You need to either install a Virtual Machine with Windows (Parallels or VMWare
Fusion, etc.), Wine, or DOSBox if you want to run WordPerfect for Windows.

You need to ask here and work with this group if you want to install and run
WordPerfect for Mac on your Mac.

As this is a WordPerfect forum, it is likely that we won't have a lot to say
about your installation of Office for Mac, which will allow you to word process
in Word. Yes, a lot of us own it and use it when we have to, as much of the
business world uses Word. But we like WordPerfect, thus the WordPerfect forum.

And finally, to answer the question you have not asked: no, Microsoft Word for
Mac will not translate your historical Windows WordPerfect documents. There are
other tools that will, however.

WordPerfect for Windows will not run under DOSBox - only under VMware,
Parallels, or (though I don't recommend it) Wine.

I use WordPerfect for Windows X4 under VMware Fusion on a current Mac. If you
really need to use WordPerfect for Windows for your work, however, you're
probably better off with a Windows computer, not a Mac.

Dear All ~

Again, many many thanks for all of your help and suggestions. Let me back up a
bit and explain:

a) I'm tech-illiterate. Y'all talk in DOXBox and Wine and my eyes glaze over
as if I drank an entire box of juicy-juice.
b) I cut my proverbial teeth on an early 80s MAC but was forced into PC world
against my will.
c) I've used WordPerfect for as long as I can remember and DESPISE MSword.
(Yes, in CAPS.)
d) My dearly beloved, on a decades-late epiphany, converted himself and the
family to MAC. My new MBP was a Christmas gift. I was looking to upgrade but
facilated because the main program I use is ~ you guessed it ~ WP. Because
dearly beloved uses MSword for work he purchased the utility, which is now also
installed on my system. I can't get MSword to do what I want with conversions
of old files (or anything), no matter what I try and its driving me bonkers.
e) I like the MBP. I really do. But I can't use MSWord and MACPages just
doesn't cut it; it doesn't compare to WP.
f) Because my files are WP I am still using my old computer for all of my
document creation, which is frustrating.
g) I did the SheepShaver installation and didn't like the format, plus it would
not intake my old files.
h) I'm willing to pay $$ for whatever works to get WP.

So: HELP!

It would appear I need to:

1) download a virtual machine, the most recommended of which is VMWare.
2) download Windows (how? where?)
3) download WP
4) install a program to translate historical WindowsWP docs into MacWP docs.

Did I miss anything?

many, many thanks,
~Laura

1. Buy VMware.

2. Buy a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium from www.microsoftstore.com.

3. Buy a copy of WordPerfect for Windows from www.corel.com.

You don't need to do 4.

Your steps 1 to 3 are not just download. They all cost something, though
from PC days you may have a (hopefully non-OEM) Windows licence and
installation discs for WP, even if both are a little out of date…
#1 is inexpensive, about $80 if no sale is on. Though I should correct you;
VMware Fusion, like Parallels, is not the virtual machine, it's the
software that creates and manages the VM. #4 is free if you're content to
have *readable* files; LibreOffice or NeoOffice, both free, do a good job
reading WP files. Easily found and downloaded thanks to friend Google.

Hope that helps a bit.

Cheers,

When I switched to the Mac I looked into various options for my Word Perfect
files. I initially decided to download Open Office, which is free. I have used
that to read and convert my word perfect files when they are needed and it has
been all I have needed to do. I never got to Plan B.

The newer branch of OpenOffice, called LibreOffice, has a more effective
WordPerfect import filter. You may not see the difference on most files, but the
LibreOffice version can handle more WP features..

OO (and LO) Writer is for the most part a perfectly capable word processor,
and is part of a more capable and integrated office suite than Corel
currently offers. It also has the particularly nice advantage of native
versions on multiple platforms [once the mark of WP]. But it has some rough
edges, and if one uses complex tables (that is, with multiple cell joins
and splits) it can be a huge pain; WP is much more stable and robust. So
the suitability can depend on one's needs.

