How can I keep my Windows XP desktop icons from changing their screen
positions? I put them where I want them, and they stay there most of the
time -- but sometimes when I close a window that was full screen I see
the icons have been crammed into columns on the left, in a new
arrangement. From desktop / right click / Arrange icons by / "Auto
Arrange" and "Align to Grid" are both unchecked and scrambling still
happens.

The Arrange icons by name option does not work as I'd expect; some icons
always go to the leftmost column, some are arranged alphabetically, but
some others appear in random places. I tried putting numbers at the
start of the icon names and then using the arrange icons by name option,
but that won't preserve columns and it does NOT sort a third of them
using the numbers I assigned.

How can I lock them in place, or save an arrangement of them so I
can restore it when they scramble?
