Hi everyone,
ScientiaMobile just published a new snapshot of the WURFL data. In order to
download it, you'll need to hit:
http://wurfl.sourceforge.net/
and follow the link to download. This will introduce an important extra step:
whoever downloads and plans to use the new wurfl.xml snapshot will need to
accept the new license with which the wurfl.xml file and the data in it are made
available. The license is of course also part of the header of the wurfl.xml
file itself, so obtaining the file some other way is not a way to avoid the
licensing terms.
For your convenience, I also report the text of the new license at the end of
this message.
Members of this mailing list probably sensed that this was coming once we
discovered that DeviceAtlas was reselling our data dearly to third-parties. To
be honest with you, those are not the only offenders. Without going into names,
other companies, large and small, have blithely confessed that they intend to
keep using WURFL commercially without open-sourcing their code nor paying a dime
for the value that WURFL delivers to them. At this point, we expect those
company to be coherent and either stop using WURFL or respect the licenses with
which WURFL is delivered.
Of course, the snapshot in July was released with the old (very liberal)
licensing, so there is no immediate requirement to upgrade the repository with
the newer wurfl.xml. Who does, though, should be warned that they are accepting
new terms for the usage of the WURFL repository.
Please observe that we also updated the web_browser_patch.xml (also coming with
the same new WURFL license). The new patch has the magical property of turning
all unrecognized UA strings into web browsers. In other words, if you only use
the wurfl.xml, undetected devices will be assumed to be mobile devices. If you
add the patch file, undetected UAs will be assumed to be web browsers. This
change was made to respond to a popular request.
If you have any technical issues with the new snapshot, please post here, on the
ScientiaMobile forum or directly to me.
And now, as promised, the wording of the new license.
Thank you
