, your customer's data
is NOT SECURE during processing. You will
need to have the same script in a cgi-bin on
the leased secure server. If you are not
provided with a cgi-bin on your leased space,
don't lease.
5. Shopping Cart System or Secure Email System
If you are requesting data on a secure server
with a secure script you have one more security
concern - how is the data being transmitted?
Option One: Shopping Cart System
Most shopping cart systems will "automate" the
ordering process with configurable features such
as determining quantity figures, postage and
handling, and applicable state tax. In addition,
most shopping cart systems can be configured to
save the order data securely on the secure server,
notifying the store / web site owner via email
that there is a order awaiting them. In this
manner the order is never transmitted insecurely
via normal email.
There are many shopping cart systems available
in varying price ranges and varying capabilities.
I recommend minivend (http://www.minivend.com)
because it is free. To use it you will need to know
something about cgi scripts, but there is a lot of
support from other minivend users which is available
through a discussion list.
Option Two: Secure Email System
LqidSkin (http://www.lqidskin.com) offers a free
script to encrypt the email that is received when
an order is placed. It is called Encrypt-It.
There is also a Professional Version available.
Using this method, you may use a script like
formmail.pl stored in the cgi-bin of your secure
server, in combination with Encrypt-It and use a
basic order form to collect orders and payment
information.
6. Create Order Forms
This is not necessary if you use a commercial
shopping cart system. The forms will be created for
you in most cases. These would vary according to how
good the program is, how much money you spent on it,
etc.
If you are choosing the simple method and using
Encrypt It to transmit your order emails, you can create
some very simple order forms in a basic HTML editor. To
see an example of a form that we use, go to:
https://caolson.virtualis.com/acreations/bannerorder.html
7. Accepting Checks Online
For this, I recommend that you use an external company
rather than processing the checks yourself. In this way
you are utilizing their very detailed instructions for
the consumer to follow when filling out an online check.
We chose ValidCheck (now ValidPay) due to their lower
application fee and lower monthly rates
(http://www.ValidPay.com/default.asp?RefWord=ACREATIONS)
See review below.
8. Consider an All-In-One package
An example of this would be the new features of
ValidPay.com where you can accept credit cards and
checks in one package. This may be a very economical
choice if you are just starting out. You may bypass
steps 3 and 4 and possibly others depending on which
program you choose. Again, see review below.
Well, I hope that covers it. If you have any
questions, don't hesitate to contact me at

ValidPay - the answer to online processing
http://www.ValidPay.com/default.asp?RefWord=ACREATIONS
In ValidPay's own words...
>What is ValidPay? ValidPay allows you to safely
>accept real time credit card and check payments
>from your website, while utilizing IFDS™ a defense
>against fraudulent payments.
Some features of ValidPay:
* Easily present online bills to customers
* Accept Checks online
* Accept Credit Cards online
* Real-time Processing
* No need for machine or processing software
* No need for leasing a secure server - this is included
* Defense System (IFDS) which performs detailed
validations on each customer who uses system
ValidPay does require that you have a merchant
account already set up. They have a few merchant
accounts that they partner with that may be
recommended to you, or you can shop around and
find a merchant account yourself.
Also, there is an application fee and monthly charge
for this service. This will vary depending on if you
sign up for check processing, credit card processing,
or both.

I don't know how many of you may or may not
use Netscape Communicator to compose and publish
your web pages. I personally wouldn't use anything
else! I love to tweak my pages to the Nth degree
and find that Netscape Communicator gives me that
full capability with no limitations.
The only feature of Netscape's software that is
not necessarily ideal is that in order to edit the
HTML code I must open the HTML window (which, by the
way, takes a while) and then edit it. This does not
allow me to cut and paste and it is very slow.
What have I done? Whenever I am working with HTML
code, especially that which is derived from other
sources, I paste it into a blank Adobe Pagemill
document under the edit/HTML mode, save it as "x"
and open it with Netscape Composer. I can then
tweak it to my heart's content and it takes me
seconds compared to the old method

