You're right -- I believe I did see that mentioned somewhere. Unless I
can find one or more sets of installation disks (I'd have ones from
both my wife's mini and my older PowerMac) *and* discover they came
with 9.0 *and* they aren't specific to those models I guess I'll just
have to be content with 7.5! (Those graphics not showing annoys me,
not that it matters with any of the files I care about, but I was
hoping that being able to run 9 would fix that.) Something about not
looking a gift horse in the mouth does come to mind, however.

I just got off the Apple Store chat with Nina, who was a very helpful and
patient Apple Expert. She said that what is happening is that they already
had a bunch of iMacs built, with Tiger installed on them. Then, when
Leopard Day happened, they had to start doing erase-installs of Leopard. If
you order an iMac today, you might get one with Tiger installed - but you
will have the Leopard install disks, so you could upgrade them yourself. A
hassle? Sure, when you are used to getting that "It just works" freshness
from Apple (I was floored when my MacBook was fully charged out of the
box!) But, installing Mac OS X isn't difficult or terribly time consuming.
About an hour from start to finish, and involves you for about 5 minutes.

But, if you want to wait, that's understandable. Just wanted to let you
know that you won't be stuck with Tiger, just having to run the install
yourself.

Plus, I hear big things will happen on Nov 6, so it might be better to wait
anyway.

This is a footnote to the Leopard/SS/OS9/Classic
discussion.

People have been talking about being able, with
Leopard, to reboot into OS9/Classic. One could do
this on older PPC machines; I have a Titanium
Powerbook with this capability.

However, on the last PPC machines, Apple designed them
so that you could NOT re-boot into OS9. I have one of
these, so I am still running WP on OS 10.4.10 with
Classic. My local Apple dealer says that if I can't
re-boot into OS 9 now, I won't be able to do it with
Leopard. SS here I come when I get the next Mac...

SS will only support up to MOS 9.0.4 (I believe because SS doesn't support VM)

Are you printing to a directly connected printer or a Network printer?
If a network printer, how did you accomplish it?

FWIW, I got both Mangia and Framemaker to work just fine under
SheepShaver on the

powerbook G4, running 10.4.10 -- including printing! I had to use the
Laserwriter 8 driver

for Mangia for some reason -- nothing happened with the AdobePS driver although
I didn't

try very hard to figure out why not since the other one worked.

Don't tell anyone, but they all (including WP) just feel better under
SheepShaver than Classic!

Come Christmastime i think a new external hard drive and a family license
version of Leopard

may be under the tree. Methinks it's time to invest in storage companies --
Time Machine is

going to sell a lot of extra storage.

When I sold my 8600, I gave them all my old MacOS install disks.
Now I regret it.

Anyway, I have an OS 8.5 System folder. I replaced the 7.5 with it.
Sheepshaver starts fine. Most things work. (The apple menu is empty.)
But the System Folder does not get its special icon. And when I shutdown
I get a warning that there is no valid System Folder, so that starting up
again may be impossible. But starting up again works.

So for now I'm staying with OS 7.5.

Another thing I did: I used Disk Utility to make a 1.5G .dmg file.
Copied the OS9 applications folder I had for Classic to it. Added it
as a second disk to SheepShaver. So now I can run other classic
applications.

Open the 8.5 system folder and double-click on the Finder. A dialog
will say it can't be opened. Ok that and close the folder. Does it now
have its special badge, i.e. is it "blessed"? If so, it should then
start up from that folder without problems. I'd only have one system
folder on a volume at one time, though.

Yes, it is an ethernet network printer. Brother something or other. I
didn't do anything in particular -- it just worked! It's the only
printer I have and I imagine it's set as the default in OS X. I
followed the instructions in John's package. Using either the Adobe PS
or Laserwriter 8 driver it comes up with the print-to-file dialogue and
then you navigate to the folder in the "unix" drive that's been set up
and that's all it takes. Oh, yes, I did have to follow the
instructions to get the folder-action on the OS X side to take.

That navigation should stick, from one session to the next.

The folder actions machinery is a little quirky, even in
Tiger (I understand Leopard has addressed the issue). You
may have to disable folder actions, re-enable them, assign
the printing/PDF script to the folder, and log out and in.

I think it did, but I probably did confuse things by having to go to
the Laserwriter 8 driver for Mangia.

All I remember is following your instructions and it worked fine
thereafter -- whatever I did, I only did once.

Printing under Sheepshaver seems to be a case of using adobe printer
and that will link to whatever printer OS X is using - if that's a
network printer, off it goes. No problems yet.

Correct. The Adobe driver just makes a postscript file
in the designated folder. The folder action sees the
new file and prints it, using default printer and
settings, or opens it with the default application for
postscript documents, which is Preview.

