Hi Robin,

We're using HTMLArea for our clients right now.

	 http://www.interactivetools.com/products/htmlarea/

The HTML that it produces is certainly not pretty (embedded font tags
and other nastiness), so we're in the process of investigating
htmlEditBox, which includes stylesheet integration and a better editing
interface.

I recently downloaded the demo for Contribute ($150) for the first time.
Installed, setup and edited a page in under 15 minutes. It is a no-brainer
than any client can quickly learn for simple text edits. It offers more
complex functions like added images, tables and hyperlinks. In my experience
one of the biggest struggles clients have is the idea of "ftp." It is built
into this app and works quietly in the background.

I use a Java-based applet that works on a Textarea in a form. It has a
lot of optional whistles and bells with look and feel of MS Word.
Compatible with Win and Mac clients. Product is called EditLive for
Java.

Here is the company web site: http://ephox.com/

Good to know.

Naturally. The thing is, I didn't elect to host with VERIO. No
placeholder for me to edit. Only choice was to point the DNS at some
air.

Thanks for the godaddy feedback.

I first started with ActivEdit http://www.cfdev.com/activedit/ and
liked it at first and then grew to dislike it. Pain to set up,
broken installer, terrible manual install instructions. Spell
checker is too precious about licensing. That said, I know there's a
version 4 out. But I've already moved over to SOEditor
http://www.siteobjects.com. It's a good one and provides better
image uploading and previewing tools than AE3 ever did.

There are a lot of free options out there too. And most of the
commercial in-browser editors have been written on the backs of the
free projects. So they're worth checking out.

One common theme is lousy or complete lack of support for XHTML
compliant code.

The most comprehensive list of in-browser WYSIWYG editors I have
found is:

TTW (Through the Web) WYSIWYG Editors
http://www.bris.ac.uk/is/projects/cms/ttw/ttw.html

It has a useful table of vital stats on each offering. Thorough.

Have a look at http://www.cayenneventures.com/, a domain I've had for a
while but haven't done anything with. By default, you can see that GoDaddy
puts up a "parked" message with ads for their other services, but this is
easily changed.

Easy to change even if you're not paying them to host it? Is there
a "don't show ads while my domain is parked" switch in the DNS
control panel?

Thanks for the feedback and the live example.

I think you can just set the name servers to nothing, though I've never
tried it.

By the way, I've registered domains at a few different companies, and
GoDaddy has been the best, hands down.

Gary,

The one that I use is called Hostgo.com. They are here in So Cal.
and they have a 700Meg site for 170 a year. Why specifically windows?
They are mainly a linux shop, but they do ASP, FrontPage, etc.
I have used them for about 3 years now. They have
a very QUICK reponse to a question, sometimes as quick as 4 hrs.
You can not talk to them via a phone, but they will answer any Email.
They are really good about giving assistance on most topics.

I had a client that I had been using them for hosting, and the client
flow the coop on me. So I sent them a message, and they refunded the
current renewal without question. So they are really customer service
based.

It just depends on what you are willing to pay. I prefer the budget hosting,
but if you want phone contact I'm sure it can be had - for a price.

BTW-I'm on my 3rd reseller package and found a great hosting company. No
phone, but my Sunday posts in the forum/help tickets are always answered
within an hour. (maybe 8 times now).

we still offer 24 hour PHONE tech support and we do dedicated servers at
$99/mo. i wouldn't consider that high.
but then again there are companies out there that offer 1000gb for $1/mo.
but if your site doesn't matter enough that when there's a problem that you
get immediate assistance, then that's something that you can live with.

I still can't get Eudora to work, and am tired of
waiting for the web-based Earthlink mail.

Does anyone have an alternative for reading mail on a
PC (but not on the Web)? Outlook is not a viable alternative.

I have a friend that wants a small, configurable Intranet site he can administer
himself.
He's experienced in ASP, SQL, etc. and wants to run something natively with his
Windows
server and tie into his existing Indexing Service easily. The ideas is to embed
that search
functionality into a CMS-driven intranet.

It doesn't have to be fancy, or feature-complete... mainly have the ability to
manage
several people making content changes in different pages. The site won't need to
be over
ten pages or so...