1. Featured Article
Common Sense
by Bob Osgoodby
-------------------------------------
No this is not an article written by Thomas Paine -
His pamphlet, Common Sense (January, 1776), was one
of the memorable writings of the day, and helped the
cause of American Independence. We are talking about
using common sense when surfing the net.
People in cyberspace may not always be what they seem.
Someone who is sharing a "friendly" tip about a money-
making scheme or great bargain in a chat room or on a
bulletin board, may have an ulterior motive. Sometimes
those friendly people turn out to be crooks!
Don't judge reliability by how nice or flashy a website
may seem. Anyone can create and promote a website. One
can be created with relatively little effort and expense
in just a day or so. Once they have exhausted their
particular scam, they can disappear just as quickly.
Many times, when visiting a web site, you will be
given the option of downloading a program to see
pictures, hear music or get other features from their
website. You should never download programs like this
from websites you're not familiar with. You could
unwittingly download a virus that wipes out your
computer files or even hijacks your Internet service,
reconnecting you to the Net through an international
phone number, resulting in enormous phone charges.
Unsolicited e-mail not only violates computer etiquette,
it is often used by con artists.. Reporting "spamming,"
as unsolicited e-mail is called, to their online or
Internet service provider was once a viable defense,
however today it is less effective. Many con artists
use fraudulent E-mail addresses and attempt to get you
to respond via "snail mail" or to call their toll free
number. If you are tempted by their offer, reply to
their E-mail and if it is returned as undeliverable,
walk away.
Don't provide your bank account numbers, credit card
numbers, social security number or other personal
information unless you know the company is legitimate
and the information is necessary for the transaction.
Even with partial information, con artists can make
unauthorized charges, deduct money from your account,
and impersonate you to get credit in your name.
Do business with companies you know and trust. Be sure
you know who the company is and where it is physically
located. If they will not provide this information, you
should be leery.
Above all, use common sense. Perform "Due Diligence"
with those offers that just seem "to good to be true"
as they most likely are.

Welcome to Webmaster Tips Weekly!
This week we married two of our ezines.
This one - Webmaster Tips Weekly and
AC Designer.
What was the difference between
the two ezines, both for webmasters?
AC Designer was focused on design aspects
for web site development and was published
twice monthly. Webmaster Tips is a
broader based newsletter going beyond the
design elements into other aspects of interest
for the Webmaster.
What does this marriage of ezines mean to
the subscriber? The tips etc. that would normally
have appeared in AC Designer will now be
incorporated into Webmaster Tips Weekly and
periodic issues of "AC Designer" which focus
more directly on design issues will be published
on an as-developed-basis (no more than once monthly).
This issue we have an article by June Campbell
that focuses on developing a business plan that
will help you analyze possible (& probable) risks
and counteract these risks to turn them into
profits. A definite must-read if you are developing
or re-developing your business online!
In the last issue of AC Designer we announced
that we would be focusing on encouraging interaction
from visitors when developing web site design, we
will proceed with that focus throughout future
issues of Webmaster Tips Weekly. First, as promised,
we will feature a recommendation script in our
review & tips section below.
Til next week :)
Sincerely,
Deborah * Anderson Creations

