Complete package with everything needed to run WordPerfect on Intel Macintoshes
and on OS 10.5. New in this version:

- New Spotlight importer and QuickLook Generator (v. 3.2)

- Open WP Files 1.0.3

- Link to WPLO Converter to/from MS Word files

All of these enhancements are available separately in the Files and/or Links
sections here. All of these are highly recommended but, if you have them
already, there's no need to download this package.

Free, in the Links section, in the SheepShaver and Basilisk folder.

Do any of these emulators work on a PPC Mac, or only with Intel Macs? I mean
programs like "Sheepshaver" and "DOSBox". I still run OSX Tiger on a G4 (so I
can still reboot into OS9 whenever I want to, or run WP under Classic).

Hi Mark,

I havenʻt tried SheepShaver on my Tiger PPC G4 (I just ran WP in
Classic). IIRC DOSBox ran Ok and I was able to use DataPerfect 2.x and
WP 5.x. There were limitations (couldnʻt print using the official
DOSBox release 0.72. I found a 0.71rcl release that allowed some
printing). Iʻve since migrated to my Intel Mini and Leopard. I donʻt
know which DOSBox Eric is using on his build. I should point out I was
not using the package referenced below, rather the DOSBox package from
the developers. Your question seems generic regarding this emulator.

The DOSBox system runs under any Mac using 10.4 or later, Intel or PowerPC. To
answer a question is another thread, it uses a custom build of DOSBox based on
the current experimental code (which is a revised version of 0.74). The page
linked below has further information.

It turns out that the version I posted on May 9th was unable to convert DOC,
RTF, DOCX, etc., files TO WordPerfect format, although it could convert from WP
format to other formats. I've now fixed that: it again converts both FROM and TO
WPMac format. Same download link:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/271144/WPLOConverter.zip

Otherwise, it's as described below.

WP files. These files can now be converted into RTF, DOC, PDF, or OTD formats
(OTD is the native format of OpenOffice.org and LibreOffice).

The original file is not altered in any way.

I have just installed SheepShaver WordPerfect 1.2.6. Initially I believe I had
OSX>SS and SS>OSX icons on the OS9 desktop, but now they are gone. I am also
getting an "out of memory" message. I suspect that tis is because I have added
an additional OS9 application (MacFlow) and want to add yet another (Reunion).
Guidance would be appreciated.

None of my installers put those Icons on the desktop. I don't know what to
suggest. Those folders don't need to be especially accessible to the user IAC.

An application per se wouldn't do that, although the number of applications you
can run at one time will be limited by memory.

The 1.2.6 installer resets SheepShaver's prefs (maybe it shouldn't -- I'll look
at that). Meanwhile, open the SheepShaverPrefs utility in the SheepShaver folder
and increase the memory allocation.

One of the annoying things about existing versions of my WPMacPPC Appliance (a
system that runs WPMac under SheepShaver running system 7.5.5 - the system runs
on Intel Macs but emulates an old PowerPC Mac) was this: when it started up,
WPMac was NOT the foreground application. The foreground application was an
AppleScript that ran in SheepShaver during startup.

I've now fixed the AppleScript so that WordPerfect is the foreground application
when SheepShaver starts up. It still (deliberately) doesn't open with a blank
document, because you may want to open an existing one, but you can press Cmd-N
to create a new document.

If you already have the WPMacPPC Appliance, all you need to do is replace the
old version of the script with the new version, which is downloadable in this
ZIP file (which should be opened under OS X):

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/271144/RunOpenWPFilesAppleScript.zip

Unzip the ZIP file to find the ~Run Open WP Files script. Open the WPMacPPC
Appliance, and quit the existing ~Run Open WP Files script. Open the WPMacPPC
disk on the desktop, open the Startup Items folder from the Alias in the window.
Replace the existing ~Run Open WP Files script with the new one. You might also
want to replace the backup copy of the script that you'll find to the right of
the Startup Items alias in the window. Restart the WPMacPPC Appliance.

You can also download an updated version of the full WPMacPPC Appliance from its
usual download link:

Subject: Macro question: resize new window automatically?

Here's a question for the macro gurus. I realized that I preferred to have the
current WP document fill the SheepShaver desktop, so I wrote this OnOpenDocument
macro, which works more or or less correctly on my setup (which uses the WP
status bar):

Move Window(FrontWindow;6;42)
Assign(Var01;ScreenSizeH)
Assign(Var01; Var01-12)
Assign(Var02;ScreenSizeV)
Assign(Var02;Var02-48)
Size Window(FrontWindow;Var01;Var02)

I know that WP uses a special "OnStartup" and "OnOpenDocument" macro. But there
doesn't seem to be an OnNewDocument macro, so I followed some hints in an old
WPMac news posting, and did this:

I created an empty file and attached the OnOpenDocument macro to it. I saved it
under the name New Document Template in the Templates folder. Now, when I create
a new document, the OnOpenDocument macro runs and expands the window to fill the
SheepShaver desktop.

