Before you drop a file on a droplet, use the Open command in WPMac
and navigate to that file's location. Do you see the file name in the list
of openable files in that location? If not, cancel the dialog, go back to
the Finder, and drop the file on the droplet. Then go to WPMac's Open
dialog again. The file name should now be visible, or show as
openable.

I have a lot of old WordPerfect 1.0 files which are
password-protected, but I can't open them with any application in OS
X. I still have the original application file(s), but how do I access
the documents themselves?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hello,

I need some help with the WPMac 3.5e download.

I have a PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11. It's three
years old now, but it was my first Mac, and thus I don't
have a long history with Mac and know nothing about the
"classic" environment. I've tried trolling this site for
help but it seems to be geared toward very knowledgeable
Mac users and programmers.

I'm an editor with a client that uses WP 12 for Windows,
which I run on a PC at home. However, I will be traveling
and working for several months with my PowerBook, though,
and hope to continue working for this client while
traveling. I thought I'd try the WPMac download to see if
it read their WPD files. (Or I'll have to take two laptops,
once Mac and one Windows ... not really an option, and I
can't afford yet the new Intel-based Macs.)

I followed the instructions on the WPDOS site
(http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/macintosh.html) -- I
downloaded and installed WP3.5e from the System 7 site, as
well as the updater.

I then came to this site to download the conversions.

However, I must have screwed up somewhere, because I can't
get it to work. When I try to open "Corel WordPerfect" from
the Applications file, I get the "WordPerfect and Language
Resource must be together in the same location" message. I
can open the "WordPerfect 3.5 Enhanced" version, but I am
unable to open files -- I only see folders.

I've also tried opening WPD files with no luck -- "Corel
WordPerfect" is not an option. When I try to open a WPD
file, I tried a trick I read about here: highlight the
file, hit command+I, and then tell it to open in WPD from
the "other" list -- but "Corel WordPerfect" is not an
option, and in "Corel WordPerfect Enhanced," WordPerfect is
not highlighted as an option.

Also, when I try to install the "outlining fix," I get the
same error message, "WordPerfect and Language Resource must
be together in the same location."

Perhaps some of the confusion is that there is WP by itself
in my App folder, and also the "Enhanced" version in my App
folder, with WP in there too. I assume that I should use
the WP in the "enhanced" version.

Please help! I'd be happy to call someone if they could
talk me through it. I know that's asking a lot.

Also, does anyone know about the compatibility of this 3.5e
version with later versions of WP, like WP12? Can I read
WP12 files in this WPMac 3.5e version?

If not, does anyone have a suggestion on how I can read
WP12 files on my OS X 10.4.11?

c

Boy! If you had that, go to after a CD with WP 3.5e. Mine came with my
475 Performa and is working OK in 10.4.11 Classic!

There's a range of expertise among the folks here, but we're happy
to help WP users at any level.

Actually, these days the simplest way to get WP Mac going is to
download the 243mb file from the Links section here, in the
SheepShaver-Basilik folder. It's named "SheepShaver-WordPerfect
Install 1.1" (although I know you're not on Leopard or Intel).

Archive that download for when you are, and then open the
SheepShaver volume disk image. Copy the "WordPerfect ƒ" from
there to your Applications-Classic folder. It already has the OS
8/9/Classic updater and the outlining fix done, and has an
up-to-date Conversions folder.

Let us know when that's up and running, and we'll take it from there.

These macros enhance WP's automatic correction feature. I find them
to be a real timesaver.

QuickCorrect Entry -- correct a mistyped word and add that word
to WP's QuickCorrect list all at once, and with a minimum of keystrokes.

Letterswitch -- press a key (I use F2) to switch the last two letters
typed. It makse typign easire.

QuickCorrect Toggle -- turn QuickCorrect on and off easily.

Free in the Files section here, as QuickCorrect 1.2.4.sit.

1. This is a website in Canada that offers to convert WordPerfect 1.0 files:
http://www.mailboxplus.bc.ca/fileconvert.htm

2. Try NeoOffice. Go to www.neooffice.org and download it. It says it will open
a WordPerfect for Mac 1.0 file.

The program is donation ware. Give it a try.

Assuming I get WP Mac up and functioning, how well will it work with
documents created with WP12, and will it be able to export them well enough?