1. Featured Article
Analyze Your Risks and Prosper
by June Campbell
-------------------------------------
Analyze Your Risks and Prosper
When I started my full-time business, I
enrolled in a class with a group of
other wanna-be entrepreneurs to learn
how to develop a business plan.
One component of writing a business plan
is risk analysis -- i.e. the identification
of existing or potential threats to the
success of your new business. You identify
all possible events, happenings or occurrences
that might stand between you and business success.
Then you develop a strategy to combat each one.
One classmate said that she was a believer in
the power of positive thinking and that she would
jinx her business by thinking about the negative.
Another refused to identify threats because "I get
depressed when I think about what could go wrong."
A third person simply said that his business idea
was perfect and that there were no "downsides" to
consider.
All three businesses failed before they reached
their first anniversary.
These three entrepreneurs are not alone. I am
often asked to assist with business plan or
proposal writing and I'm always surprised to see
how many people are unwilling consider potential
problems.
There are two excellent reasons why your planning
should include a risk analysis.
1. No matter how great your idea may be, there's
no such thing as a risk-free business. The risks
are there whether you admit it or not. Successful
entrepreneurs face these challenges in advance and
devise a strategy for handling them if the time comes.
2. If you are hoping to raise money, get a business
loan, or attract a sponsor, the money-people won't
allow you to use their hard earned cash until they
are satisfied that you have done your homework. To an
investor, risk analyses is a sign of good planning,
not an indication that your business idea is a poor
one because there are potential threats.
Convinced of the value of risk analysis? Start
by asking "what if." Here are some examples to get
you started.
1. What if your direct competitors find a way to
undersell you? What will you do to remain
competitive?
2. What if your direct competitors become so
numerous that no one can make much profit?
3. What if you indirect competitors seize the
lion's share of the market? Indirect competitors
are businesses providing a different service than
you do but still competing for a share of your
customer's dollars. For example, if you are
selling books, indirect competitors are magazines,
newspapers, content-rich web sites, electronic
books, etc.
4. What if your suppliers raise their prices, go on
strike, or go out of business?
5. What if your suppliers can't keep up with the
orders you are receiving?
6. What if you experience theft, vandalism, fire,
or damage caused by "Acts of God?"
7. What if you get caught in a "cash flow" crisis?
This can happen if you tie up cash with equipment,
inventory, etc., but sales are slow or customers
are slow in paying.
8. What if your employees unionize?
9. What if delivery costs escalate?
10. What if import or export regulations change?
11. What if future trends affect your business? In my
area, once-prevalent muffin shops are closing down
and coffeehouses taking their place. The muffin
trend is out, the coffee house trend is in.
12. How might changing technology impact your business?
For instance, many small web designers are feeling
the pinch as a consequence of software developments
that make it easier for people to design their own
sites. The web designers who find a strategy to
remain competitive will survive.
13. What seasonal influences might you be facing?
14. What if your bank, your suppliers or your customers
aren't prepared to handle Y2K issues?
Identify your problems in advance and you'll be a winner.
Remember the old saying, "If you fail to plan, you plan
to fail."

appeared in a several international print publications.
She also provides business writing services as well as

Birdcast.cgi
Recommendation Script by Bignosebird.com
http://www.bignosebird.com
This script, provided by Bignosebird.com
for free is a great little script to use
to encourage your visitors to recommend
your web site to up to 5 friends or
associates at one time.
To see this script in action, go to
http://www.andersoncreations.com/ezines/go.shtml#6
and recommend the web page to yourself by entering
your own email as both the sender and the receiver.
Hint: Try a different name for the "receiver" to
see how this script works.
I think the best "selling" feature for this Free
script is the ease of use and ease of installation.
Yes, you can get more sophisticated scripts, but
they may require more "thinking" for the amateur
and more headache for the webmaster who doesn't
particularly care to become a programmer on the
side.
Some features:
* Option to configure a link or form for script
* Option to set up a log file for the webmaster
to keep track of referrals
* Ability to set up customized email
* Ease of use for web site visitor and webmaster

Birdcast.cgi Script Configuration Tips
from Anderson Creations:
http://www.andersoncreations.com
The readme file that comes with this script
is very easy to understand. Also, the script
itself includes easy-to-understand instructions.
The trickiest part of the configuration that
I found was determining the method of commanding
the mail program. The script lists 2 options, I
have included those 2 plus an additional one.
My recommendation is that you configure the script
the way you think your mail program on your server
is set up and then test it. If it doesn't work,
try one of the others. You may want to refer to
other scripts that you have installed to see how
those scripts access the mail program. The 3
options are:
# $SMTP_SERVER="localhost";
# $SEND_MAIL="/usr/lib/sendmail -t";
# $SEND_MAIL="/usr/sbin/sendmail";
Be sure to leave the semi-colon (;) and to remove the
number sign (#) of the line that you use.
The rest of the configuration is so simple, that
I would simply be quoting it here. You may
download your script at http://www.bignosebird.com.

