AVG indicates that shell32.dll has changed, I tried to find CabFile41 on my
install CD, no luck. Where else might this file be located ? Is the change in
shell32.dll affecting my online stability I'm on dial up and it is pretty bad
anyway.

Hello ~

When I set files or folders to archive and read only, it seems I am
still able to delete (remove to the recycle bin) those files and
folders. Anyway to overcome this and protect files and folders I don't
want deleted?

thanks

Hi

I still do loads with my Win98 machine and also my Win95 machine.
The SCSI scanner on the Win95 still is the best I have ever found
and the SCSI is wonderfully quick. The Win98 and Win95 machine
are used together to process images and put them onto CD.

When I have been on this XP machine a while I forget just how smooth
and easy it is to use the Win98 machine. No lumbering permission
issues... Do a 'find files folders' on the Win98 machine and it flashes
through in seconds... On here I may as well go and watch a film
for a couple of hours while I wait. Same goes for setting permissions.

I just had to give up again with the network on the XP machine cus
for some reason it wasn`t happy with the permissions to scan across
the network. As I say I just gave up and burnt what I needed to CD
on the Win98 machine.

The other thing I love is the speed at which the Win98 machine
boots up... seconds.

I also have an Amiga on Broadband here linkled to my Win98 and
Win95 machine. They work without problem together. I know when
I put the XP machine on the network though cus the Amiga goes through
a cycle of trying to handshake and the SCSI drive keeps flicking round. You
almost sense the XP machine struggling to come to terms with just
who and what it is trying to handshake with...

I am dreading the day I have to use anything more modern than XP.

PS: Win98 Paint retains image size and politely asks you if you want to
enlarge to a pasted image.... Not XP Paint. Its a pain when you are
trying to create same size images. I know that there is a work around
in XP but why did they change to an inferior method... I say that cus
there are numerous changes from Win98 that really makes me wonder.

Hi.

Have encountered a bit of a problem.

Someone accidently sent me several large photo files by e-mail. This machine
uses slow dial-up and they are going to take ages to download. I want to kill
off these e-mails. I cannot stop them being downloaded from my ISP.

Years ago I used a free spam-killer that allowed you to look at the
headers/sources of all incoming messages. You could then instruct your computer
to proceed to download or to kill any individual e-mail. I want to use that
approach to solve my problem but I cannot remember what the free software was
called !

QUESTION 1. Can anyone recommend free download spam-killer that will do this job
?

QUESTION 2. Is there any other solution that I may have missed ?

Thank you.

Regards,

Greg.

Hi.

I have been using AVG free version for virus protection. They stopped supporting
W98 recently (like a lot of other people have done too !!).

Can anyone recommend any other free antivirus for W98.

I did consider AVAST but I am not too keen on it.

Thanks.

Greg.

I'd like to briefly touch upon what I mean by noisy software developers.
On my Mac, for example, where I am running 6.4.1, I tunes pops up a
window asking if I would like to upgrade to Itunes 8. If I made that
tragic mistake, and then went ahead and upgraded my operating system, it
would render thousands of dollars worth of protools gear useless, and
force me to buy all kinds of other software upgrades. It would create an
extraordinary mess which would take days to fix and rebuild.

Software companies are arrogant and disrespectful in their push for more
upgrades and more money, which keeps end users in constant turmoil. But
they disguise it behind a marketing campaign for "more features and more
benefits". But then, you already knew all this.

If the group is "neglected" it is simply a testimonial to the stability

I would like to prevent downloads on a Windows 98 SE machine.

We will have out of town teenage guests who will be using my backup
(Windows 98 SE) machine to check their e-mail etc and use the web.

I would like to prevent the downloading of files on that machine.

How can I do that without stopping them from using the web?

Thanx

Evidently I was mistaken about when AVG would do it's last update. Today they
informed me that they no longer supported Windows98
For now I'm going to look into www.avast.com. I hope they haven't abandoned us
too. If anyone has a better idea please tell us about it.

I use dialup Win98SE, after dialing in if I login to Yahoo messenger,, logout
after conversation then close YM if I start IE and attemp to access a site say
the bank the line drops; relogging in it drops again. Going the other way
Browser first, close file close browser login to Yahoo Messenger if I get into
a conversation the icoon for the line indicates constant download and system
locks completely. Only solution I found so far that works a bit is a power off
during lockout cant shut down. Any solution preferably a simple one would be
appreciated.

Q: How can I tell if my computer has been hit by Conficker? How would I remove
it?

...The Internet Storm Center, a project of the Bethesda-based SANS Institute,
maintains a list of links to Conficker-removal tools from numerous
security-software developers (http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid =5860).
Since Conficker can stop you from getting to that page and those links, you may
need to borrow an uninfected machine to download a removal tool. Some vendors
also have set up alternate Web addresses that Conficker doesn't know about; for
instance, try http://fsecure.com or http://bdtools.net for free Conficker fixes
from F-Secure and BitDefender...

A Little Economic Stimulus: Free Antivirus By Rob Pegoraro
Thursday, February 12, 2009; D02
Using Windows has traditionally required paying a tax of sorts. Not to
Microsoft but to the vendor of the antivirus program you install to
protect your PC.

This tax has come not just in the form of purchase prices and annual
subscription fees but also in the time needed to maintain increasingly
complicated security tools.

