Subject: Bulk import simple hierarchy of folders & text files?
bendj095124367913213465@...
Send Email Send Email

Hi,

I'm migrating from OSX to Linux. On OSX, I used DevonThink as a
'personal database'. It exports all its data nicely as a hierarchy of
folders containing plain-text data files.

My goal is to get that data into a capable/similar app on Linux.

I've looked at Tomboy (Gnome), Basket (KDE) & Zim (Gtk) apps -- all
have their issues, and, afaict, NONE can batch import a simple folder/
file hierarchy.

I just 'stumbled' on WikidPad. From an overall functionality
standpoint, it looks like exactly what I was looking for!

Which leaves only the import question for me ...

CAN wikidpad (I've installed trunk/r205 to explore ... ) import a
simple hierarchy of folders containing text files, where each folder
contains only text files, and each text file maps to a single record?
I *have* found multipage (.mpt) import, but that's quite what I'm
looking for ...

Thanks,

BenDJ

With WikidPad 2.0 you can write <<C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Startup>> anywhere in text.

Starting << and ending >> must be in the same paragraph (no manual
newline between).

Use "/" slash instead. Windows understands it.

Or drag-n-drop file to WikidPad, and you will have path in this format:
file:///D|/tmp/DWNLD/mcard-2009-07-17.htm

Is there an easy way to put something like file path in wikidPad
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup

without having to add double slashes like this so it displays correctly with
with HTML output.

C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Office\\Office\\Startup

This gets even more confusing with things like UNC paths where there are double
slashes used in the first place.

I don't like having to double slash things as when I am working in edit mode it
shows to funny and is hard to copy and paste in other places.

thanks for the great program!

I don't think that externally modified files are supported
by Wikidpad itself.
And so I won't try to do that via extension.

I want to use RasterizerBridge.py (wikidpad.python-hosting.com/wiki/Rasterizer), but am having some trouble. The plugin wants the image file in YourWikiFolder\data\, but I keep my files in a different directory (YourWikiFolder\user_files\) to keep them separate. Can someone change the plugin to allow a different directory?

I guess, based on my needs I prefer that the Todo page is updated without
interference. For example I am in a wiki page, I add a todo:xxxx and I leave
Wikidpad and go work on something else(Word, Browser etc). Then the todo page
would be updated(created, written) automatically in the background since there
has been a new todo: addition. Finally my desktop software picks up the updated
todo.txt(or todo.wiki) and publishes it on my computer`s desktop periodically. I
use Conky for Ubuntu for this purpose.(There are plenty of similar software for
Windows as well) Since that my todos are published on my Desktop, I would not
need to worry about clicking, finding the Todo page within WP. That would be my
usage scenario.

One other scenario is when the files has been edited outside of Wikidpad. I
personally use Vim to edit text files so using Vim to edit
Wikidpad files is not out of the sight. It is just easier to browse the folder
and edit the file. Recently I have been experimenting with Using Zim+Wikidpad
together, kind of like sharing the same folder-file pool. It might work in the
long run, at elast for me. Both apps have strong points. Anyways what I am
trying to say is that it is possible that the files could be changed without
using Wikidpad :)

cheers

_Relaxation_ ;-)

And some thoughts about the topic:

Earlier you wrote:

> The reason I am asking is that I have embedded the
> resulting text file into my desktop but the text file
> is not updated if I let Wikidpad open in the bakcground, ...

What event do you want to update the todo page?
I'm a bit puzzled about your "in the background".
While WikidPad is in the background nothing would change on
any page and so the todo page won't change too.

Two desirable "auto updates" I can imagine just now are:

1.) The todo page is opened in Wikidpad, but not yet visible.
If now another page is edited by the user (affecting any todo)
and then the todo page gets the focus again (the user switches
to it) it should be automatically updated.
2.) The same as above, but the update should occur periodically,
regardless of the current visibility (not existence!)
of the todo page.

I assume you had #2 in mind?
Or, hmmm, o.k., the current date/time changes while Wikidpad
is in the background... Is it that what you meant?

