Re: [windows-tips] Registry denial help.

Some programs can be real nuisances this way.  The simplest way of dealing with this is with msconfig.  Click on Start>Run and type the word msconfig.  Click on the Startup tab, find the offending programs and uncheck them.  When you reboot, they will no longer start up with Windows, but you will get a message from msconfig telling you changes have been made.  There will be box you need to check telling msconfig not to tell you this every time you boot up.  :o)

However, some programs [and Quick Time is one] will keep trying to add itself to your Windows startup.  You need to have some kind of program that will notify you whenever a program tries to add itself to your startup [my firewall ~ ZoneAlarm Pro v6.1 ~ has this capability] .  Then you can deny permission.

Thanks Veronica!!!

I was not able to use regedit, regedt32, or gpedit.msc. I was able to use

'3.2. Run As: secondary Logon as Administrator'

I did use hijackthis to delete the offending entry. Everything seems back to normal.

Since I have your attention for a minute maybe you can help me with another minor issue. I hate, almost as bad popups, apps that start on boot or login. Things like quicktime (I cant find a check box in the preferences for disabling) and roxio.

I've deleted any entry I can find in local machine, current user, users, current config/softwar/microsoft/windows/run.

I've run a search. Results show roxwatch.exe in localmachine/software/classes/appID.

any help with disabling that type of stuff would be appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried using regedt32.exe?  I was wondering
if the malware had compromised both registry edit programs.  I use regedt32,
rather then regedit.

BTW, I have WinXP, SP2, but do not have that particular entry in my
Registry.  There is nothing under HKCU...\system, so I'm wondering if the
malware just added that entry.  This is all mine shows:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\Shell

hijackthis came up with this entry...

"HKCU\Software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system,
disableregedit=1"

[I have not deleted this entry]

Info on this item confirms hijackers have gained some level of control...

I also have a problem with "my computer" not responding forcing a "reset"
boot.

thanks for any help you may forward

took control of my task manager but I have found a workaround for that.

I run XP pro on a amd 2600....I'm not sure what other info will be of
service...

are there any crack programs to regain admin control and route out the
offending *.exe?

I have deleted the offending file.
