Includes the latest version of SheepShaver, plus maintenance scripts. If you
have SS-WP Install 1.3, you could d/l this version to see if it works better for
you, or just download SS itself at

http://www.xs4all.nl/~ronaldpr/sheepshaverforum/SheepShaver_UB_20101106.zip

and replace the program file you have now with this one.

Free in the Links section here, in the SheepShaver and Basilisk folder, as

SheepShaver-WordPerfect Install 1.3.1.

Not entirely on-topic but of interest to many members. This New York Times
article explains the many security updates in the Lion OS (10.7), and then
notes:

> With the security threats so limited, it isn't vital to have these features
right now, Mr. Dai Zovi says. "There are always a few rough edges in an initial
release, and there might be some incompatibilities with various applications,"
he says. "These kinks are usually worked out by the .1 or .2 releases, and that
would be a better time for most users to upgrade."

Add to this the thoughts of Don Williams, who writes Overture, a great music
notation program, in the forum at http://geniesoft.com/forum/:

> From what I have read, DO NOT UPGRADE TO LION. Even Logic Express 9.1.4 the
latest version does not work. Shame on Apple. I'm lucky Overture and Score
writer work.

FWIW, and a WTTW (word to the wise-- is that a legit web abbreviation?)

This is the manual for WP's enhanced outlining module, added as macros in
version 3.5 and incorporated into the program in 3.5e. Released here in PDF
format for ease of use in OSX systems, and still available as a reader document
for OS 9.

I hope this may encourage more WP users who are less familiar with outlining to
try the enhanced module. There's no other single step I can think of that can
improve anyone's writing as fast as outlining.

John: Wow. That's all kind of over-my-head. I'm a writer and found one of my old
diskettes from my Mac Plus days. Trouble is, I can't open it on my old Mac that
was in the addict (not the right software. I have been told my WE FIX MACS, in
Santa Clara, who is going out of business that the Mac Plus used "Word Perfect"
(perhaps, "Corel"). So, I trying to find where I could purchase one as the info
on the old diskette is valuable to me.
Thanks, AG Potts.

John, I just figured this out, three years later, thanks to Reveal Codes.

The culprit that made page numbering revert to 1 was this code:

Pg#.1, Arabic

Preceding it was this code, which may or may not have contributed to the
"corruption" of the document:

Line #: Off

Once I deleted both codes, page numbering was fixed.

I first discovered the same problem in another, later document, and am very
happy to have thought, finally, of going to Reveal Codes. These rogue codes
crept in when I pasted something into the document from the internet or, in the
2008 case, from TextEdit. (It was April Fool's Day, too....) But go to opt-F2
and the problem is easily solved. Just more testimony to the robustness of WP.

If you had a Macintosh Plus in 1986, you could have used any of a half-dozen
different word processors. If you don't remember which program you used, then
you might consider taking the disk to a local university's computer lab, and
hiring a student to help you.

...watching this thread... seems even to get started there are some unknowns:

1. file type (affix)
2. size
3. media it's on (a floppy?)
4. media type you need it converted to and file type

So what is the affix of the file?

The first Word Processing program I remember for the MacPlus was Worksâ„¢...
which was a re-write of AppleWorksGS (the first actual multi purpose program
which had a Word Processor, Database. Spread Sheet, Art and Communications all
semi-integrated)... until Jobs killed the AppleIIGS.

Worksâ„¢ for Mac was similar.

Since I do forensic work... I have a number of translators.. I'm sure others do
too (like MacLinkPlus Deluxe which is no longer sold).

But perhaps if you listed the file type and the size, etc., one of us could
translate it into something you can use.

So it's a diskette?

MacPlus's came with built in 3.5 floppy drives. But there were 5.25 floppy
drives available.

Cool! Much better than my advice to extract text and start over.

This problem of rogue codes is one disadvantage of inline formatting codes
compared to other programs' paragraph-specific formatting.

But inline codes work better overall, a point tacitly acknowledged by Microsoft
when they gave Word 2007/2008 an XML-based file format.

Rogue codes' appearance when subsequent formatting separates the code from the
text it's meant to apply to is hard to avoid without paying careful attention to
the codes window while formatting text, which is time-consuming.

