SEARCH FOR ET STARTS AT HOME
----------------------------
Starting today, anyone in the world with a desktop computer will be
able to join the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The
SETI@home project already has a list of nearly 400,000 people from 96
countries anxiously awaiting the final version of software that will
let them crunch data in search of intelligent radio signals from
advanced civilizations.

STUDENT SATELLITE SET FOR LAUNCH
--------------------------------
The TERRIERS satellite, built by students at Boston University and
scheduled for launch early tomorrow morning, could provide a much
better understanding of how changes in the ionosphere -- the
electrically charged region of the upper atmosphere -- affect global
communication systems, satellites, cell phones and pagers.

SHUTTLE ROLLS BACK FOR REPAIRS
------------------------------
Space shuttle Discovery was hauled off the launch pad today for
repairs to its external fuel tank which was damaged by hail during a
thunderstorm last weekend. The work to patch up the tank will delay
its mission to the International Space Station by at least a week.
Liftoff is now tentatively scheduled for May 27.
STARDUST MISSION UPDATE
-----------------------
NASA's Stardust mission, which will attempt the first ever comet
sample return, is heading into the solar system. The Jet Propulsion
Laboratory reports the release of latches on the probe sample return
capsule and communications problems with an instrument. Data was also
returned from a cometary and interstellar dust experiment.

The Hubble Space Telescope serendipitous survey of the sky has
uncovered exotic patterns, rings, arcs and crosses that are all
optical mirages produced by a gravitational lens, nature's equivalent
of having giant magnifying glass in space.

GREEN LIGHT FOR NEW UK TELESCOPE
--------------------------------
British astronomers learned this week that their proposal for a
special new telescope to survey southern skies has been approved.
VISTA -- the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy --
will survey large areas of sky for very faint stars and galaxies. In
a single exposure of only 10 minutes, it will be able capture the
images of 100,000 objects.

HAIL DAMAGE DELAYS NEXT SHUTTLE MISSION
---------------------------------------
NASA has ordered the shuttle Discovery off its launch pad to patch up
its fuel tank, which was damaged by hailstones last weekend. The
repairs will delay the shuttle's planned May 20 launch by at least a
week. The shuttle, making NASA's first flight in six months, is to
ferry supplies and equipment to the fledgling International Space
Station.

ASTRONOMERS CLOCK SUPERSONIC WINDS AT JUPITER
---------------------------------------------
Violent winds race around the poles of Jupiter at thousands of miles
an hour like cars round a racetrack, sometimes reaching supersonic
speeds. And these winds - known as "auroral electrojets" - may help
to explain why temperatures at the top of the jovian atmosphere are
much higher than would be expected for a planet five times farther
away from the Sun than Earth.

bright pink. The "Pink holes" were discovered using telescopes at
Parkes and Coonabarabran in the western plains of New South Wales
between 1994 and 1998.

NEW DELAY FOR NASA'S CHANDRA X-RAY OBSERVATORY
----------------------------------------------
The failure of an upper stage rocket on a U.S. Air Force launch
earlier this month will further delay NASA's $1.5 billion X-ray
observatory, the space agency said. The telescope is to be boosted
from the shuttle's cargo bay by the same upper stage that left a $250
million missile warning satellite in the wrong orbit earlier this
month.

Dr. Alan Penney has found that there are three planets forming a proper solar
system just 44 l.y. down the road.
This, according to BBC teletext p115, means there is a greatly increased chance
of an earth-like planet and hence, life.

MISSILE-WARNING SATELLITE IN WRONG ORBIT
----------------------------------------
The U.S. Air Force says a missile-warning satellite launched on
Friday by a Titan 4B rocket is stranded in the wrong orbit,
apparently because of a problem with its Inertial Upper Stage rocket
motor. The same type of upper stage is to be used this July to boost
the Chandra X-ray Observatory into high earth orbit from the space
shuttle Columbia.

