Hello,

Please help. I am unable to print INSIDE WordPerfect/Classic. I AM ABLE
to print in OS X 10.3.9.

I have done everything I can see to select my printer inside OS X. But when
access FILE > PAGE SETUP .... [OR] .... FILE > PRINT .... all I get is
this error message: "Printer has not been chosen or driver not found".
Again, I CAN PRINT within OS X but NOT inside WordPerfect/Classic.

What am I doing wrong?? I would appreciate anything you can do to steer me in
the right direction. Thanks.

Michael

Classic and OS X are two different systems and the printer setup
functions of each don't overlap. So setting up a printer for X won't
give you access to it in Classic (in fact, there are always - in my
experience - two different drivers for printers, X and OS 9/
Classic). Here's what to do:

While you're in WordPerfect, click on the Apple menu, go to Chooser
and you should see your printer on the left side (if you've already
installed OS 9 drivers; if not, install them first and then come back
to this email).

Double-click on the printer in the left box. It should show up
highlighted on the right side (if it doesn't, trash the printer
preferences in the OS 9/Classic System Folder and the printer
extension in "Extensions" in the System Folder and reinstall the
driver from scratch and start again).

Once it shows up highlighted on the right side, you should also see a
button below that says "setup." Click on it, follow the prompts and
then close the Chooser.

You'll then get a message telling you to change your page setup. Do
it, from inside WP. When you do this, the printer driver's software
should come up with some basic global setting options. Check
whatever works for you and then close the window.

Then try printing your document.

Good luck.

WPMac doesn't support footnotes in columns. To change footnotes
to endnotes or the reverse, download "Note Editor 5.0" from the
Files section here.

Please regard the following as tentative, even uncertain, information.
Please check it yourself. I can't as I have not upgraded to Tiger yet:

There may be an exception to this now with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. I have
read one report that in the Print Dialog Box (or maybe it's the Page
Setup Dialog Box) of a Classic application a drop down menu appears
listing Mac OS X printers that are not even installed in Classic. I
gather that these printers do not show up in the Chooser.

My Epson printer came with an OSX CD. The OSX driver was an
automatic install, but I needed to open the package to find the
OS 9 driver, and drag it into the Extensions folder of the OS 9
System Folder. Easy enough to do, but there were no instructions
for it.

You have to select the printer from system 9. There are separate print
utilities. In X its Print Center I think and in 9 its something else. But in 9,
go
to Apple menu, then chooser, and choose the printer. In my case, I have an
Apple 4/600 printer which still works great after 9 years, and I have to also do
"setup" before I print the first time.

The undersigned luddite hasn't upgraded yet, but Apple has some
pages on Classic support in Tiger. See the new link to "Classic
Applications in Tiger" in the Links section here, which has a
link to a page on printing, which says:

apparently confirming what Steve heard. Assuming this is new
in Tiger, Apple has actually enhanced Classic support in the
new OS, something I'm very happy to see.

IAC, don't forget Ed Mendelson's recipe for a free Print to
PDF driver for Classic, in "WP and OSX" in the Links section
here.

How does that work in reverse under Tiger? One of my favorite office
printers (a Lanier LD122) cannot collate using the OSX driver but
does that just fine under an old OS9 driver. Can I continue to use
OS 9 drivers if I upgrade to Tiger?

I have upgraded and the upgrade process (including launching Classic
that then asks if you want to update that, too) seems to choose the
Laser Writer 8 printer in Chooser. That is then configured for
whatever OS X printer you have and you can print automatically via a
.ps file (don't ask me how, I merely saw the .ps file being created).
However, since I have an OS 9 driver for that printer that gives me a
lot of control over the printer, I have reverted to the OS 9 driver
under Chooser.

It works, but it adds a layer to the process even if you don't have
to do anything. No new fonts become available as a result of this
access to OS X printers.

I read in that same posting that the drivers installed in the Classic
System Folder appear along with the Mac OS X versions of the drivers,
so, yes, is the answer to your question.

The droplet I posted yesterday to the Files section is part of a larger
project, so that a Mac user with AppleWorks (came with some Macs),
Pages (I think that iWork, including Pages, will come with some new
Macs), or TextEdit, which comes with all Macs, will be able to convert
a MS Word file to WP just by dropping it on the icon.

We use a macro to run our letterhead. It works great. Because we have
secretary's who work for multiple attorneys, the secretary's have separate
macros for each attorney with the only difference between the macros the
email line. I would like to update the macro so when it is run, it will
stop at the email line and provide a list of attorney email addresses which
the secretary would then pick from depending on which attorney she is doing
the work for. Can this be done? If so, can someone explain or guide me on
how to begin the update process?

