I found Doc G's list a great combination of the old stand-by objects as well as some very nice, more obscure objects. I've been adding more to it here and there as I see cool images on the different groups, so hopefully the list will grow into something of it's own!
I knew I had a good clear night tonite, so I used whatsup seriously and based on that I chose NGC2403 which is not something I would have thought of without the program.

I actually had that originally, but I removed it to save space.
The main reason I stuck with 800x600 is that I have a Sony Palmtop
computer (U50) that I have as my scope and camera control. I usually
control it through 802.11G from indoors using VNC. It's limited to
800x600. Normally I don't do planning with it, but one thing I want
to do in a future release is to integrate with ASCOM and allow GOTO's
directly from Whatsup.
Regardless, I can hopefully make things customizable enough now that
those running widescreed can take advantage of their real estate,
while those with tiny resolution can still function.
I'm not at all looking to do planetarium functionality, since that's
been done fairly well already. I'm trying to fill in the gaping
holes for planning an imaging session, or for that matter an
observing session.

Hmmmm...do you have mountain time selected on your computer clock?
That's where it gets it from.
Based on previous feedback, I'm going to add the GMT dev to the city
list and/or allow it to be used entered and saved as a default. Doing
it automatically from the clock seemed like a good idea, but it seems
to have too many pitfalls (including planning a astro trip).

Rick,
You might want to consider displaying both N/S/E/W an the degrees
together, e.g. N-0, S-180, etc. to avoid any confusion.

Yes, 0 degrees is north.
I oriented the pie like most planetarium programs look if you zoom out,
with West on the right. Like you said, it's as if you're looking up.

Rick,
Thats exactly what I was looking for. West of the meridian and the SW
corner. I'll play around with the program some more tonight. Let you
know if I have any other questions.

Welcome, Keith!
The pie chart should help with this...
If you set 90-360 (inclusive) you will get everything West of the
meridian and everything in the SE quadrant as well. The pie in
Whatsup has North on top, and W on the right, since this is "looking
up" oriented (like a planetarium program).
If you want to only get objects to the West, you can either set 180-
360(inclusive) for min and max of az, or set 0-180 (exclusive). The
pie should look identical.
The examples in the field description web page may help as well...

Hi everyone, I just downloaded Whats up last night. What a cool little
program! It should help me out a lot with my imaging sessions. I just
want to make sure I have my AZ inclusive range set right. I have a
light dome to the East, so I want to exclude this portion of the sky. I
set my range 90 min 360 max. Does this sound right?

Rick,
I think you are limiting yourself too much at 800x600. I would standardize on
1024x768. That will give you a lot more space to work with and I doubt too many
people out there would buy your software and operate at 800x600.

I'm struggling with how to keep the momentum going. Word of mouth and
objective reviews will probably do worlds more to get people to try it
than anything I can say.
So please feel free to tell your astro-buddies or even post a mini-
review on areas you frequent. I'd appreciate it!

Rick
I can definitely see that...
This may lead me down the larger road of allowing customization of
column content. I like ther current compact format, and want to keep
it usable at 800x600.
There's also a bug where selecting nebula selects planetary nebula as
well...I know I had fixed that one sometime in the past, but
somewhere it got lost...

OK, guys...Would you rather see time until meridian transit, or local
transit time.
My leaning would be Doug's suggestion of time until transit. If I
put local transit time, I would always end up doing the math to
answer the question "how long until a flip is needed".
Plus it was easier :) I already have it implemented...

I agree with the suggestions Serge made in an earlier post. Here is my
wish list (some communicated in early emails, but I thought I would
post them here for others to comment):
1) Add column for meridian transit time
2) Add GMT deviation to location selection database
3) Some sort of indicator as to when the moon will be in out. I know
this is a more difficult feature to add, so maybe this would be an idea
for version 2.
This is a nice tool already, Rick. Keep up the good work, and best of
luck.

Kurt,
Yes, 0 degrees is north.
I oriented the pie like most planetarium programs look if you zoom out,
with West on the right. Like you said, it's as if you're looking up.

All great suggestions, Serge. Some I've thought about, some not.
I'm going to let things settle for a week or 2 before I dive back
into feature addition mode. I want to concentrate on stability and
bug fixes before I deviate too much from the release.
But during this time, it would be great to solidify what the users
are looking for, and feedback like yours is especially what I value.
Thanks!

Hi Rick,
That's definitely a piece of software that is needed. Here are the
suggestions I gave you off-line and a few more (in different order):
1/ Add column giving the number of hours and minutes before meridian
flip for each object
2/ Add column showing transit time
3/ Add column where one can paste in the URL address of our favourite
image of the object (text, not thumbnail)
4/ User-defined column selection
5/ Manual data entry mode (in addition to the batch entry that you
already have)
6/ Option for catalog(s) to be used (Messier, NGC, IC, Sh, etc.)
Cheers,
Serge
Hey all,
Welcom to the WhatsUp group. I'm excited about this program...I've
been working on it on and off for about 2 years, although most of the
activity has been in the last month or 2 with all of the clouds here in
Michigan...
I'd like to keep this Board active and a means of making WhatsUp a
better product. I will encourage you to upload new object files to the
files section to share with others so everyone can use them and tweak
them to their liking.
Anyway, welcome again and I hope you like WhatsUp!