If he wanted to use PHP, I'd push him towards PHP-Nuke or the like, since I know
them. I
don't know anything about ASP, however, so... anyone savvy with ASP... have any
recommendations?

Oh yeah, it's a small company, so 'free' and 'sourceforge' are good. 'Pay' and
'sub-contract'
are bad.

Thanks. :-)

What's up D. Snow? How you been?

There's DotNetNuke:
http://www.google.com/search?q=DotNetNuke&sourceid=mozilla-
search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

and Rainbow Portal
http://www.rainbowportal.net/Rainbow/Default.aspx

and IBuySpy (Microsoft's Demo)
http://www.asp.net/IBS_Portal/DesktopDefault.aspx

I wouldn't consider any of these 'small' or 'efficient' or even
'particularly good', but they all are closely comparable to the Nuke
stuff.

Thunderbird 0.6 was released today. Purportedly with better spam
filtering.

Though I use Outlook. I've worked with Thunderbird and I really like
the iCalendar compatible XUL plugin you can use with
FireFox/Thunderbird.

For the price, how can you go wrong?

Perfect, as always. That should be enough to give my friend an idea of

Subject: 4096 color web-smart palette - more color links
foltzwerk
Send Email Send Email

For fear of showing my ignorance I searched the WebSanDiego archives
for mention of 4096 colors before posting this. I didn't find any
matches (granted the search function is still in Beta). So if I
missed it, well, here's my shame.

I used to be one of the 216 browser safe color koolaid drinkers.
Trust me; those 216 colors were darned important. I still mumble
browser safe color hexadecimal codes in my sleep. I stretched the
color limits by making custom browser safe checkerboards with the
best of them. But sometime around early 2002 I stopped caring. All
around the web you could see browser safe color caution had been
thrown to the wind. There was something new to wring our hands over,
CSS, XHTML, the DOM, standards. So my curiosity was piqued this
evening when, while installing a free version upgrade to ColorImpact
2.6 I read in the change log that the author added support for the
4096 color web-smart palette. Huh? Well, it's real, and here are
some interesting links and new color pickers.

Basically, instead of building colors with our old buddies 00, 33,
66, 99, CC, and FF. This time 11, 22, 44, 55, 77, 88, AA, BB, DD,
and EE have been invited to the party. Giving us a nice big 16 x 16
x 16 color cube.

Supposedly these colors are "safe" across all monitors capable of
displaying more than thousands of colors. If that don't beat all
they're even supposed to dither nicely to the original 216 on
monitors only capable of 216 colors.

Without further waiting around or whatever, here are the links.

4096 Color Wheel Version 2.1
http://www.ficml.org/jemimap/style/color/wheel.html

MoreCrayons (colors for web designers)
http://www.morecrayons.com/palettes/webSmart/

Last but not least, a link to TigerColor http://www.tigercolor.com/
because I owe the discovery to their changelog.

Now will this discovery change the way I currently work with color?

If you've been in downtown San Diego you've seen them, three wheeled
bicycles with passengers, they're called Pedicabs. There are about 200
licensed riders in San Diego, we're people who've been, out sourced,
layed off, we're too old, too young, in school or unschooled. For
whatever reason we're not viable to the Bush economy, but we've found
something we can do to stay afloat in this economy, give people rides on
our bike taxis.

Recently the San Diego City Council has decided that we're not an asset
to San Diego and has voted to restrict our access to Petco Park during
ballgames and other special events. We are small, quiet, safe and
non-polluting, yet we do not have the same rights as any and every other
vehicle. Private vehicles, cabs, buses, and electric "minicabs" can use
streets around the new ballpark that pedicabs are restricted from using.

This is wrong, go to http://www.PetitionOnline.com/pedicab/petition.html
and urge the San Diego City Council to reverse their unfair and
livelihood wrecking decision.

Pass this around! Tell your friends!

Thanks
Jim Carter

I certainly will. I used to pedicab in Balboa park in 1989-90. I
think that most of the gaslamp area should be closed to automobile
traffic except for delivery trucks during delivery hours. The city
council probably just wants to shut down the current pedicab company
so the ball team owners can open their own "pedal-cab" service.
Those poor ball team owners really deserve a break.