Welcome to Webmaster Tips Weekly!
Can you believe it is the end of July
already? I am already planning my Christmas
list. Woah---- let's keep this nice weather a
bit longer...
Let's see what do we have for you this week...
(she says as she thumbs through imaginary
papers...)
Nancy Roebke has provided an excellent article on
Email Cliques. Her no-nonsence-get-in-there-hold-
your-head-up-high method is very refreshing.
You'll also find a review on Corel's Designer.com
a very resourceful web site.
Are you "into" scripts and interactive programming?
Or, desire to be? Don't miss the Featured Links
section. (Hint - you won't want to miss the next
issue of AC Designer either :) )
There's also some submission tips and tracking tips
in this issue.
Before I finish, I want to say it is continually nice
to receive your feedback, like this one from Jan of
Tallent Agency (http://www.jtdbizopps.com),
>Hi. I want to thank you for featuring my web pages in
>your ezine today. I really appreciate the exposure
>and hope I can reach lots of "newbies" before they
>make some of the mistakes I made while learning my
>way around internet marketing. It means a lot more to
>be featured in such a nice ezine than any amount of
>ads I could run bragging about myself or my pages!
>thanks again and this is a terrific resource and thank
>you for letting me be a part of it.
Thank you Jan! You bring a smile to my face :)
Til next week - y'all take care now
Sincerely,
Deborah

Breaking into Email Cliques
by Nancy Roebke
-------------------------------------
Networking in public forums has it's challenges with
how to get into the small groups that tend to form
within the large group. One of the best ways is to
have someone help you with introductions. What do you
do when the same thing happens to you on a list where
there is no in-person contact and no "gatekeeper" to
make a way for you?
Here's what happened to me on the very first list
I joined with the very first post I made. I posted to
a list on a controversial topic that had come up. My
post reflected very personal material and involved
using a member of my family as an example of why I felt
the way I did. I got a response back from one member of
the list saying I should run quickly from my opinions
and that the member of my family was a "lunatic" for
expressing the same sentiments. This response was posted
to the list and not to me privately. I was embarrassed,
surprised, humiliated, confused- you name it, I felt it.
That was seven months ago. I am now considered one of
the "old" list members, my name is recognized by most
list participants, I have gotten business and right now
sit on the Board for a major project that is underway on
that list. I had all I could do when that post came out
seven months ago, not to walk away from that list and all
other lists because of that one response.
How did the change occur? Here are the steps I took to
get from that post to reaping the benefits of list
participation:
1. I sent a private post to the sender of the offending
post. She never responded.
2. I received several private posts about how unkind
the post from the other member was and I responded
with "Thank You's" to all of them. In those posts,
I asked questions about the businesses of the people
sending me these kind posts and began to build
relationships with them.
3. I never posted a rebuttal publicly on the list.
Many people did, and I also would respond privately
to them and ask about their business.
4. I waited a while.. probably a month or two before
posting again, and this time I picked a topic that
I knew a lot about and positioned myself as the
expert in that field. I got a few responses and
always posted responses publicly that would help
THE GROUP MEMBERS.
5. During my waiting period I sent Virtual Postcards
to everyone who introduced themselves, welcoming
them to the group and offering myself to them as a
friendly ear if they needed it. In these postcards,
I also asked for info about their businesses. This
was one of THE best relationship-building tools I used.
6. I would post information I had found on the Internet
that might be of interest to the group. I also posted
a few humorous posts. These always got me private
responses that I would also answer in the manner above.
These mass, non-specific, non-threatening posts were
probably what started my name recognition within the
group.
7. I read posts from other members and when their
opinions or presentations mirrored my own, I would
send a private response of encouragement to them. I was
building a circle of like-minded individuals . These
individuals also only posted to the list with similar
information to mine. I noticed that over time as I read
their posts.
8. From this work, I was invited to join the Board of a
significant project underway from this list. This was a
direct result of the responses I made to the like-minded
members of the group.
9. I did not get involved in any controversy or flaming on
the list - not even to make an "enough is enough" post
about it, even when I felt that way.
10 To this day, I only post to the list with general info
or on a topic I know a lot about. The rewards from the
list from my behind-the-scenes work more than make up
for the rude welcome I received from one member.
The answer to the challenge is in the relationship-building
steps that are taken. A list has a lot of appeal because of
the volume of people you have exposure to. But the chances
of building relationships with all those people are slim
and none. The chances of building relationships with a person,
one person at a time are very real, and well worth the effort
it takes to do so.