But I've got one question. Is there a way to remove the OnOpenDocument macro
from the newly created file? I don't want or need it in the document once the
document has been created. I can't find a macro that will remove a macro. I'll
be grateful for any advice.

There's no OnNewDocument macro, and you can't remove a macro with a macro. But
we can do just as well with NewDocumentFlag, which indicates that a document is
new -- has never been saved. So:

; part of OnOpenDocument macro

if (NewDocumentFlag)
; do stuff
End If

This should be in the OnOpenDocument macro in the Library.

Note that a New Document Template must exist in the Templates folder in the
WordPerfect folder for this to work, but the template need not (and shouldn't)
have any macros in it -- otherwise that macro will exist in every document you
create.

Exactly what I was looking for (and didn't know). Thanks. It occurred to me also
that I wanted to write a macro that would close any empty document when I opened
an existing one - but before I worked too hard on it, I found exactly that in
your Scripting Guide. Thank you for that too!

(Suggestion: Could you post a PDF version of your Scripting Guide so that it can
be read directly on Leopard and later systems?)

This is a PDF version of the Scripting Guide. It needs revision, especially to
the Applescript chapters, but is serviceable, and teaches you everything you
need to know to write powerful WP macros and Applescripts. (WordPerfect's macro
manual, also downloadable here, is less of a tutorial than a reference.)

We seem to have a recent bug that prevents binding width from being set in Page
Setup. Also known as gutter margins, this feature lets you add e.g. a half-inch
to the left side of odd-numbered pages and the right side of even-numbered
pages.

I've just posted a template that has this .5 inch space set. Put it in your
Templates folder, and either start from it for a document you will have bound,
or select all, copy and paste into a new doc made from the template. Note that
this won't transfer styles, macros and other resources in the document; you'll
need to move those using the Librarian.

In the Files section here, as Binding Width template.sit.

I had a document with binding width set (as it happens, the Scripting Guide).

Somewhere in the 3.5 - 3.5.4 version progression, a bug crept in such that
figure box captions, which normally you can set inside or outside the box, could
only be set in the box. I like them outside the box and, until the bug was
fixed, would copy a figure with a caption from an existing document and paste it
into a new document. I'd then replace the contents of the box and the caption
with new data, and the setting would stick.

I thought that might work here, and it did. But after posting it, I noticed some
weirdness with the Laserwriter 8 driver -- side margins were funny. I switched
to the Adobe PDF driver, and that was fine. So I need to look more at getting
this template to work well with the Laserwriter driver.

Alternatively, it's a System problem, not a WP problem - WP sends an

I see the same results under 7.3, 7.5.5, 8.6, 9.0.4, and 9.2.1 on various
SheepShaver and Basilisk setups and on two real Macs. Strange.

This is somewhat off topic, but I know that it is important to a lot
of people...

A security update is now available from Apple to fix the MacDefender
malware issue:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4657

It will only work if you are updated to the latest version of Mac OS
X, which is OS X 10.6.7.

Just updated.

Also x.6.7 has several Bad fonts That affect Adobe Acrobat, MS Office
and other products.

Its fixed with this:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1377

It seems that X.6.7 prefers Opentype (based on TrueType) and Truetype.
Doesn't like Postscript at all.

It took less than 8 hours for a new Mac Defender variant to appear
that can bypass Apple's
security system:
bypassed-within-hours-by-malware-authors-update/3396>

or

or

As before, it is important to make sure that you have "Open safe
files after downloading" UNchecked in Safari's preferences.
Even better, if you routinely use a non-administrator account on your
Mac, MacDefender can't even attempt to install itself. (If you need
to know how to move to a non-administrator account, let me know and I
will post the steps.)

ClamXAV has updated virus definitions for MacDefender and its variants. This
freeware antivirus program can be set to quarantine infected files, a procedure
that Apple has apparently copied for Snow Leopard (ClamXAV runs on Tiger and
later). See

http://www.clamxav.com/

And, as posted, it's a very good idea to uncheck Safari's Open Safe Files After
Downloading preference.

Also locate the utility called Safe Download Version which checks which
version of the malware updater Apple has installed. Currently on version
4 since all the ruckus started.

I went to the site,

http://www.clamxav.com/

and noted that ClamXav was updated 24th March 2011 to version 2.1.1. Is
that correct, and does that protect against this NEW problem? It does not
eve mention this problem. Am i at the right place?

I had a document of 337 pages of addresses. I wanted to make a new document with
every address that had a given word in it. Applescript can do this sort of word
processing. It was in part made for it.

So I wrote a nine-line script. That's not enough lines for anyone, even me, to
make much of a mistake in a way that would slow things down. I started it
running. After a while, I realized it was going to be slow, so I thought I'd do
the same thing with a WP macro.

While the Applescript _was still running_, I wrote the macro, debugged it, and
ran it. I got the results, looked through them, saw that everything was cool --
and the Applescript ran for at least another five minutes, natively on OS
10.4.11.