Dear Pat ~

I own discs to WP8 but have been using WPx3 (pre-loaded onto my lenovo). I
assume WP8 will not read all of the elements of WPx3. I need to not only read
my WP files but have access to utilize them (edit, etc.) so LibreOffice and
NeOffice won't be sufficient, correct?

many thanks,

Any version of WordPerfect for DOS or Windows, starting with version 6, can read
files created by any other version of WordPerfect for DOS or Windows, starting
with version 6. That means that WP8 can read WP files created by WP X3 without
any trouble at all.

If you're asking about WordPerfect for Windows, you'll find a much larger group
of experts at the WordPerfect Universe forum here:

http://www.wpuniverse.com

This WPMac forum is mostly populated by experts in WordPerfect for the
Macintosh, which is very different from the versions that you have used.

I would actually prefer using Windows XP if you are using VMWare or
Parallels, so you avoid the problem of activating Windows. Also, you
might want to check ebay for more recent versions of WP. I purchased a
new, unopened copy of WP X4 for next to nothing, and I'm running it
under Parallels with no problems.

Windows XP requires activation in exactly the same way that Windows 7 does.
Perhaps you used a copy of XP that was "pre-activated." But a new copy of
Windows XP will require activation in exactly the same way that Windows 7
requires it. Just google "XP activation" if there's any question about this.

My apologies to Laura for adding confusion to this, and to the list
for adding to this somewhat off topic thread. Indeed, my copy of XP
was provided by my employer, and was apparently under some sort of
volume license so that it did not require activation. When I switched
to a new computer, I installed Windows 7 under Boot Camp and had to
activate it. Then when I added Parallels later, it broke the
activation, although a call to Microsoft got it going again. Don't
worry Laura, it's not really as hard as it might seem.

Did you ever ear about this “antivirus company”?

Now you have.

and according to the Russia-based antivirus company Dr. Web, over 600,000 Macs
have been been infected.

Which is a better option for running WordPefect on a Mac (i.e., fewer problems,
more capabilities, and more pleasing experience for running WordPerfect):

(1) running WP for Macintosh, by following instructions posted in the
wordperfectmac - WPMac Yahoo group "Getting started with WordPerfect Mac",

or

(2)getting a software such as Parallels to create a Windows version in the Mac,
and running a Windows version of WordPerfect such as Corel WordPerfect X5?

If option 1, can the WordPerfect software do everything option 2 can do?

Thank you.

It entirely depends on what you are used to.

WPMac is a very different program from WPWin, and hasn't been updated since
1998. The only people who should seriously consider using it are people who have
already used it for years.

If you are used to WPWin, then get VMware Fusion (preferably) or Parallels
Desktop and install Windows and WPWin.

Thank you very much, your advice was very helpful!
I have only used WPWin, thus I will not pursue use of WPMac.

One of the neat features of WP is the variety of column styles.
Does anyone know how to get the equivalent of parallel or extended
columns in NeoOffice or other "modern" word processors? While
NeoOffice is able to read WPMac documents, it doesn't handle parallel
or extended columns right. (I just tried it.)

Use a two-column table for two parallel columns; a three-column table for three,
etc.

It unfortunately does wreck things. Anyone have a private account with Westlaw
who could email me the URL in your browser after a WestLaw search?

Thanks,
John R.

Don't think that'll help you much, though; if you strip away everything but
"query=fnord" you get:

An error occurred when processing your request.

Please try again later or call 1-800-WESTLAW (1-800-937-8529).

It is unwieldy, but it may work. When I test it here, of course it redirects to
a sign-in page.

Could you (or anyone signed in to Westlaw) go to the Files section here, to the
folder at the top of the list named Temporary Items? It contains a small app
called Westlaw lookup test.app.zip. Run that -- it will ask you for a lookup
term, and then should go to Westlaw and look it up, if your computer is signed
in to Westlaw.

It would be great if two people could try this, to control for the possibility
that some of the URL is specific to one computer.

Thank you,
John R.
