Of course Apple likes making money, and they did change their
name from Apple Computer to Apple Inc., reflecting the iPod/
music share of their business, and the iPhone just might be the
next big thing . . . I just hope Apple doesn't stop writing the OS
completely.

Subject: Default app for WP files

Ever since I downloaded and installed Abi Word, it is now the default
application for all my WordPerfect and Word files. I've tried in vain
to correct this with the finder's "get info" command. When I select a
WordPerfect file, get info, and set the "open with" to the WP app, if
I click "change all" and then "continue" on the confirmation screen,
it doesn't change any of them. (And if any of the files had been
changed individually--as described in the next step--it changes them
all back to the Abi Word icon again.)

I can go in and do this individually, file by file, but (1) when I
do, the ABI Word icon changes to a gibberish icon, that I then have
to delete to reveal the WP icon underneath it; and (2) the file will
now open with WP, but as soon as I save it, the icon reverts to the
AbiWord icon.

Anyone know how to fix this? This is the only way to change the
default application that I've seen in the MacOS Help; I've looked at
the preferences for Abi Word, but can't find anything that makes it
the default app for all kinds of files.

I think you need to reset your Launch Services database. The free OSX
utility Onyx will do this. Link in the Links section here.

You could try the DefaultApp preference pane
<http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/>, though I haven't had
any luck with it with so-called Classic applications.

One option is to delete AbiWord from your machine. Then do a change
all through the Get Info. Reboot. If you want AbiWord, just download
it again. Personally, as a way of opening WP files in an OSX
application, I prefer NeoOffice.

Subject: Introducing QuickHelp
jrethorst
Send Email Send Email

WP 3.5e shipped with a Help module, containing several
files (general, macro, grammar) that are all accessed from
the Help menu. The general file can also be accessed with
the Help command on the [Classic] Apple menu. This is in
addition to balloon help and the wonderfully interactive
WordPerfect Guide, using the Macintosh Guide engine, both
also available from the Help menu.

There's yet _another_ WP Help module, which has sat unused
in my Help folder and probably many others. This is
QuickHelp, which I think was going to be part of WP Help in
the OpenDoc environment, which Apple canceled before it saw
the light of day.

QuickHelp has an excellent index, and even better
searching. Both standard Help and the WP Guide have string
search, while QuickHelp supports an advanced Boolean
syntax.

I've never seen another Mac program with as many different,
independent sources of assistance.

For that matter, the manual is available (in the Files
section here) in two formats: PDF and Envoy.

I put QuickHelp on the SheepShaver image but,
unfortunately, something's wrong with the copy I used and
it doesn't work well. A good copy, plus a more recent version
of SheepShaver, when one is released, will be on an update to
that image.

Meanwhile, QuickHelp is available to all of us, on any OS
version, in the Files section here (this copy is a good
one). On my machine, I put the QuickHelp folder in an
out-of-the-way place and put an alias to the WordPerfect
Help file in my OtherMenu/script menu, where it's as easy
to access as the two other WP Help engines are on WP's Help
menu. The OtherMenu utility, BTW, is a terrific addition to
the Classic or SheepShaver environment.

Great guide on the set up and thanks for the already setup installer John!

But I noticed that the memory allocation in the Installer guide was
only 256 MB... does anyone know if this can be increased (e.g. to 1
GB)or does it lead to unstable functioning with the Mac OS 9
ROM/system (would be strange if so but I'm not assuming anything!)??

AFAIK it can be increased to any amount. I just put the default at 256
considering that most OSX users probably have about 1 gb, of which
some goes to the OS and some would go to other processes. OSX
handles virtual memory very well, though.

Hi guys downloaded the .zip John provided and it works great except
it's OS 7.5... can the SheepSaver OS be updated to OS 9?

E.g. Can I imply use a OS 9 CD installer as you would on a normal
Mac?? Is it just the ROM and so could I replace it with a OS 9 ROM?

Also I noticed that dragging and dropping installers don't seem to
work , I get the "doc cannot be opened, because application program
that created it could not e found" - a few posts on other forum sys a
workaround is putting the files on a CD , loading the cD through SS
and THEN trying the installer. Can that work?

Sorry for all the questions but most forums on the web on this prog
seem either empty, unpopulated, outdated or not very helpful tbh!

I don't run SheepShaver myself, but I've read a lot of discussion
about it.

