Very odd. I've never seen or heard of that happening before, but the largest
files I've ever thrown at that particular conversion are a 700-some KB WP-Mac
document (large mostly because of two images) and a 200-some KB WP-Win 8/9 doc.

> Is there a way to get it to open?

As others have advised, WP-Mac should be able to open it, with the steps
mentioned in the "Opening and Converting in WP Mac" document in the Conversions
folder of this group's File's section.

Since you were originally trying to open the file in NeoOffice, I'm curious what
happens if you try to run the file through the wpd2sxw conversion program (and
then, assuming a document was created, open the converted document in Neo).
wpd2sxw and an AppleScript droplet (GUI) for it are available in this package:

3.5e has more features but, more importantly, it's more stable, and
recommended for all users. For best results, d/l a copy from one of
the sites in the Links section here, and also d/l the OS 8/9/Classic
updater.

I bought a new printer, a Canon Pixma IP5200R. A wonderful printer,
but ... I didn't realise that I would need a printer driver for
printing my collection of educational materials, you guessed it, in
WordPerfect 3.5e.
These are the solutions I know of: import my documents into AbiWord,
losing a considerable amount of layout settings. Or print to PDF
(printToPdf), but also that is far from perfect.
Other ideas?

Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger has a new Classic feature. You can print to _any_
printer, that has a Mac OS X driver, from a Classic application.
Launch the Chooser and select the LaserWriter 8 driver.

For versions of OSX earlier than Tiger, your printer's software
probably includes a driver for Classic, although you may have to
install it manually.

There are several links in the Links section here with support for
Classic applications in the various flavors of OSX.

I'd really be surprised if, this far out, any new printers still include drivers
for Mac OS 8/9.

That said, if John R's tips don't work for you for some reason, you can also use
the LaserWriter8 driver with any laser printer's .PPD file to print to file and
let Mac OS X's Preview convert the resulting .ps file to PDF and print it to
your printer. Although I own the PrintToPDF chooser extension for Mac OS 8/9,
this has been my preferred way of generating PDFs from WP for the past few
years; the results and the quality from Mac OS X-generated PDFs are far superior
to those from PrintToPDF (unless you need the headers>PDF bookmarks feature).
(And with a bit of AppleScript, you can automate the entire process so that all
you have to do is the printing to file from WP and then the rest will happen
automatically). Just choose a color laser's PPD file if you want to print in
color, as I believe LW8 and B&W PPDs convert the colors to greyscale before
saving the .ps file, unlike the Mac OS X print system.

Thank you all for the response. I tried the LaserWriter8 driver in
the Chooser and that works, even in color. But I have no idea how to
take the fonts in the conversion process. Most of my files use the
Futura MD BT font. Also I noticed that columns didn't work out well
in the conversion. Any further suggestions?

For WWP in OSX Classic, see "Getting Started with WP Mac" in the Files
section here. For native OSX programs, search this group's archives
for "Abiword" and "NeoOffice".

Or Nisus, or use the MetaMacro utility, in the Files section here,
to save any number of files at once in a WP PC format or RTF, at which
point you can open them in Word or any other program that reads those
formats.

What's wrong with just using WordPerfect in Classic mode? It's really
quite seamless, except for the initial time to launch Classic? I would
call this "normal fashion," and if you're actually launching Classic
and WP, you should not get any garbage characters. You should only see
those if you're trying to read it in a text editor.

Printing directly from an application, such as WP, would give the
best results. Most fonts print well to PDF but not all. I don't
know why columns would present a problem.

I'm not sure about the columns (they really should work without any
problem; I haven't ever had any problems), but you can embed fonts by
choosing "Save as File" from the menu in the Print dialogue (the menu
that displays "General" by default) and then setting "Font Inclusion"
to anything other than "None" (I usually use "All" or "All but
standard 13"--the latter if I'm using, in addition to "custom fonts",
some of the standard PDF fonts that are installed on every system and
want to cut down on the filesize a bit).

I'm away at the moment, but I can explain in greater detail next week
if this doesn't make sense :-)

Spare the effort. I found it out already - as I said in a my previous

Mac.

In that msg I also wished all here a good start of 2006 and I repeat

You probably can't boot into OS9 with your G4, but it doesn't matter.