Just to make sure people see it again -- it also works that way with
the Laserwriter 8 driver -- I needed to use that when the Adobe
driver didn't seem work with Mangia (it did work with WP.)

My two machines are a 1.25 ghz G4 iMac (PPC) and
MacBook Pro with Intel Core Duo (not Core Duo 2). I
ran a spellcheck on a 48,000 word document with footnotes
that had no misspellings, so WP went through the
document without stopping for user input. The check
took 16 seconds on PPC and 20 seconds on Intel, but
all Macintoshes for sale now have the next generation
Intel chip, the Core Duo 2, so I'd imagine that WP
is generally faster with that chip and SheepShaver than
in Classic.

I included an Applescript applet named something like
(I'm not at home now) "Desktop Reset" for this purpose.
It's in the Utilities folder.

Please - the place to look for answers to issues not related to WP is through a
web search,
not here, because this forum is focused on WP only. For example, if you search
the
following on Google:

"os x" "white on black"

you'll find the answer very, very quickly - and you wouldn't have had to wait
until someone
posted a reply here, so you would be better off and this forum would retain its
focus
(helpful people tend to leave a group that loses focus).

Can you assign a new folder within the Documents folder?

The setup many people prefer is what you have now, a
small transfer folder, into which you can drag to
move, or option-drag to copy, any documents you want
to have on your SheepShaver volume. Or, you could
make a new folder at the same level as your Documents
folder, move everything from Documents into it, trash
the empty Documents folder, rename the new folder
"Documents" and attach the SS unix volume to that.
That's more convenient access to all your documents,
but it makes the unix volume much larger.

In any case, make a folder within whatever you choose
as the transfer/unix folder, name it something like
SS Print/PDF folder, and attach the folder action
script to it. You're done.

Dear Listers,

I am using WordPerfect 3.5e under Mac OS 9.2.2 for my business mail.
There is an issue with the display of fonts when I am using the 200%
zoom. The space, which separates the words in a sentence, appears to
be visually incorrect. For example, Iamusing instead of I am using.
When I zoom back to 100%, everything looks correct again. This is
tiresome, because sometimes I discover the problem only in the
printed version. I assumed that the problem was due to ATM, so I
disabled it. The problem is still there, though. The graphic adapter
is a Formac 32 MB card. Other applications are displayed correctly. I
am lost!

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I am another Newbie struggling with a conversion problem. I have
read the Conversion Guide (which seems to me to be dealing with folks
who wish to convert back and forth from WP DOS to WPMac) and I have
looked through the Messages files as best I could. My situation is
that I use only Microsoft Word on my PowerBook G4 (V. 10.3.9).
Although retired, I have recently accepted a contract with a
government agency. This outfit uses only WordPerfect and expects me to
provide my report in WP. Thus, my question is, "Is there available
here any translators that will enable me to convert back and forth
from WP to Word?" My Word program is Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, V.
11.3; I do not know the version of WP used by the government.
Currently we are communicating via e-mail & pdf files. I sincerely
appreciate the effort of whoever takes the trouble to reply to this
question that has, no doubt, been posted many times. Dave

I feel your pain. This is a problem with the magnification feature
of WP over which I have gritted my teeth for a number of years.
Unfortunately, I have not been able to come up with a perfect
solution. I think that the problem results from the workings of the
visual-rendering engine within WP. I do not believe it is a hardware
issue. I have experienced it on several different Macs, including
the one that I am using to write this message. This computer is a
dual 2.7-GHz G5 with an ATI Radeon 9650 video card that has 256 MB of
VRAM.

One thing that you can try is to compose your documents in a larger
font size (e.g., 14 point type), and to do so using 100%
magnification. When you have finished writing the draft, Select All,
and change the font size to a more appropriate value, e.g., 12 point
type. As necessary, adjust the formatting of the document so that
you get page breaks at appropriate placed. Then save the document,
and print it.

I know that the work-around that I suggest above is a bit of a pain,
but it does work to a large degree, at least for me. That said, I
would welcome a "real" solution to this problem. I find it more and
more of an issue as I get older. I am using a pair of 20-inch Apple
Cinema displays at their native resolution (1680 x 1050), and at 100%
magnification, 12-point Times Roman is getting harder and harder to
read.

Changing the screen resolution to something lower, e.g., 1024 x 768
will enlarge the visual appearance of the text, but it is not an
ideal solution if you are using an Liquid-Crystal Display because the
sharpness of the display suffers when you are not running it at its
native resolution, due to the effects of interpolation. For similar
reasons, I do not find the Zoom feature within the OS (command/alt/=
and command/alt/-, see the Universal Access pane in System
Preferences if you are running OS X and Classic) to be a good
solution.

You can use NeoOffice <http://www.neooffice.com> to convert documents
between Word and WP, or MacLinkPlus
