West End Place is a mixed use, mixed income residential complex located in Boston's historic West End. West End Place is a ten story building consisting of 183 mixed income residential apartments, 2 commercial spaces, a museum (dedicated to preserving the history of the West End), and an underground 101-car parking garage for use by residents and commercial space operators. West End Place was built in 1997. The 183 apartments consist of 60 one-bedroom, 107 two-bedroom, and 16 three-bedroom floor plans that range in size from 600 square feet to 1700 square feet.
Of the 183 residential apartments, 101 are considered "market rate," and the other 82 are considered low and moderate income.
One of the most frequently asked questions is, "Why is West End Place a condominium? I thought it was a cooperative."
In point-of-fact, it is both. The condominium format as provided for in Massachusetts General Law 183A permit several different types of entities (i.e. cooperatives, commercial spaces, etc.) to reside under one single entity (the condominium). As such, the condominium pays the common expenses, bears the brunt of liability and serves as a platform for governance. Fees, powers and responsibilities are "rolled-up" from other entities to the condominium.