Locating the code would be a matter of (in the case of page numbering), turning
numbering on at the top of the document, then going forward page by page in
Print Preview until the discrepancy appears, then looking at that page in the
Codes window.

Anyone have any other thoughts?

Why the line numbering code should affect page numbering in the first place is
another question.

IAC when I paste text from any source into WP, unless I specifically want
formatting, I choose the Paste Special... > Text command. I've assigned a
keystroke (cmd-shift-V) to Paste Text, rather than use the two-step menu access.

Tom, thanks for bringing this up.

Our own Ed Mendelson has published "The Human Face of Type" in the New York
Review of Books:

http://www.nybooks.com/blogs/nyrblog/2011/aug/04/human-face-of-type/

exploring the expressive value of different fonts, or typefaces. A significant
consideration in word processing is its result, the appearance of text on the
page or screen, and the choice of what font to use is a good part of that.

I discuss this in "Teach Yourself WordPerfect", chapter 15 (text available here
in message 204), and Adobe's Type Primer.pdf is in the Files section.

So -- members, what's your favorite font? Why do you like it? Are there fonts
you avoid at all cost? Does Helvetica deserve its widespread disparagement? I
actually like it, being a minimalist of sorts. For other opinions, see the NY
Museum of Modern Art's exhibition "50 Years of Helvetica" at

http://www.moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/38

and the BBC's thoughts at

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/6638423.stm

What other elements of page design do you like? Ragged or justified at the right
margin? Optimum column width? These choices make your text more or less inviting
to read.

Ed, nice article.

Either or both?

BTW I haven't explored it, but have heard there's a way to use OSX fonts in SS.
It might be that Adobe Type Manager (which comes with my SS-WP install) does
this, at least for some types of font files. Looking in the Fonts folders of the
System and Library folders of my antiquated OSX 10.4.11, most fonts have the
.otf or .ttf extensions; some have no extensions, and some have a .dfont
extension. dfonts might not work in SheepShaver.

I've been on a quest for the perfect font for about as long as I've been using
fonts. It never ends. For awhile I used Helvetica a lot, and while I think it's
still excellent for titles and headings, (and I think the film about it is
intriguing), it's not all that readable for long streams of text. I did my
dissertation in it, and I see now that it doesn't look all that good on the
printed page. I think the serifs are needed.

A nice alternative for text that I used when I converted the diss to a book
manuscript (also in WordPerfect) is Hoefler Text Regular, and one of its
advantages, besides its overall good look, is the fact that italics show up very
nicely--much more distinctively than italics in Helvetica. I think Hoefler was
one of the additional font families that came with WordPerfect. Garamond is also
a nice font, as are Bookman and Baskerville.

I'm quirky about fonts. I tend to like to use a font that is readable, but
distinctive. By "distinctive" I mean that I really avoid anything that looks
even remotely like Times New Roman because of my (completely irrational, I know)
aversion to Microsoft and the way that MS made it the default font for Windows
and Word (though the newer versions use a different font). So that rules out for
me some good old fonts such as Palatino.

An added wrinkle for me is that I've been trying to use a font that is fairly
universal, across platforms. I teach (college English) online as well as in the
classroom, and a lot of fonts that I might use will be lost due to font
substitutions, and the document you've worked hard to design comes out looking
completely different on another computer. So I usually try to use one of the
so-called "internet fonts" that--if I understand how these things work (I'm
happy to be enlightened by someone on the list)--are more universal. For awhile
I've been using Trebuchet MS, which doesn't look bad, is fairly readable, and is
an internet font. It's not a favorite, but it looks a little different and isn't
too zany.

This is an interesting thread!

I started with Palatino when I first used a Mac in the 1990s. In SS, it
is TNR for a serif and Helvetica for san serif. Boring, but seen the
same on other peple's machines when shared.

As for OS X, I use Trebuchet MS and Verdana for the san serif and TNR or
Cambria for the serif. Boring, but transferable

However, I have over 400 fonts sitting in the fonts folder, most of
which never see the light of day, but which I use for stuff I am
printing out, usually in photographic work.

