thanks for the help paul. i will try the things you suggest and then post
the outcome in case it is of any help to anyone else.

actually i have another problem which someone may have experienced

. my email out is now not working. the IP address of my ISP POP3 mailbox has
become corrupt. my ISP - Claranet (one of the U.K's largest) says this
problem was caused by norton antivius which they say is well known for doing
that. i do not know if they are bullshitting me or whether norton AV does
that to the IP address (actually setting it to the IP address of my own
machine)