Thanks again.

Yeah, MacLink Plus was my first thought, too. I have version 16 and it
only works down to version 2.x of WordPerfect for Mac.

The real problem here is the password protection on those old 1.0
files. Even if Neooffice can read a WordPerfect 1.0 file, as I suggested
in an earlier post, I don't know if it can open a password protected
WordPerfect 1.0 file.

As I don't have a WordPerfect 1.0 file, I don't know if WordPerfect
3.5e would open it, either.

To make a Super Wild Guess here, I would say that the original
poster should look into Basilisk ][ or vMac, the 68000 emulators for
OS X, as a possible solution. Set up a 68000 emulator and run
WordPerfect 1.0 in that emulated environment.

Whether the files could be viewed, then copied and pasted into an
OS X word processor, I DO NOT KNOW.

The original poster's next step should be to head for the LInks
section of this group and check out the Basilisk links.

I'm going to defer to John Rethorst for the definitive answer on
this, but if I recall, the file format for WP12 is compatible with
the "WordPerfect 6,7,8" that's built into the Mac version of
WordPerfect. If that's the case, you should be able to import and
export successfully. I know that some years ago I moved files back
and forth between WPMac 3.5e and WP Windows 8 and it always worked
very well.

I believe that John has created a "droplet"--a little application on
which you can drop batches of files to convert them for the Mac
version. I'm sure he'll confirm the file compatibility question and
tell you about the droplets--I haven't actually tried them myself.

I'm no expert, although there are a couple on this list, but I think that
you're right: WP Win 12 has the same file format as WP Win 8, and its
files are easily openable by WP Mac.

Subject: Tables, bullets lost when opening in WP?
mptreb
Send Email Send Email

I'm trying to open on my mac a document created in whatever the
current version is of WP for Windows. Tables disappear; a bulleted
list is consistently rendered as plain text paragraphs.

I'm running OSX 10.4; so I have tried a few different things.

OpenOffice deletes the tables and their contents -- I had no idea
there was even anything missing; bullets open as text.

AbiWord crashes when I try to open the document.

WP3.5, installed as suggested here, opens the document, and converts
the tables into text. Bullets, too, appear as plain text. This is
the best I've done so far -- at least it pulls the data out of the WP
file, and I can then reformat it.

Is there something else I should try?

Thanks for your help,
Matt

I've just posted WordPerfect 1.0.5, to the Temporary Items folder in
the Files folder here. It runs under Classic, although the menus are a
little flaky, and runs fine in SheepShaver.

Assuming you have the passwords, this will open the files.

First, trash version 0.2 of this applet and empty the trash. Also, if
the WordPerfect application is on a mounted OSX volume, trash
that too. Then unzip 0.3. You may have to log out and back in

John,

I just stared to follow your instrcutions here. A quick question: as you
note, I do not have Leopard or Intel yet you suggest that I ³archive that
download for when you are, and then open the SheepShaver volume disk image.²
I have no plans to upgrade in the near future. Are you saying this download
only works with Intel or Leopard?

I know there's one in the Sheepshaver distribution -- that's how you
get printing done from within Sheepshaver. I don't know if there's one
elsewhere.

Matt Cannata at the uneasysilence.com board (SheepShaver article
postings) found a simple solution to this. I'm having the same problem
with the sound and intend to try this tonight:

Okay everybody! I've got sound. It was a stupid little tweak that gave
the sound. In the `Sound' area of the Control Panels, select Output and
then highlight Built-in. I had scanned through this all before, but I
just didn't click `Built-in' because I thought that since it was the
only option on that list it would be set as the default. But no, you
need to highlight it. Hopefully this will work with Graham's System 9
CD (iMac bundled). I ended up using a retail version of System 9.0.4
instead of using his bundled software.

Heh. Well, I just realized after trying this fix that of course it won't work,
because our problem is that the Sound control panel won't even open,
and this fix involves making changes to the settings INSIDE the control
panel. Ah well, see if I can find another fix that doesn't involve a reinstall.

