For November, we're going to tap into the expertise of everyone
including several past and future speaker to rip a site apart and
find out why its not doing what it is supposed to do and try to
figure out what can be done to make it better. Both Jeremy Straub and
Mariamne Ingalls have said they will join us, several other experts
are also probables besides the general keen expertise of the group as
a whole.
We will be taking my own site, http://www.cohenkiraly.com, as the
real world example. It is a site which I think has decent content but
which is not getting the traffic it should. And when people get
there, the statistics indicate they are not finding what they want.
The several interactive parts of the site, the guestbook, the
science/creationism forum and the book review sections get very
little input from visitors.
I think taking apart a real-world example will be a very instructive
experiment and it should prove interesting to see where our experts
and members agree and where they do not.
Feel free to go to the site and pick it apart. I have a very tough
skin and am very aware that much on this site doesn't work as it is
supposed to so don't hold back. Within a day or two, I should have a
link in the Web SIG section (http://www.cohenkiraly.com/websig.htm)
which will show this site's statistics for the last year as tabulated
by Web Funnel and I should also be able soon to include a page
indicating what registration I have done over the last several months
to help people analyze what may be going on.
As usual, the meeting will be at Barudan America at 10:30 a.m. A map
and driving directions can be found at
http://www.cohenkiraly.com/websig.htm.
RSVP requested but not required. The meeting is free and everyone is
welcome and bring friends if you can. Bagels and coffee will be
available. Look forward to seeing you there.
There will be no meeting in December. Am open to ideas for January
topics.
Now that we've gotten bigger, I wanted to see if anyone can help Lee
Battdorf and another car-less person for Cleveland Heights get to our
meetings.
Quite a while ago, Lee asked if anyone would be able to give him and
another person a ride to the WEB SIG meetings from the Heights area.
He said they would be happy to contribute to gas money.
If anyone is interested, contact Lee at bat@...

CDPUG Meeting
Thursday, November 29, 2001
Reception 6:00 pm
Meeting 6:30 pm
Topic: " Flash: In the Pan!"
Where: Envision Imaging
1608 East 23rd Street
Cleveland, OH 44114
Flash: In the Pan! Nov. 29, 2001
Flash... good or bad, it's everywhere. Many people claim to know
Flash,
but fewer really know how to harness the power of some of Flash's
hidden
features. Multimedia designer, Kenn Louis will demonstrate some of
these
features as well as how to manage the workflow of jobs created in
Flash.
Geared toward the intermediate user that wants to beef up his or her
skills, this presentation will touch on some of the Flash basics as
well
as introduce users to the powerful Actionscript language. While
learning
Actionscript is a job in itself, Kenn will show us helpful online
resources where users can "steal" code to customize for their own use
as
well as find helpful tutorials where users can teach themselves what
they
need to know.
An artist and freelance multi-media designer, Kenn's Flash credits
include developing interactive greetings products for
AmericanGreetings.com, interface designs, marketing pieces and Web-
based
training materials. RabbleRouser.com is his online gallery, home to
irreverant animation, multi-media, and short films. Kenn's animated
cartoons have appeared on entertainment portals such as HotWired's
Animation Express and Shockwave.com.
Parking is in front of the building. Overflow parking is across the
street. For directions, call Envision at 216-566-7893.

Just a late reminder of Nov. 17 meeting where you get to tear my work
to shreds... (And I get to pick the brains of lots of smart people
for free!) :-{)

Our tentative January speaker will be doing our March program. (Delay
in confirming details entirely my fault.) Does anybody want to do a
program for January? Suggestions welcome or we could simply cancel.
Next two meetings ought to be great. Local composer and web designer
Byron Nemeth will be presenting our February talk on the ins and outs
of using music and audio on the web.
In March, attorney Louis J. Licata, Esq. will be giving us a primer
in Internet law, many thanks to Stuart Smith for finding this speaker
for us.
More details to come on both meetings.
If anyone wants the January spot, let me know soon at
wkiraly@....
Thanks,
Bill
I'm in the midst of relocating so wouldn't mind if we just cancel January.