Or do you know more situations for a desirable auto update?

Another thing to consider:
What should happen if the user is editing the todo page
itself (above the placemark)?
An auto update really might interfere here.

That was just to figure out if you have had a timeline regarding implementing
any new features or similar features to the one I have mentioned. For sure there
should not be any deadline. And noone is asking , demanding or forcing you to
work on it soon or later.

Auto update is much more complicated under the hood

It's already on your (and my own) wishlist.
So perhaps sometime it will be there. Or not.

Hi

What is your deadline for such additions? I do nto want to rush you or bgu you
about it, but I was hoping that this tool would do it for me. I just realize
that without auto update this wont cut it for me. But in any case it is a greta
addition for Wikidpad. If one uses Wikidpad for everything it works great.

There is no automatic update yet.

I'll try to find a solution for this, but I'm not sure
if it is possible to set timers from within a plugin.

Also I would like to have a means to update the ToDo page
when it gets the focus and not only if it is openend.
That requires a not yet existing hook (or so) within Wikidpad.
Perhaps Michael will implement such a thing in a future version?

Hi

What is the update intervals of the Todo plugin page? Is it only updated when I
open the page? The reason I am asking is that I have embedded the resulting text
file into my desktop but the text file is not updated if I let Wikidpad open in
the bakcground, I need to click on another paeg and get back to the todo page to
get it updated so that it is also updated on my desktop which is little counter
intuitive.

This problem hasn't caused me to lose any data as far as I can tell, but it
certainly has gotten me into some sticky situations during meetings.

If this is the problem (I assume it is) you can do the following to test
it (and use it as a workaround until I have a fix):

After you opened the invisible dialog and WikidPad doesn't react, press
ALT+SPACE.
Now a little menu should appear with "Move" and "Close" items (exact
names may differ).
Press RETURN to select "Move" and press one of the cursor keys
(shouldn't matter which).
If you move your mouse now you should see the dialog "sticked" to the mouse.
Place it where you want and left click the mouse to release it.

Is there a "WikidPad_Error.log" file created in the configuration
directory (which can be found by using "Help"->"About" in the menu and
scrolling the info text down to the end)? If so, what is its content (at
least the last few 100 lines)?

I've been using WikidPad for over a year and have found it to be quite useful -
thanks :)

Recently I moved from wikidPad 1.9 to WikidPad 2.0beta09_1 and have had a couple
of incidents where the program becomes unresponsive and has to be killed by Task
Manager.

I am running the Windows version on Windows XP SP2 on a laptop which is used on
a docking station with two monitors most of the time but which I often undock to
go to a meeting.

Once I have undocked, if I run a command like Options or Export which brings up
a modal dialog box WikidPad becomes unresponsive. My theory is that the dialog
box is being displayed on the (now nonexistent) second monitor, but since there
is now no way to interact with the dialog there is nothing that you can do to
get it out of this mode except to kill the process.

If this is the case, then the fix would be to add code to see if the dialog is
going to be displayed within the current desktop and if not, to initialize the
dialog coordinates to a known good value.

Please let me know if you think this is a plausible explanation for the problem

Hi!

I just started using Wikidpad (1.8 final) for keeping daily notes and some lists
(such as books I have read and movies I have seen).
I'm thinking about also using it for cooking recipes and keeping data on people
I know (like adresses, birthdays, etc). I'm looking for examples from people who
are doing the same. I'm interested in seeing templates, usage of tags and the
structure of the tree.
I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way of using wikidpad in terms
of time it takes to write new entries and how difficult it is to find back
specific information later on.

So far all this information has been laying scattered on my HD in different
files and formats. Wikidpad seems like a great tool to put it all under one
roof!

only when in edit mode, when you click on the [WikiPageEx!here |Here] link, the
cursor doesn't jump to anchor:here. But preview mode works fine.

[WikidPad]
[WikiPageEx!here |Here]
[WikiPageEx!here1 |Here]

anchor:here
+++ Here

anchor:here1
+++ Here1
