Running OS 10.7 on a MacBook Pro. I have 400-500 Wordperfect documents and
would like to know if there is a way to index Wordperfect documents so Spotlight
can search the contents without having Wordperfect installed?

I would like to be able to search the contents and if I find a document I need
convert said document to Word using WPLO.

Download and install the WordPerfect Spotlight plug-in. It should be on this
group under files, as well as a QuickLook plug-in.

Hello all - quick question. I'm running WP 3.5e on Panther via Mac OS Classic.
A few months ago the drag-and-drop function stopped working. If I select a
block of text in a WP document and try to drag it somewhere, it vanishes. I can
restore the deleted text with the "undo" command, but I have no idea what causes
this or how to fix it. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone
recommend a solution other than reinstalling?
Thanks!

I had a similar problem, where drag-and-drop caused a crash. It disappeared,
maybe about the time I upgraded to Tiger, although I didn't make the connection.
IAC I haven't seen it in a long time, so I suspect it may be the OS or Panther's
version of Classic.

As a fix, would you consider upgrading to Tiger? Several original OS disks have
gone on eBay recently for $20-30 (be sure to get a universal disk, rather than
one for a specific machine). Aside from I think fixing the WP problem, Tiger has
some improvements -- and Spotlight alone makes the upgrade worthwhile,
especially if you d/l Gero's plug-in to index WP docs.

Hi:
I recently installed WPMacApp (for old Mac WordPerfect 3.5e documents).
However, when I open them, the text is garbled.
Any suggestions (other app. or whatever) as to how to unscramble or at least
view it that way?

Could the text have been mangled via some transition over the years, or attempts
to open these documents with Nisus?

Thank you!

Download the WP Viewer here:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/271144/WPViewer.zip

Drop one of the garbled files on it. If it displays in garbled form in the WP
Viewer, then the files are mangled - or perhaps they are no longer WP files, but
Nisus files or some other kind of files. If they are mangled, come back and
report.

If they do not display in mangled form, then something is wrong in the WPMacApp
WPMac setup.

In either case, please let us know the results.

You wrote the WP Converter. Did you mean the WP Viewer? In any case, having
written both of them, I'm a bit puzzled, because if these ARE encrypted
WordPerfect files they would not have displayed at all in WPMac in the WPMacApp,
not even in garbled form. So I suspect that the WP Converter or WP Viewer is
making a mistake about this if it is true that (1) the file displays in garbled
from in WPMac AND (2) one of these programs tells you have an encrypted file.

First, if you are using the WP Converter, please download the WP Viewer that I
linked to in a previous message, and try again. I really did mean that you
should use the WP Viewer, not the WP Converter. If you get an error message,
please tell us exactly what it is - the exact words.

Second, if these are in fact encrypted files, that means that you saved them
with password-protection because you wanted to keep their contents secret.
Presumably you would remember that if you did. If you don't remember saving them
with password-protection, then they probably are not encrypted WordPerfect
files. If they are NOT encrypted WordPerfect files AND WordPerfect won't open,
then it may be possible to find a program that will open them, but it would take
a lot of time and effort.

I am surprised no-one has written one. When the topic of encrypted
WP files came up here several years ago I took a look at the
encryption scheme by encrypting several simple files (e.g., all one
letter, or repeated alphabets) with simple passwords (one letter,
repeated letter, alphabetical string) and looking at the output it
looked like it was a fairly simply encryption scheme. I was too lazy
to work out the details, but it did look like it wouldn't be hard to
reverse-engineer.

This set of two macros lets you assign bookmarks among all open WP documents
with a keystroke and go to any one with another keystroke. Fast and simple aid
to navigation. Bookmarks stay in memory for the current session of WP only.

These are probably the macros I use more than any other. Especially helpful for
longer documents or if you work with several at once.

New in this version: bug fix.

Yikes — I'd probably need to spend the time and effort you mention to find a
program that will open them — as I don't have a clue or need to password-protect
individual files, I guess they're not actually encrypted.

