Thanks for the reply. I am still comparing the two
variations of lenses but it looks like i will be going
with the sigma.

I have not used the Sigma 170-500mm, but have used the Sigma 50-500mm f4.0-6.3 for both birds and for wildlife. I have had great results in daylight, however...