Here's a sample. Replace the email line with this. The "Menu" line is all one
line, i.e. the
next line begins with "Case":

Menu (Var01;"Choose email address:"
{"alpha@...";"bravo@...";"charlie@..."})
Case (Var01;{1;alpha;2;bravo;3;charlie};cancel)
Label (cancel)
Return
;
Label (alpha)
Type (alpha@...)
Go (continue)
;
Label (bravo)
Type (bravo@...)
Go (continue)
;
Label (charlie)
Type (charlie@...)
Go (continue)
;
Label (continue)
; continue your macro here

Let me know any more questions.

The first line didn't quite copy correctly. It should read:

Menu (Var01;"Choose email address:";
{"alpha@...";"bravo@...";"charlie@..."})

which should be all one line (wrapped perhaps, depending on
how you size the window) in the macro editor.

Rich's question yesterday about a letterhead macro
reminded me that I read recently that many attorneys
use WP, both Windows and Mac, because of security
issues with MS Word.

I'd be happy to work up a few things that would be
especially useful in a law office. The "Document

letter templates and Pleading Paper macros. What

That issue has been severely overblown in the past. It's true that it is
possible to have extraneous information (user information and deleted
edits) left in a Word file, but that is easy to avoid if you know how.

One needs to turn off "Fast Saves enabled" in Word's preferences.

Go into File --> Properties and make sure that no information has been
entered there.

It is a good idea to do a final Save As on your document before sending
it to anyone. This should flush any extraneous information in your file.

For those who want to be extra cautious, you can always save your Word
document as a PDF, and lock it.

When I try to open a WP document, it is dimmed. Pages Help says the
following:

If the document you want to open is dimmed, Pages cannot import it. If

format Pages can read.

Pages can import the following file formats: plain text (.txt), Rich

Looks like it can't do WP.

Somewhere, a long, long time ago (no, in this galaxy), I saw a macro
that was supposed to do the following. If I remember the set-up
accurately, I was to take all my boiler-plate clauses and save each
clause as a separate document in a Library. I would (if I had done
it) then have a Library for Leases, Separation Agreements, Wills, etc.

I would start preparing (for example) a Farm Lease. At the right
spot, I would run the macro. It was to open the Libray/Farm leases,
display the names of the documents and allow me to select one. The
macro would insert that selection, then put me back in charge. It
would also make sure Outlining was running so the inserted paragraph
and what followed it would be properly numbered.

Before I could break the habit of "cut and paste", I lost the macro.

Perhaps such a macro might be useful outside the lawyer business, if
someone else compiles documents with frequent inclusions of
boiler-plate. Speech-writers?

Save the WP doc as RTF and open that in Pages. MetaMacro, in the
Files section here, includes a Save as RTF macro, so you could do
that on hundreds of files at a time if need be.

I tested Pages and was thoroughly unimpressed.

I found a fault right off the Bat I wanted to insert a Logo in the
Header on most programs including Word The header window automatically
grows as needed. In Pages you set up the header box to a particular
size. and if it what need doesn't fit tough luck.

I an wondering if I can bring my equations from WP, and also I do "answer

When I run it, I don't get the Not Valid error (if you have
a window open when run, do you get that error before
the menu appears, or after you've made a choice from it?),
but I get a Label Not Found error when I choose the second
menu item. This is because in the Case line you have "SFCC"
and the second Label is "SFC", while they must match exactly.

Also note that this part of the code must conclude with a

Label (continue)

I've put the corrected macro in a file in the Temporary_Items
folder at the top of the Files section here. Let us know how
that runs.

John: again thank you.

I made the changes you referenced (ie. SFCC to SFC and ended
that section of the macro w/ Label (continue)), and running the
macro w/ a document open. Unfortunateley, I am still getting the
"Macro Terminated: This command not valid here". I'm not
entirely sure what to look for so it may be something simple.
Apologies for the hand holding. rich

At the top of the macro, add this line:

Step (On)

Now when you run the macro, you'll see a new window at the bottom of
your screen with the line of macro code that's about to be executed.
Press any key to execute that line, and you'll see the next line appear
in the window. Continue stepping through it until you get the error.
What line produces it?

Update: I copied the part of the macro we are working on into
another copy and it works to a point. The dialog box comes up
to "choose email address", but, once I make a selection the
macro hangs up or stops. It actually puts the email address into
the header, however, it does not continue w/ the rest of the
letterhead? Any thoughts? Thanks, rich

john - added the "step (on)" line at the top of macro (that is a
pretty cool tool). Anyway, it hangs up at the line beginning with
"Menu (Var01; "choose email address .....". Any thoughts.