I placed the file on WP Viewer, and received the following message:

"I was unable to convert to [name of file] for viewing.

It may be one of the few WordPerfect file types that the libwpd conversion
software cannot open.

You should be able to convert it to RTF format with the WP Converter
application. Would you like to download the WP Converter?"

(Besides WP Converter, I also dabbled with WordPerfect Viewer and WPMacApp.)

Continuing thanks,

Thanks — is there stuff out there/past threads re erroneous messages about
encryption, for files that weren't actually password-protected but
mangled/morphed over the years due to new software, crashes, recoveries, etc.,
that somehow can be restored to their original states?

That message means that the WP Viewer doesn't recognize what kind of file it is.
I say that it MAY be a WP file because I assume that the only files that people
would drop on the program would be files that they know are WordPerfect files.

You said (if I remember correctly) that you may have tried to open some of these
files in Nisus Writer, so perhaps the best thing to do is download a current
copy of Nisus Writer (search for "Nisus Writer" on Google) and see if it will
open the files.

Um, if LibreOffice, or the WP Viewer, can open a password-protected
file, as you said, and the source code they use to do it is
available, then someone *has* reverse-engineered the algorithm.
Seeing as the algorithm seems to be pretty trivial, if you know it
then it should be straightforward to write an algorithm to find the
password for any given file. I wouldn't even be surprised if there
isn't some fixed plain text (like file type) encrypted at the head of
each file, which means it would be very easy to find the password.

The characters in the password are scattered through the file; it's documented
in many places on the web that you can easily find.

The libwpd programmers have reverse-engineered the method for removing a known
password from a file. As far as I know, they haven't attempted the more
difficult task of figuring out what an unknown password actually is. You can't
just extract it from the file.

Programs exist for finding the password in a WPDOS5 file. They don't work on
WPMac files.

Hi,

WordPerfect die hard here. Only just heard of this group. I have the last WP
program that worked on the old MAC (OS 9?) environment. I finally migrated to a
new Mac (OS 10.6.8) and to my horror, I can't open WordPerfect because "this
environment is no longer supported."

Could someone direct me to postings in this group's archives where I could get
up to speed on if/how I can revive WPerfect in this new Mac environment?

I am so hopeful that a solution is just around the corner. "Word" was made to
discourage writing, period :)

In the group's description on the front page here, you'll see a link to "Getting
Started with WP Mac". This will give you all the information you need. WP will
run very well on your new Mac.

Welcome to the group. Out of curiosity, where did you hear of it?

I meant to post this earlier, but I've been swamped :-(

For those of you on this list who want to run (certain) Windows apps on your
Mac, including a few specific WP-Win versions[1], CodeWeavers is offering the
latest version of its CrossOver app (which runs Windows apps without requiring a
Windows install, i.e., not a virtual machine set-up like VMWare Fusion,
Parallels, or VirtualBox) plus a 12-month update/support subscription, FREE,
today (Oct 31) only.

The latest version is supposed to run on Mac OS X Intel 10.5-10.8.

Actually I see that the current version already has that, under Automatic

One thing that might be worth writing is a "MakePDF" macro that would rename the
output file that is sent across to OS X, so that the folder action script on OS
X could recognize the output file and create a PDF file without displaying the
"Print or PDF?" prompt.

On my Windows-based system for WPDOS, my PDF-creating macro optionally creates a
text file containing a name for the PDF file, and sends that across to Windows,
where the equivalent of a folder action script applies that name the PDF output.
I thought of trying the same thing in SheepShaver, but couldn't figure out how
to do it.

Again, I don't know whether this is possible under SheepShaver in the same way
it's possible with the scripting language I use under Windows

Download it again. There is nothing wrong with the file. If a second download
gives you a file that won't open on your system, then something is wrong with
your system. Find a repair tool like Yasu (search for that name) and see if that
solves the problem.