But you don't have to pay all those bills: A few antivirus programs
are free for home, non-commercial use. And thanks to their relative
simplicity, they also demand less care and feeding than the security
suites sold by McAfee, Symantec and others.

Consider this option an economic stimulus package you can implement by
uninstalling one program and loading another -- subject to some
issues. With few exceptions, these programs screen only for viruses,
not other threats (although both Windows XP and Vista already include
firewall software, the most important line of defense). Two of the
three leading contenders run only on Windows 2000, XP and Vista. They
also provide minimal or no tech support.

You may, however, have trouble distinguishing among the three. Even
their names sound alike.

Avast Antivirus Home Edition, AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition and Avira
AntiVir Personal operate in about the same way, scanning files either
as they arrive or when you try to do anything with them and
downloading updates automatically every day. Most of their functional
differences surface at the margins.

Of the three, Alwil Software's Avast (http://avast.com) is the sole
option for people still using pre-2000 versions of Windows; it
supports everything from Windows 95 on. Unfortunately, large parts of
its interface look like they haven't had an update since Windows 95.
Its primary screen appears to have been modeled after a car stereo,
and it has the odd habit of informing you of everyday events with
spoken-word recordings. ("Virus database has been updated.")

You'll hear the same recorded voice, plus a siren, whenever Avast
finds a virus -- such as when I downloaded a few test viruses off the
Web. But it ignored a flash drive with a folder full of viruses until
I opened that folder, so this program may not stop you from
unintentionally passing along viruses on those cheap devices.

Avast's bigger issue, however, may be its requirement that you
register with the Czech company through e-mail, then renew that
registration once a year. That's just enough of a chore that
distracted users may let their updates lapse.

AVG Technologies' free edition (http://free.avg.com) requires no extra
registration work, but it may tax your tolerance of pushy
salesmanship. The Dutch company's regular home page makes no mention
of the free version's existence, and downloading it from
http://free.avg.com requires clicking past two screens urging you to
opt for AVG's paid version.

This program's installer, in turn, prompts you to change your
browser's search engine to Yahoo and install a browser toolbar. This
Firefox and Internet Explorer add-on helps you adjust a "LinkScanner"
that warns you of dangerous sites in search results but also promotes
the paid release.

AVG users should also read the company's pop-up notifications of major
new releases carefully. Twice in recent years, readers have complained
that these upgrade-now alerts either ignored or barely mentioned the
free version in favor of advertising the paid edition.

AVG worked and looked better than Avast, with two exceptions. It
needed almost an hour longer than Avast to complete a full scan of a
Windows Vista system, then incorrectly labeled "tracking cookies" --
tiny text files left on the computer by some online ads -- as a
security issue. (They're a privacy issue, and a minor one at most.)
Like Avast, AVG ignored a flash drive loaded with viruses until I
navigated to the right folder.

Unlike Avast and Avira, AVG won't check for "rootkits" -- malicious
code buried deeper in Windows than normal viruses.

Avira's AntiVir Personal (http://free-av.com) exhibits some of the
same obnoxious "upselling" habits as AVG's software. Its installation
features a full-screen window pushing the German firm's paid software,
and every time it updates itself, it treats you to yet another pop-up
urging you to pay up. (Run a Web search for "Avira pop-ups" for help
disabling that nag.)

But aside from that, Avira seemed to do its job quietly and
effectively. It was even faster at scanning the Vista system than
Avast, taking just 44 minutes to inspect its contents. It jumped all
over the virus-infected flash drive a moment after I'd plugged it in,
offering to quarantine the offending files. And it was free of goofy
spoken-word prompts or gimmicky interfaces.

All of these programs could be improved -- and they'll have to later
this year, when Microsoft plans to introduce its own free antivirus
program. This influx of free antivirus choices may make life even less
pleasant for developers of "payware" security tools. But for people
looking to trim their computing costs in any way possible, it can't
happen fast enough.

Hmm. I still use a Win 98SE machine for arranging and making MIDI files with
MusicPrinter Plus. When I bought my Windows SP 'puter several years ago, I
asked the local (German) electronics store what was the most economical and
feasible approach to transferring files from the old to the new machine. I was
told to buy an USB card with included software to establish a LAN between the
two. Of course, I had to also buy a LAN cable. So I did and it worked like a
charm. Sorry, I can't give more details since I am not a genuine techie and
that's all I remember. I believe it accurate to state that Win98SE has quite a
bit more capability than Win98 "plain".

I recently updated my subscription for Norton Anti Virus for my Vista

tried to do the reinstall on my Windows 98 machine but it would not

I only use the old machine a few hours a month and dont want to pay

or pay to update the Norton 2001 which is currently installed on 98.

I think the solution is to install one of the free AV products that
works fine on Windows 98 and when it is running uninstall Norton.

What free AV do you recommend for this old machine.

I am very happy with AVG Free from Grisoft.com. I am not sure they still
have it up on their Website, but you can search for it and download it.
They still provide daily updates, even if they don't offer it for download.

Might have to go the paid route. Nod32 V 2.7 still supports win98.

I use AVG 7.5.552 and have not received a message about not updating the virus

I got a message the other day that the version of AVG I was using was
doing it's last update. They wanted me to download the newer version.
If I understand correctly the newer version won't work with Windows
   98. Has anyone else found a good free anti-virus that will update and
   work on Windows 98?
   Sincerely,
   Harold Epps
