If you load a huge image file your PC may run out of memory when
processing it.
This is not a problem with WinTopo, it is just that your image is too
big for your PC to handle. There are no restrictions on image size
within WinTopo, it is purely down to how much memory you have
installed in your PC.

After loading the image in WinTopo, you can click the
"Image->Information..." menu option to see WinTopo's estimate of the
memory required to process the image.

There are several ways to alleviate the problem:
1. Scan the image at lower resolution (or use the "Image->Reduce
Resolution..." option in WinTopo Pro. You need the image to be high
enough resolution to clearly show the level of detail that you need to
capture. Any higher than that is usually a waste.
2. Scan the image as black and white, or greyscale, if it is not a
colour image. A colour image takes 24 times more storage than a black
and white image, and 3 times more than a greyscale image. If the image
is colour but only uses a limited number of colours then scan it with
a palette option rather then full colour (or use WinTopo Pro's
"Image->Reduce Palette Colours..." option.)
3. On the "One-Touch Vectorisation" settings window, select the option
for "Use Processed Image" rather than "Retail Original Image". This
causes the original image to be discarded during vectorisation,
reducing the memory overhead.
4. Install more memory in your computer. These days 1Gb is a default
specification for a modest system. If you are doing serious image
processing then you could consider adding more. It is relatively
inexpensive.
