I am very pleased to announce the creation of a new Machiavelli group at
Yahoogroups. Actually I had created this list long ago, but, thanks to the
initiative of Michael Anton, one of the members of my leo-strauss group, I
am now putting the machiavelli group into operation for the first time.
Michael Anton will serve as the discussion leader for the new group.l

Michael Anton works for the US government in the field of security and
foreign affairs. He has studied with Harry Jaffa, Harry Neumann, Charles
Kesler, Jim Nichols, Mark Blitz, and others, and he has composed the
following statement on the approach that we will take to the discussion:

"Statesman, writer and bon vivant, Niccolo Machiavelli is considered by many
to be the founder of modern poltical philosophy, and even of modernity
simply. He was also a very careful writer whose books demand the closest
attention to detail if they are to be understood.

In our time, the scholarship of Leo Strauss offers invaluable guidance to
our attempts to understand Machiavelli. His seminal book, Thoughts on
Machiavelli, is a treasure trove of beautiful and useful thoughts that
points the way to a full interpretation of Machiavelli’s challenging books.

This list is dedicated to understanding Machiavelli as he understood
himself, using Strauss as guide, while understanding that Strauss’s purposes
and Machiavelli’s do not always coincide, and that Strauss may at times
caricature Machiavelli for reasons that transcend simple scholarship."

I am looking forward to the discussion.