Corel Designer
http://www.designer.com
Wow! You really have to view this web site
yourself to get the full value out of this
web site.
>From a designer's aspect this web site offers
a lot to be learned - a goal if you will - for
web site improvements.
For example...
I (Deborah) have added a mousever javascript
effect on my subscribe page located at
http://www.andersoncreations.com/subscribe.shtml
This feature allows the viewer to see a description
of the ezines etc. without leaving the web page.
Corel took this one step further and have a
java mouseover graphic which is really quite
appealing. Now I know what I am re-designing
next!
>From a content vantage point, Corel also offers
many benefits to its viewers. Not only the Corel
users, although obviously that is the goal, but
also non-Corel users who can benefit from freebies
like picture and clip art.
I would recommend this site for both the designer
seeking to learn something about design and the
surfer wishing to investigate available resources
on the internet.

The following tip was provided by
Jan Tallent-Dandridge
Tallent Agency
http://www.jtdbizopps.com
>You really can get a good response from
>placing free ads, submitting your urls to
>ffa sites and using traffic generators.
>You need to track the response from each kind
>of advertising you use. I have found, for myself
>anyway, that newcomers seeking business
>opportunities or affiliate programs search the
>ffa sites and answer those ads. More seasoned
>marketers seem to favor ads and traffic generators.

Tracking Tip from Anderson Creations:
http://www.andersoncreations.com
Reading Jan's tips (above) reminded me of this
tracking technique that we use - it may be
helpful to some of you.
Do any of you do ezine or link exchanges
whereby you invite prospects to either
subscribe to a publication or send for
more information? In other words, do
you use autoresponders?
Let me tell you what we have done.
We use egroups.com for the 6 groups
that we manage (3 ezines, 1 newsletter,
1 safe opt-in free adverting list, 1
discussion list). We use a checkbox
script to facilitate multiple subscriptions
from one form. This script then forwards
the visitors inputted email address to
autoresponder "subscription confirmation"
autoresponders for each of these publications.
We use Sendfree. At the end of the day,
when we receive a digest from Sendfree
indicating who has accessed the autoresponder,
we know who to subscribe to which egroups.
How do we track? Very simple.
When we exchange an ad with another ezine
we include the subject which then shows up
in the SendFree digest.
Let's say for instance that one of our ads
runs in XYZ ezine. We would provide a blank
email link of
mailto:subscribe_web_tips@...?subject=XYZ
for the subscription email address.
When we receive the digest from Sendfree we
will note how many requests had a subject line
of "XYZ" and we will be able to determine if the
ad in XYZ was effective and have an ability to
measure the effectiveness.
The following are resources that we use:
Sendfree...http://www.sendfree.com
Checkbox Script...

Welcome to Webmaster Tips Weekly!
It's been a long, tiring, but worthwhile
week. We opened up our new ezine directory
EzineLinks@AndersonCreations this week at
http://www.andersoncreations.com/ezines/directory.shtml
and after receiving so many kind comments from
publishers, I am "all talked out." Yeah, like
I ever run out of words... :)
Anyway...
This issue we have an article by Jim Daniels -
a very basic overview of ezines. We also included
some links for ezine development and promotion.
There are only 3 links of this kind, but they will
lead you to many more resources. (I better stop
before I beginning telling you the links here.)
Don't miss the review on Marlene Klein Cosmetics
and the Featured Link - Mook Productions. Also,
there is a terrific tip on how to create your
own error page. I am going to do that for my
web site this weekend.
Well, until next Friday - Have a great weekend!

