RE: [webquest] Re: new member

Thanks for the welcome.  There are two other people with the same job within the project – one is a maths background, one English, so I may pass on those groups to them – share it around a bit.

Can I ask a basic question that will help with utilizing online resources and certainly with communicating with this group – I would like to clarify the ages for the various schools stages in the US. Whenever I think I have a handle on it I get confused again.

Here, kids start at kindergarten – maybe 3 yr kinder or 4 yr or both. Children generally start Primary School at 5. They start in Prep, then move through grade 1 -6. (so 7 years at primary). They then go to High School (generally at aprox 12 yrs) which has year 7 – 12. year 11 & 12 is called VCE here in Victoria, but its the high school certificate – some kids leave at the end of year 10 and get jobs or apprenticeships. After that there is university for a degree course (or alternatives like TAFE – technical & further education).

How does that translate to elementary, high school, college etc in the US?  I can never work out if college is high school, or uni?

Thanks in advance,

Suz

Welcome to the group, Suz.  I'm an elementary teacher during the day,
but, because I also sometimes work at my local Teacher's Center (a
training and resource center funded by New York State), I like to
exchange ideas and resources with educators who represent the full
span of grades. To this end, I joined this group several months ago.
It's been very quiet lately, but that just means it needs to have
people like you jump start it for it to preform well again.

If it helps your project, here's a couple other online groups you migh
want to check out that are geared for the secondary level:

Math4U, a very active group- it has almost 3,000 members.  It's meant
for 9th- graduate students, as well as for people who just enjoy Math.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Math4U (I'm one of the co-moderators.)

EngTeach-Talk, a moderately active group that's affiliated with the
NCTE (National Council of Teachers of English).