Here is SheepShaver's home, where you can find lots of information:
http://gwenole.beauchesne.info/en/projects/sheepshaver

On that page you will see that SheepShaver only supports up to OS
9.0.4. However, I've heard from several folks who have not been able
to successfully use OS 8.1 or later. Note that OS 8 and beyond are
commercial releases of the Mac OS, they are not available via free
download.

I made a regular HFS disc image in Disk Utility.
Launched sheepshavergui, added it to the list,
installed to that image.
Since the only OS 9 I had was 9.2, I installed 8.6 & it works great.

As Randy points out, SS supports up to 9.0.4. I have not heard of
problems with any flavor of 8. YMMV.

As Craig says, SS will recognize a CD. Or list any other image in
SS GUI that you want SS to recognize. Another approach is quit SS,
mount its image in OSX, copy installers onto it, unmount it and load
SS again.

I have read a number of responses here about converting Wordperfect
files to Word. Most of the suggestions here and elsewhere are very
specific to version of Wordperfect and whether the original platform
was PC or Mac.

I have some old Wordperfect files and have no idea whether I created
them on a PC or Mac, much less what version they're in. Is there any
hope of retrieving the text? I don't really care so much about
formatting, just trying to save myself some typing. Also, I don't have
a version of Wordperfect and would prefer not to spend the money on a
program I don't expect to use after converting the files.

Any ideas?

Probably the easiest and cheapest thing to do would be to download:

NeoOffice (free)
<http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/index.php>

and it to open your documents and save them as .doc files for use in
Word (or continue using NeoOffice as your main word processing
application. ) Just about all of your formatting should be saved.
Or, if you don't care about the formatting, you could save the files
in "plain text" format.

You could, of course, download SheepShaver and WP/Mac from this
list's Web site. That would be free also, but slightly more complex.

A few weeks ago I posted something about Google Desktop.
Largely off-topic, except that this search application,
cutting-edge technology (if not quite ready for prime time)
uses Spotlight plug-ins, including the one Gero Herrmann
wrote for WP.

So our trusty program, abandoned by Corel for ten years, is
still current with leading developments for the Macintosh.

A while before that a usenet poster reported a problem with
equations he was doing either with MathType or Microsoft
Office's Equation Editor. He had to have the equation along
the Y axis, e.g. rotated 90 degrees to the left. When he
copied/pasted it into Word and rotated it the text was
converted to bitmaps and printed at poor resolution. I did
a quick check with WP: made an equation in our equation
editor, pasted it into the graphics editor and rotated it
90 degrees. It printed at full resolution.

So our trusty program, left for dead ages ago, can still do
things the software avant garde cannot.

I'm giving a little bit of help to the developers of a music
notation program, Overture, as they ready Mac version
4 for release. The leading competitor in this market is
Finale, a program almost as bloated as a certain word
processor from Microsoft. It will do everything, but the
interface is grotesque and it's hard to do anything. By
great contrast, Overture will do anything anyone would
reasonably need, and is fast with an elegant interface. The
analogy runs:

Finale : Overture : : MS Word : WordPerfect

Overture is fun to use and I'm glad to give this minor
amount of help to what's essentially a small operation, so
I did the high resolution OSX icon for them. The on-topic
part of this is that I did it without much talent but with
the draw module of WordPerfect 3.5e (a review of which
found its Bezier curves as good as Adobe Illustrator's) and
then dropped it into Icon Composer, which comes with the
development tools for OSX.

So our trusty program, hung out to dry by the bean counters
these many moons, still honks.

I'd recommend trying AbiWord <http://www.abisource.com> - we generally
use the latest, most advanced WordPerfect import library available
(LibWPD) and so we can import just about every form of WordPerfect
files, including damaged files that might not even load at all in
WordPerfect. You can then export to just about any file format you
like - we recommend RTF in most cases.

If you do have trouble loading a file, just attach it to a bug report
at <http://bugzilla.abisource.com>.

Ryan,

Do you have a sense of how LibWPD compares to MacLinkPlus Deluxe by
Dataviz for translating WP Mac files?

Is there a way to use LibWPD and/or AbiWord under Mac OS X to batch
process Wordperfect Mac files to something else.

Thanks.