SURVEY FINDS NEARLY 800 DEBRIS IMPACTS ON HUBBLE
------------------------------------------------
A survey of images and television footage from the last Hubble Space
Telescope servicing mission in February 1987 has revealed 788
potential debris impacts on various parts of the orbiting
observatory. A total of 2500 still frames and 17 hours of video were
checked for impact marks from natural and man-made space debris.

ASTRONOMERS PINPOINT 700 YEAR-OLD SUPERNOVA
-------------------------------------------
Astronomers have pieced together the scene of a crime that no one
saw: a 700-year-old star explosion nearly as bright as a full moon,
undocumented by early stargazers and unknown to modern-day
astronomers until only very recently.

Subject: SHUTTLE MISHAP SIMULATION PROVES KSC EMERGENCY READINESS
NASA News
National Aeronautics and
Space Administration
John F. Kennedy Space Center
Kennedy Space Center, Florida 32899
___________________________________________________________________________

KSC Release No. 20 - 99
SHUTTLE MISHAP SIMULATION PROVES KSC EMERGENCY READINESS
Kennedy Space Center will stage a simulated astronaut rescue mission
this week, based on the unlikely scenario of a crash landing at the Shuttle
Landing Facility (SLF).
After ninety-two successful Space Shuttle landings, no one has ever seen
such an event. However, KSC managers will imitate the improbable on March
17
as part of standard training procedures. The Mode 7 astronaut rescue
simulation will exercise all aspects of command and control, search and
rescue, and medical procedures required for the unlikely contingency.
"When you don't have real mishaps occurring day in and day out, you have to
find ways to keep the response team trained and ready," explained Ken
Tenbusch, KSC Landing Recovery Director and simulation planner. "We want to
design a scenario which will be as real as possible, so that it tests the
team and the organizational interaction that must take place for a
successful rescue effort. Our rescue forces have not been told what to
expect."
The scenario calls for orbiter Discovery to land short of SLF runway 15
during a simulated 9 a.m. landing attempt with a seven-member crew
following
an 11-day mission. Five astronaut candidates, one representative from the
Vehicle Integration Test office, and one fire/rescue worker will occupy an
orbiter mock-up placed in a wooded area adjacent to the runway. Though a
recovery team will be staged at the SLF, just like a real landing day, the
remote location of the mock-up will prevent a completely land based crew
rescue. This is a Mode 7 contingency which requires support from the air.
A NASA UH-1 helicopter or "Huey," called Search One, will deploy from the
SLF to gain a firsthand, aerial perspective of the fake crash site. The
situation is assessed and exact coordinates are then radioed back to four
Air Force HH-60 "Jolly" helicopters waiting at the SLF.
The first Jolly deployed will deposit needed emergency equipment at the
site. Two of the three remaining helicopters will be staffed with KSC/Cape
Canaveral Air Station fire/rescue personnel whose primary mission is to
pull
the stranded astronaut stand-ins out of the mock-up and prepare them for
preliminary triage. If a helicopter landing site can not be identified,
fire/rescue workers are required to "fast rope" from their hovering
helicopters. A fourth Jolly stands by for additional medical evacuation
support. Patrick Air Force Base provides two paratrooper rescue specialists
and one medical doctor in each of the four Jollies.
After fire/rescue successfully removes each crew member from the side hatch
or overhead window, Air Force medical personnel will perform preliminary
stabilization and decontamination activities at the established casualty
collection point about 200 feet from the mock-up. Patients that do not
require immediate treatment or airlift to area hospitals can be moved to a
mobile, intermediate medical care site about 1,250 feet from the mock-up
for
further assessment. The exercise concludes when the airlifted patients
arrive safely in the emergency rooms of participating area hospitals.
On March, 19, simulation managers and exercise participants will gather for
a lessons learned session to review and evaluate the Mode 7 exercise. The
many organizations that support Shuttle recovery efforts will apply the
insight gained from this exercise during their routine training efforts
throughout the year.
NOTE TO EDITORS:
Immediately following the exercise, key players in the simulation will be
made available to the media for comment and interviews. Interested media
should arrive at the KSC Press Site by 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17
for
bus transport to the mock-up crash landing site.
