Monetization *is* an important focus area for this WiTi list.

The garden variety are:
a. dual license, gpl + close source(eg. MySQL)
b. give software for free and make money from training, support
and certification (eg. Redhat)
c. freemium, free for certain number of users/features and beyond
that the user pays

Please free to add (ton - 3) ways to this list :)