Subject: [ANN] wp2latex, a utility for converting WordPerfect to LaTeX
drderbes
Send Email Send Email

Some weeks ago, in the [OS X TeX] listserv, a poster mentioned a utility
"wp2latex" which could convert WordPerfect files to LaTeX. I am quite interested
in this as I have about twenty years of Mac WP files (most with a lot of
equations) I have been slowly converting by hand to LaTeX. (Though Mac
WordPerfect is no longer officially supported by Corel, a large group of folks
have found ways to keep it going very successfully.) The poster provided a link
to the developer, Jaroslav Fojtik. I got in touch with Jaroslav. He had
executables for many operating systems, but not yet for Mac OS X. He made the
source code available on his web site. Jaroslav gave me a lot of advice for
compiling his source into a Mac OS X executable, but I wasn't able to get it
done. I posted a request to [OS X Tex] for help in compiling the source, and
Peter Dyballa very kindly volunteered.

Peter and Jaroslav have had a lot of good communication (which I, cc'd on, could
not remotely follow) and have now succeeded in making executables for both 32
and 64 bit Mac OS X, the former for older Macs, and the latter for more recent
models. I've tried both (under Snow Leopard 10.6.8, but not yet under Lion) and
they both work very well.

I'm posting this to both [OS X TeX] and [wordperfectmac@yahoogroups.com] in the
hopes that both groups will find the utility worthwhile. It works on, I believe,
all forms of WordPerfect text files, whether Mac, DOS, Windows, Linux or
whatever. The executables are available at Jaroslav's web site,
http://www.penguin.cz/~fojtik/wp2latex/wp2latex.htm and will be shortly at CTAN.

My thanks to these generous wizards for their time, their remarkable skills and
their efforts!

David,

This is very interesting. I downloaded version 3.55b from the page you linked to
- and I can't find any OS X executables inside it. I see Linux and DOS
executables, but not OS X. Probably I'm simply looking in the wrong place. Or
are we supposed to build it from source?

Thanks for any information!

Aha. Well, I believe they will be there shortly.

You will not have to build from source, courtesy of Jaroslav and Peter. I'll
email 'em to John.

Two small (well, I think small) things. First, they need to be expanded (you can
use The Unarchiver, which is free.) After expansion, you will need to open up a
Terminal window and issue the command "chmod 755 wp2latex" because otherwise the
expanded file will not be seen as a program (the Finder thinks it's just a
document at first.) Second, the program is a command line thing; you double
click on it, and it opens a Terminal window and asks you for the name of the
file.

After writing my message, I built from source - successfully, though it told me
that the resulting executable had no png or jpeg support (I don't know if that
matters in the real world). And it did convert a WordPerfect file to a .TEX
file, though I don't have a TeX viewer and so can't guess at how well it did.

Now, at the risk of asking more than I should be asking can you recommend a TeX
viewer for OS X that will not involve a great deal of configuring and
installing, etc? What I'm looking for is the simplest (and preferably
scriptable) solution for converting the TeX output to RTF or PDF. Thanks!

What I'm trying to do (ultimately) is build another user-friendly way to view WP
files and convert them to other formats. I've already built a couple of these
using open-source software (details at http://wpdos.org) and would be interested
in making another.

A third-party program called WordPerfect Viewer has been available for some time
at the App Store for OS X:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/wordperfect-viewer/id454094791?mt=12

It costs $9.99. Has anyone tried it? Corel bought the rights to the iPhone
version from the original vendor and sells a similar app for the iPhone, which I
also haven't tried.

There are several on-line LaTeX to PDF converters (and most of them are free.)
Google will find them for you. Here are a few:

http://latex.informatik.uni-halle.de/latex-online/latex.php
http://texblog.net/latex-link-archive/online-compiler/

(This last seems to have quite a few links.)

So what I think you could do is this. Use the wp2latex program to turn wp docs
into LaTeX source, use the free online things (paste the output of the wp2latex
program in), generate your PDF, and presto.

Let us know how it works!

Alternatively you could install a full Mac OS X LaTeX environment. Warning: This
is very large, on the order of 1 GB. It's free, but it costs a lot of disk
space.