I'd like to point out that AbiWord's latest version, just downloaded,
still cannot handle WP for Mac footnotes. NeoOffice deals with them

Ryan, that might be true for AbiWord in general, and I'm sure it is
for your Win32 builds which are regularly updated for new release and
development milestones, but the latest Mac AbiWord build is
hopelessly outdated (2.4.5, from 11-Aug-2006--and thus has a
relatively ancient libwpd, as Geoff has mentioned), and it doesn't
look like hub or fjf plan to spin a new one any time soon, as far as
I can tell from the nosebleed seats :-(

SAN FRANCISCO, April 25 — Apple Inc. surpassed even the
most optimistic forecasts for its usually tepid second
quarter, delivering an 88 percent increase in profit on
strong sales of Macintosh computers and iPod music players.
The company said on Wednesday that its profit rose to $770
million from $410 million in the comparable quarter last
year. Apple sold 1.5 million Macs in the quarter, a record
for the company.

In an interview, Steven P. Jobs, Apple's chief executive,
called the quarter a "blowout," and noted that the strong
sales and market share gains came even though the company
had not made any major upgrades to its lines of portable
and desktop computers.

"The Mac is clearly gaining market share, with sales
growing 36 percent — more than three times the industry
growth rate," Mr. Jobs said. Overall personal computer
sales increased only about 11 percent during the quarter,
according to the market researcher IDC.

Apple's strength was particularly notable in that it came
during the quarter in which Microsoft finally released the
long-awaited Vista version of its Windows operating system,
an event that the PC industry was counting on to spur a
wave of computer upgrades.

Mr. Jobs noted that Dell had recently returned an earlier
version of Windows to its product line, which he said was
an indication that demand for Vista had not been
overwhelming.

Apple reported revenue of $5.26 billion, an increase of
more than 20 percent over the $4.36 billion in the same
period last year. Per-share profit increased to 87 cents
from 47 cents.

On average, analysts were expecting earnings of 64 cents a
share on sales of $5.17 billion for the quarter, according
to a survey by Thomson Financial.

Apple executives said the company benefited from lower
component costs, as well as surging demand for notebook
computers. Of Apple's total computer sales, 59 percent were
notebooks.

The earnings report sent shares of Apple up more than 7
percent to $102.44 in after-hours trading on Wednesday,
topping the $100 mark for the first time. The shares rose
$2.11 to close at $95.35 in the regular trading session.

It was Apple's profitability during the quarter that most
impressed Wall Street analysts. Its gross profit margin
reached 35.1 percent, up from 29.8 percent in the year-ago
quarter. Company executives said it was the company's most
profitable second quarter ever. Sales typically slow in the
second quarter as it comes between the holidays and buying
for school in the fall.

"They're defying the laws of gravity when it comes to
profitability," said Eugene A. Munster, an analyst at Piper
Jaffray.

Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief finance officer, told
analysts +that he expected gross margins to decline during
the third quarter, to about 32 percent. Apple tends to sell
lower margin computers to school districts in the third
quarter, and component prices are also expected to be
higher, he said.

In the third quarter the company expects revenue to climb
to about $5.1 billion and earnings to reach about 66 cents
a share, slightly lower than analysts' forecasts.

Mr. Munster said the appeal of the Macintosh was clearly
expanding beyond its traditional niche. "There's a global
shift in how people see personal computers — for
entertainment, creativity and good looks," Mr. Munster
said. "Apple has found that sweet spot, and with almost no
competition."

Apple said Mac sales accounted for 56 percent of revenue
during the second quarter, with music-related products,
including iPods and iTunes sales accounting for the other
44 percent.

Apple sold 10.5 million iPods during the quarter. Earlier
this month the company said it had sold a total of 100
million iPods.

Apple had earlier said it was delaying the release of the
next version of its Mac operating system, called Leopard,
because it needed to divert resources to its iPhone
project. The iPhone is scheduled to ship in late June,
through an agreement with Cingular, and cost between $500
and $600. Mr. Oppenheimer said that because Apple planned
to deliver periodic software enhancements to the iPhone,
accounting rules would require it to book deferred revenue
and costs and amortize both over a two-year period.

Apple said it ended the second quarter with $12.6 billion
in cash.

Actually, they don't seem to think that.

In this recent discussion they acknowledged that the Macintosh market
is growing and they showed some interest in developing for the
platform again:

Check out the posts by Jay Larock.

Whether this will result in them actually developing for the Mac
again though, is anybody's guess.

NeoOffice worked like a charm, though Word 2004 (the version I have)
is not one of the Save As options. Little matter, I was able to open
my files, which was the most important thing.

Thanks for everyone's help here, that included an offer to convert
some files. It took me a while to try this out, once I worked through
the posts that weren't totally over my head. I'm looking forward to
playing around with NeoOffice.

Thanks again!

Microsoft Word's file format has been the same for at least the last
three versions of Word, so you don't need to look for a Word 2004
format specifically.
