his is a comparison on four machines I've repaved for myself and
family. I had the time to muck about and repave them each twice to be
sure it was better to push them to Win7 (where I can more easily
support them due to less vulnerabilities, etc.) versus just starting
over on XP. In each case, the Win7 Home Pro install was more
responsive than the XP Home/Pro license (I reinstalled the original OS
that the machine shipped with and patched-up).
While part of the difference is no doubt due to less patch-thrash, I
also believe that they shrunk kernel-level stuff so much in Win7 RC
that more stays in line-cache... so it is faster. Two were laptops
(both AMD) and two desktops (one Intel, one AMD). Memory ranged from
384K to 4GB. Processors ranged from an Intel 1GHz PIII (yes, really)
to an AMD Turion X2 TL-56.