1. Featured Article
The Ezine Explosion
by Jim Daniels
-------------------------------------
Ezines are rapidly becoming one of the most
popular marketing tools on the internet! An
ezine is an electronic magazine or newsletter
like our BizWeb E-Gazette. The number of
ezines on the net has exploded from a few
hundred in 1993 to a number well into the
thousands in 1998. There are ezines on thousands
of different subjects!
Before I go into details on ezine marketing, I
must first explain the difference between the two
very distinct types of ezines on the net.
The first type of ezine is basically a web site.
Anyone that has the URL, or web address can check
out the ezine. Some are free and others charge a
subscription fee. Although this type of ezine is
very nice to look at (graphics and sometimes audio
included) the marketing value is not nearly as
strong as the next type.
The next type of ezine is delivered directly to
your email address, like our gazette. That's what
makes it so popular with online marketers. Since
people don't have to actively seek out each issue,
the marketing value is boosted greatly.
These "email ezines" have begun to grow in number
very rapidly, as more and more people jump on the
internet. Most of these are free and are delivered
weekly. Although not as fancy as a "web ezine", (most
email ezines are currently text only) this type of
ezine has proven to be an excellent marketing tool.
Take a look at the advertising section of your
favorite email ezine. The reason there are so many
ads there is simple... ezine advertising works! Not
only do you reach your target audience, you reach
them by the thousands. Of all the online marketing
methods available, this could be the most effective.
Many larger companies are just starting
to realize this and are starting to explore this
exciting new advertising medium. Compared with the
high costs of web site banner advertising,
ezine advertising is a bargain!

Marlene Klein Cosmetics
http://www.marleneklein.com
In Marlene's own words, she says to
>Visit MarleneKlein.com for Lipstick, Blush,
>Foundation, Eye Shadow, and more. Lots of
>tips, links, and a doctor's column. Marlene
>Klein - a department store quality brand...at
>internet prices! Let us be your place for
>make-up on the Web!!
I took her up on it and viewed her site. It is
very nice! She has all of the expected categories
(lips, blush, eyes, etc.) in addition to color
selection and even a doctor's column, as she
mentions above.
What really impressed me was the quality of her
site. No, I am not talking about design here,
although her design in my opinion is without
flaw. Rather, I am talking about the fact that
she is registered with BBBonline and she has a
page that describes WHY her products are worth
purchasing. She has endorsements by Beauty
Industry Professionals and by customers. She
provides customer testimonials. She explains
how to determine if the cosmetics that you
are using are quality products.
This site is worth visiting even for those who
are not interested in cosmetics. It is a great
example of good quality professionalism.

Make a Postcard from your Home Page
by June Campbell
-------------------------------------
You know how difficult it is to drive traffic to
your site. The sheer numbers of websites make it
all too easy to get lost in the crowd. Search
engines are becoming less effective at keyword
searches, banner advertising has a lower click-
through rate than it once had .....
One solution to the traffic problem is offline
advertising. Big names like Beyond.com are already
promoting their site through commercial ads on
national television networks
Those of us without deep pockets might do well to
look for more affordable methods of offline adver-
tising -- such as postcards containing a picture of
your web site and a custom message. Let's call them
"Netposts."
Here are just some of the ways that you might use
Netposts.
* Mail them to clients in thanks for business.
Send them business contacts in lieu of Christmas
or other seasonal cards.
* Distribute them at networking groups and trade
shows.
* Leave them in selected locations instead of
brochures. For example, if your site is selling
pet care products, publish some articles on pet
care on your web site, then ask animal hospitals
and veterinarian clinics if they will display
your netposts.
* Send them out to potential customers before you
make that cold call. Since the cards are colour-
ful, attractive and easy to handle, they are more
likely to be kept on display than a letter or
even a brochure.
* Mail them to your customers to announce special
deals, sales or other corporate news.
You can make your own netposts if you have the
equipment, software and skill to use both
effectively.
You will need a graphics software program (i.e.
PaintShop Pro, PhotoShop), a desktop publishing
program (i.e. PageMaker, CorelDraw, MS Word), and
sheets of blank postcards such as those sold by Avery
(www.avery.com). You will also need access to a good
quality color printer. Desktop bubble jets can work
quite well when budgets are tight, but do not expect
the same quality printing as you would from an offset
printer.
Here is what you do:
1. Take a screen capture of your Web site. PC users,
press the Print Screen button on your keyboard. Mac
users, your instruction manual will tell you a key-
board command to use. [Editor's Note: See note
following this article for mac users] A screen
capture will save an image of your screen on the
clipboard if you are using Windows, and on the
desktop if you are using the Mac.
2. Open your graphics software application. Mac
users, open the image that appeared on your desktop
when you did the screen capture. PC users, open a new
file then paste your clipboard contents onto the new
file. (To paste, PC users use the keyboard command of
Control V). Voila! You now have a graphic image of
your home page. Edit and resize as desired.
3. Using a sheet of Avery postcards as your guide,
lay out a postcard page in your desktop publishing
program. Use your creativity to add text or other
images if wanted.
4. Design a back page for your postcards, including
your return address and any other message you require.
You can also add recipients' addresses.
5. Print your front page onto your Avery postcards,
using any good quality printer. Then, turn the postcards
over, being careful to match upsides; and print the back
page
There you have it. Your own do-it-yourself netposts!