There will not be a January Web SIG meeting this month due to the
fact so many people are really busy (including myself) and can't make
it this month. Jeremy Straub did offer to present but both his
offered topics were such high-quality that I didn't want to use them
for a fill-in, short-notice meeting.
However both February and March are confirmed. February will be using
music and audio successfully on the web, March will be a primer on
the legal side of the Internet. Details to come.

Two sites discussed at length at recent SIG meetings have been
updated and gone live with new designs.
<b>Janet Dodrill</b>, Director of Web Services for the CIA has
released the new version of the Cleveland Institute of Art web site.
Janet writes:
Check Out Our New Web Site Today!
<a href="http://www.cia.edu">http://www.cia.edu</a>
The New CIA Web Site Brings New Features and Information
- Faculty Pages (Department Chairs, Heads, Major Chairs)
- Testimonials from CIA Graduates
- Updated Student Art
- Resource Links
- Highlighted Visiting Artists
- Faculty/Staff Directory
- iPostcards
- Site Search Engine
Check back often for even more items and add-ons.
Also, my own Publishing Heretic site at <a
href="http://www.cohenkiraly.com">www.cohenkiraly.com<a> has been
updated using much of the feedback from the November meeting where it
was offered as a redesign sacrifice.
Don't forget, the February meeting will be on music on the web and
the March meeting will be on Internet Law. Details to come.
Got some really interesting meetings coming up.
In Februry, Byron Nemoth of Pacifica Studios will be discussing
Audio & Music/Multimedia And It's Future On The Internet
He will talk about audio & msic delivery on the net in various formats
and more importantly, the encoding and mastering of sounds for web
site content delivery.
This talk will be at Barudan America on Feb. 19 at 10:30 a.m. For
people really interested in the nuts and bolts of the subject, Byron
has also offered to host a smaller meeting at his studio which will
be arranged at Saturday's meeting.
Also possible topics for the 19th and for the later meeting are:
2. Recording full blown sessions on the Internet
between various recording studios in different
cities-different countries at the exact same time
with different musicians in each and every studio.
3. Exotic Surround mixing for film soundtracks
and very high end web sites with Hi-Speed connections,
dealing with the issues of support for:
mono, stereo, quad, LCRS, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 and 10.2 surround formats.
Bagels and coffee will be available. RSVPs appreciated by not
required. All our meetings are free and open to the public.
Membership in CDPUG and/or GCPCUG are encouraged but not a
requirement.
Tell your friends, this ought to be a really interesting meeting.
ARTIST BIO:
100 Worlds will be the dynamic follow up to last year's critically
acclaimed 2000 CD and Power To Destroy single, with the millennium
release of the debut solo CD Byron established his reputation as a
world class guitar player and accomplished producer/engineer.
From playing in a number of unique instrumental bands, to performing
with the Cleveland Chamber Orchestra's '97 Oct./Nov. season in the
Cleveland Ballet's rock opera OZONE HOUR at the State Theater, to
producing a wide variety of musical groups and corporate projects
at Pacifica Studios, Byron's music and engineering talents are
brought forth to create new sounds.
Born In Quito, Ecuador (South America) Byron is the
product of two loving parents Maria and Paul Nemeth.

Directions and a map to Barudan can be found at:

Also, in March, Cleveland Attorney Louis Licatta will give us an
introduction to Internet Law that anyone producing internet content
should know.
For April, Tentatively scheduled topic is search engine optimization.
Details to come.
Anyone have the time and inclination to be the WEB SIG's webmaster? I
think what I've created is kind of pitiful for a Web SIG, particulary
with all the talent we've got in this group.
I would want a new site primarly designed in HTML or other searchable
form, not all flash. Needs to link to our two parent groups and can
be made into a great resource along with our yahoo group space.
Ideally, the job would involve a couple hours of work each month to
put up a synopsis and resources from the previous meeting and put up
information for scheduled meetings as necessary. I know we could get
volunteers to help with content as necessary.
Just as a poll, not as a request for money yet, how would you members
feel about donating $5 (or less) a year to have our own domain and
site? To create websig.cohenkiraly.com would cost about $50 per year,
to have www.websigcleveland.org or something like it would be $130
per year but we could then have 50 or 100 Mb, streaming media,
several DSNs, mailboxes not attached to anyone's personal site and
more.
The February Web SIG Meeting is the 16th, not the 19th.
--It helps to change the month on the callendar every once in a
while :-/

Bill,
I might be able to save you some money. On the domain name, GODADDY
regsiters for $8.95 per yr instead of $30.
Also, I have reseller status at my host service, so I can get 20% off
hosting prices.
I also might be willing to help w/site. Depends on how busy I stay (have
two projects going right now).
I plan on attending the next web sig, so we can talk then, or call me
any evening if you are so inclined. 440-953-9914.