Can you print from other classic apps? If not, you just need to install
HP's OS 9 printer driver (or update to OS 10.4, which uses the
Laserwriter 8 driver to print in Classic).

WP 3.5e with the OS 8/9/Classic updater, both available in the Links
section here, is definitely the way to go.

Update or disable Classic Quicktime. Chances are you won't need
it anyway.

Dear Cathy

You can start Classic once you've booted under OSX - you don't need
to be able to boot into OS9.

Experience with HP printers (admittedly an inkjet) is that they don't
work from Classic even if there are OS9 drivers, but others may have
had a different experience. The workround I used was to download
PrintToPDF from (http://www.jwwalker.com/) - it's shareware. There
are other free workrounds that the archives here can explain.
PrintToPDF was my default printer in the chooser. It meant that WP
files would be printed to a pdf file that could then be printed from
any suitable OSX app (eg. Adobe Reader, Preview). It was perfect for
me because I tend to print text-based files with few or no graphics.

I should have added, that now I use Tiger (10.4.3) I can print
directly to my HPprinter from WP using the Laserwriter. Further, WP
3.5e with the updates is so much better than 3.5.

Apple did Classic printing right, finally, in OS 10.4. But
Cathy should be able to print with what she's got: it's
just a matter of finding the right printer driver.

Agreed. Entirely better. I'd strongly recommend that
all WP Mac users download 3.5e and the 8/9/Classic
updater, if they haven't already.

John

I agree that Cathy should be able to print directly under 10.3.9 to
her printer using an OS 9 driver - the way that I did at home to my
Epson. However, I spent months trying to get my HP6100 at work to
print from Classic, all to no avail. HP printers under 10.3.9 were a
mixed bag according to users on the r8ix list. Let's hope she has
more success than I had.

Happy New Year everyone

It may be a matter of contacting HP - or upgrading to 10.4, which
is worth it anyway IMO. Spotlight is spectacular, and other things
are faster. OSX is a work in progress, according to Apple, but it
showed some maturity with Tiger.

I have an HP LaserJet 1300 which I print to from WP-Mac (and I suppose other
Classic apps, too, but WP-Mac is the only one I can swear to) on 10.3.9.
s well.
I think the 1200 was the model that preceded mine, so it should ship with Mac OS
8/9 drivers a

The setup procedure I used was something like this:
1. Start Classic
2. Find the Mac OS 8/9 driver installer on the HP CD (it's probably also
available from HP.com) and install
3. Set up the printer using the Desktop Printer Utility (?)--iirc, LaserWriter 8
doesn't directly support USB laser printers--choosing the correct PPD, giving it
a nice name, etc.
4. Select the print from the Print dialogue box in WP-Mac

For some odd reason, Classic seems to forget that the printer exists between
restarts, so I have to repeat steps 3 and 4 each new Classic session :-( It may
be related to whether I have the printer on when Classic starts or some other
wierdness, but it's not a big enough hassle for me to worry about, especially
since I'm not printing every time I'm in Classic.

Hope this helps,
Smokey

Gee whiz, thanks for all the help and so quickly!!! I think
the first thing for me to do is download 3.5e and the OS8/9
"patches"(?), make sure I've got the most current printer
driver, although I feel like I've downloaded a bazillion
recently trying to print. It may take me most of the week
to get through this - I'm a school teacher and we go back to work
tomorrow. I will keep you posted on my progress and undoubtedly
will have new questions.
Thanks again.

Isn't this a great group? I think the quality of the program inspires
helpfulness in users.

The OS 8/9/Classic updater is the only one you need.

Product Description:
NeoOffice is a fully-featured set of office applications (including
word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for
Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite, NeoOffice
incorporates dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and
exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft
Office. Unlike the Mac OS X release of OpenOffice.org, NeoOffice does
not require the X11 windowing system.

Released as free, open-source software under the GNU General Public
License (GPL), NeoOffice is fully functional and stable enough for
everyday use. The software is actively developed, and updates and
improvements are available on a regular basis.
What's new in this version:
	 * Better support for multiple monitors
	 * Additional improvements in font handling and text layout
	 * Significantly improved import of WordPerfect for
Macintosh documents via libwpd-0.8.4
	 * Fixes for many additional bugs reported against 1.2 Alpha
	 * Requires Mac OS X 10.3 or later
	 * For a more complete list of changes since NeoOffice/J
1.1, see the release notes.