Here are some other things we can try:

1. Older version of Sound control panel (OS 8.5)
2. Remove certain extensions
3. or Use a non-hardware specific ROM (Graham's is specifically for the iMac)

Downloading the OS 9.0.4 update from Apple's website and installing
it overtop the current OS while in SheepShaver fixes part of the problem.
It gives you a working copy of the Sound Control Panel, but there is
no "built-in" device listed for the sound output, so there is still no
sound. But at least you can get into the control panel now.

I'm totally mental when it comes to computers. I had an HP laptop,
but then I purchased a MacBook, and the nice people at Mac
transferred the documents from my HP to my MacBook.

However, I cannot view some of the documents because they were
saved as .wpd. I get an error message that says, "There is no
default application specified to open the document, "New
WordPerfect 10 Document (4).wpd". Can anyone suggest the
easiest way I could view the documents via iWork '08?

Thought you all might be interested in this alternative
method of printing, which is a bit more direct (at least
for me) than the SheepShaver Print folder and its
associated script. I'm running WP and SS (OS9.0) under OS X
10.5.5 on a 2.1 Ghz Core Duo MacBook. Here at home, in my
dual-platform household, we also have a desktop PC running
Windows Vista, a Sony VAIO laptop running WIndows XP, and a
rather elderly IBM ThinkPad, also running XP. There are two
available printers: an HP OfficeJet 6310 multi function
inkjet and a Brother HL-5170DNLT laser, both physically
connected to the router. The MacBook and the other two
laptops connect wirelessly (MacBook obviously via AirPort),
and the desktop has a wired connection. This method works
beautifully for the Brother, but not for the HP, presumably
because the HP is not PostScript compatible.

1. Before you start, make sure that you have AdobePS (which
is included in John's SheepShaver distribution).
2. See if you can find a PPD for your printer. In my case, there
was actually a Classic PPD installer available for download
from brother.com. Otherwise, you should be able to use the
Generic PPD that is bundled with AdobePS.
3. With SheepShaver NOT running, start SheepShaverPrefs,
go to the Miscellaneous tab, and set the Ethernet interface to
slirp. This causes SheepShaver to be able to share your OSX
network connection.
4. Quit SheepShaverPrefs and start SheepShaver.
5. In SheepShaver, make the following settings in the TCP/IP
control panel, which I discovered after a lot of internet searching
for "sheepshaver print":
      a. Connect via: Ethernet
      b. Configure: Using DHCP server
      c. DHCP client ID: (leave blank)
      d. IP address: 10.0.2.15
      e. Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
      f. Router address: 10.0.2.3
      g. Name server addr: 10.0.2.3
(For some reason the TCP/IP control panel didn't function for me
in the OS that is bundled with John's SS distribution, but it worked
just fine with OS9.)
6. Close the control panel and start AdobePS. Make the following choices:
      a. With:AdobePS
      b. Create Desktop... Printer(LPR)
(I could not get an AppleTalk printer to work.)
      c. Continue
      d. Choose the appropriate PPD file for your printer, or use Generic.
      e. Under LPR Printer selection, press Change.
      f. Printer address: your printer's IP address on your network
      g. Queue: binps (worked for me, anyway)
7. Click Verify
8. Click Create...
9. Give the printer a name and click OK.
Then, in WP, you can do page setup to select the printer as usual.
HTH,
Justin

Dear Sparklett:

Here are my answers to your question: "What can read these
WordPerfect 10 files right NOW!"

1. Abiword. Go to www.abisource.com, download Abiword
2.4.5, and install it. It's only 9 megabytes in size, so
you can download it quickly. I tested it on a .WPD 11 file
with a table in it, so it does work. It's free.

You can save the wordperfect documents in Microsoft word
(.doc) or Rich Text Format. (.rtf) and import them into
Pages.

2. MacLink Plus. This will convert back and forth between a
WIDE variety of formats. You can order it directly from
www.dataviz.com. Order it, download it, and install it with
the serial codes you get upon purchase.

WordPerfect is one of the supported formats, both
Wordperfect for Windows and WordPerfect for Mac.

3. Once you get the initial WordPerfect problem solved,
come back here and learn how to install WordPerfect for Mac
3.5e on a MacBook using Sheepshaver. John Rethorst, our
esteemed leader, has done a fantastic job in keeping Wp for
Mac a viable program.

Translate them to WP Mac format with MacLink Plus
http://www.dataviz.com

or view them with NeoOffice