Louis J. Licata of Licata & Associates Co., L. P. A. will be giving
us an introduction to Internet Law for Webmasters at our Sat., March
16 Web SIG meeting.
Mr. Licata specializes in Internet Law and will be discussing many of
the main things that Webmasters need to be aware of to protect
themselves, their clients and their work. Among topics he and an
associate will touch on will be: intellectual property laws and
copyright issues, domain name and site ownership, privacy and spam
issues.
I understand that he is a very interesting and informative speaker.
Check www.cohenkiraly.com/websig.htm on or after Wednesday for a more
complete bio. For anyone who needs it, you will also find driving
instructions and map to the meeting place.
The meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. at our usual haunts in Barudan
America. Coffee and Bagels will be served. As usual, the meeting is
free and everyone is welcome. RSVPs would be appreciated but not
required (RSVP to wkiraly@..., not as a reply to this
mail).
Please feel free to forward this message on to anyone who might be
interested. If anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me by
the above email or call me at 440-546-9440 x236 day, 440-349-1148 eve.
In April, Several times past and always excellent speaker Jeremy
Straub will present an update and primer on make your sites more
visible to search engines. More details to come.
Two more great meetings coming up, you don't want to miss either.
APRIL 20: OPTIMIZING YOUR PAGES FOR SEARCH ENGINES
In April, we are lucky to have Jeremy Straub returning with another
great topic: Optimizing Your Pages for Search Engines. Jeremy will
share his knowledge of how to get the best visibility for your sites,
optimize your rankings and get the most hits your site can. This is a
topic that is changing rapidly, almost daily, so every bit of
information you can get is helpful. Jeremy has presented to us
several times before and has always been interesting and inciteful.
Jeremy is a developer with Mapopolis.
This meeting will be Saturday, April 30 at 10:30 a.m. at Barudan
America. Go to www.websigcleveland.org for a map and driving
directions. Like all of our meetings, this meeting is free and open
to all. RSVP is desired but not necessary. We'll have bagels and
coffee.
MAY 11: CASCADING STYLE SHEETS
In May, NOT ON THE THIRD SATURDAY, BUT ON SATURDAY 5/11/02, Eric A.
Meyer, W3C member, HTML writer's guild teacher and author of the
O'Reilly book "Cascading Style Sheets: The Definitive Guide" and
of "CSS 2.0 Programmer's Reference" will give us the lowdown on
practical CSS and where this vital part of web page technology is
going. Cascading Style Sheets are the easiest and best ways to
enforce styles across all pages of a site while still allowing easy
editing. They allow designers to do much more than plain HTML
commands allow. To get a feel for just how powerful CSS can be, visit
Eric's site at http://www.meyerweb.com/ and particularly take a look
at css/Edge from his menu. This meeting will also be at Barudan
America at 10:30 a.m.
I take it this meeting is actually April 27. Man, I bet it will be crowded.

I assume this is a typo and you meant April 20th.
In last message, I gave two dates for the April meeting (clumsy
typing, idiot proofreader (myself))
This meeting will be on our normal date and time, April 20, third
(next) Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Come early for your bagels, this one is
likely to be crowded.

This meeting will be Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Barudan
My 31 year old son is getting married (for the first time) or I'd be there.
Sounds like a good presentation. I am working on putting a search
engine on a site using PHP and MySQL.

Hello, Bill --
I'll be looking forward to coming to the WebSIG meeting tomorrow, April
20 -- and I have one interested friend who wants to come along. We'll
see you there, and thank you.
Regards, John Pickett