-------------
Editor's Note: Are you a Macintosh User? I use Flash-It
to make screen captures. It is a shareware program and it
works great! You can choose the portion of the screen that
you would like to capture so that you do not have to resize
later. If you would like more information on how to obtain
a copy, send an email to me at mailto:danderso@...

There is a wealth of information at this web site!
The design of the web site is very clean, attractive,
and easy to navigate.
Jan has included many resourceful links including a
Warning Page to alert you to possible scams on the
internet. One of her desires is to help the newbies
on the internet to learn their way and she does this
very well by keeping her web site simple, yet resource-
ful.
She has a submit page directory for places to submit
your links and classifieds, an Office and Professional
Services section and even a section for those new to the
internet.
A Real Home Business Central! (Especially for those just
starting out!)

Welcome to Webmaster Tips Weekly
formerly Free Dollars Resource Weekly!
As you probably already know, we have changed our
name to Webmaster Tips Weekly. Anderson Creations
has acquired the newsletter and Free Dollars
(http://www.free-dollars.com) will have their own
newsletter. This allows Free Dollars to focus on
issues related specifically to their web site and
the resources found therein and Anderson Creations
to focus on providing subscribers with free
webmaster resources from around the internet.
As a result, look forward to a wider variety of
resources in upcoming issues of Webmaster Tips Weekly!
This change in name also means that we will be
changing the subscription management at egroups.com
from free-dollars-resource-weekly@egroups.com to
webmaster-tips-weekly@egroups.com. For the new
subscribers, don't worry, you are already "in." For
the current subscriber base, you will be receiving a
notice from egroups.com during the next week indicating
the change. You may disregard this email if you like.
Ok, now with that out of the way....
This issue deals almost entirely with Banner topics.
Instead of describing all the features, I'm going
to stop babbling and let you see for yourself :)
As always...
Submit your tips, articles, questions, etc. at
http://www.andersoncreations.com/ezines/wtw.html
Remember, this is Your Newsletter! Yours to learn

Happy Reading and may your banners be effective!

Getting the Best from Your Banners
by Brian Alt
-------------------------------------
That banner ads are the source of millions of dollars in
revenue each year is undeniable. A less clear question is
whether the "free" services provided by banner exchanges
can aid the smaller sized business that might not be able
to afford thousands of dollars worth of banner displays on
Yahoo every month. Are those banners you're displaying at
the top of your pages worth it, or are they drawing away
potential sales?
I recently had a conversation with a colleague about this.
He said, "Say my banner from my banner exchange draws in 5
surfers a day. But if I lose 10-20 folks who click on the
banners I have to display, that's not exactly a fair
trade." This seems clear, but before you run off and
remove all those banners from your pages, let's take a
closer look.
The question that my colleague raised seems to me to be a
question of audience. That is, just who are you trying to
attract to your site and why? Granted, if you just
maintain a personal home page, losing a few visitors to
the exchanges is no big deal. But most of us are trying to
make an income with a website, and every lost visitor is
perhaps a little less "bread on the table." The real
question becomes then not one of losing visitors, but of
losing customers.
One thing I've noticed about my site stats is that the
number of unique visitors to my main page and the number
of new subscribers to my newsletter are essentially the
same. I have the newsletter subscription form in a very
prominent place on the page, and hope that most of my
visitors will fork over their email addresses (if not
their cash). This means that even if I do lose them to
a banner (they have to eventually go somewhere, don't
they?), I know that I might be able to bring them back
to the site. And I wouldn't have had many of those
subscribers in the first place if not for the banner
exchange that I use.
This brings us back to the question of audience. Perhaps
the most important variable of all resides in what kind
of product or service you are selling. If you are
dealing with impulse products, it would probably be a
bad idea to show your visitor lots of snazzy banners that
could distract him and take him and his unstable money
elsewhere. But what if we're talking about non-impulse
items? Does anyone hire a web designer, or decide to go
with one web hosting company, without first checking out
the others? Perhaps, but I would imagine not often. If
you've got a potential customer who is "ready to buy,"
you can always decrease the chance of his leaving by
filtering out the banners of your direct competition
(and the good exchanges let you do this).
Thus, the main factor which you should use to determine
whether or not to use a banner exchange on your site's
pages is your audience. Are you targeting impulse buyers?
If so, then maybe now IS the time to run off and remove
those ads from your pages. If, on the other hand, you
are selling a product or service that encourages your
customers to shop around anyway, then showing a few
468x60 graphics at the top of your pages isn't going to
hurt. In fact, it can generate a significant amount of
extra traffic, which may in turn transform into extra
sales!
For detailed help in choosing a banner exchange, check
out a past issue of my newsletter by emailing
webmasters-digest@... with the following line
in the body of the message:
[x] Get file "Webmaster's Digest #003"
For now, let it suffice to ask the following questions
before you decide on a banner exchange:
1. Does my banner exchange allow me to target my
marketing? This is by far the most important question
you can ask. With the exact same banner on two different
exchanges, my CTR (click-thru ratio) was nearly ten times
higher due to the detailed targeting that the superior
program offered.
2. What is the display ratio? That is, how many banners
do I have to display on my pages to earn a display of my
banner elsewhere?
3. Do I have options of how to display the banners, or
must I always link back to the banner exchange's home
page, etc.?
4. Do I receive credit for people who join the program
through my links? Some exchanges pay you a few cents for
each new account, some give you commission on their
credits earned.
5. Are there any bonuses? Do I get free credits for
joining? Do I get a certain amount of freebies per day?
If you'd like my recommendation on an exchange that
fulfills all of the criteria above, visit:
http://www.infobot.net/
If you'd like to share your experiences with banner
exchanges (or anything else relating to website design
and promotion), I invite you to post a message at the
Design/Pro Forum, located at:
http://www.firstsolve.com/wwwboard/
Good luck! :-)

Feature Presentations Banner Exchange Program

Feature Presentations is definitely my personal
favorite banner exchange program. Not only are
they an exceptional banner exchange program, but
their customer service is timely and sincere.
This is very important and sometimes difficult
to find in the impersonal crevices of cyber-space.
They offer:
* targeted marketing
* 3/2 display ratio
* many options of configuration and specialization
(more than I have seen in other programs)
* up to 3 different banners
* ability to designate percentage of display for each banner
* configurable clickable regions on each banner
* many bonuses and incentives
* GREAT Customer Service
* much more!

3. Featured Tips
----------------------------------
I have been asked several times how we create
banners. Here is a very very quick overview:
1. Using an image manipulation program (i.e.
Photoshop, Corel 8, etc.) create the "frames"
that you would like to appear in your banner.
2. Using a gif program, compile these frames
into an animation by adding all these frames
into one file.
3. Optimize your banner with a program that
will reduce the colors to decrease the
bandwidth of the banner. I use the online
tool at http://www.gifoptimizer.com
4. For really dynamic results, consider using a cgi
script in your banner! For an example of what I am
talking about, go to our banner gallery at
http://www.andersoncreations.com/banners/bannerindex.html
and look at the interactive banner at the top of the page.
