RE: [worldbuildersguild] Blaxxun Platform Software Replacement

Thank you for contacting me. I think now is an excellent time for companies to look for ways to provide robust, turn-key solutions for self-host 3D multi-user communities. Everyone wants to participate in online 3D communities. There are several big name sites that offer the 3D multi-user chat service, e.g., Second Life, There, ActiveWorlds, Kaneva, etc. BUT there is an absolute void in self-hosted solutions. Currently the only one (now that Blaxxun seems to be gone) that markets self-hosted solutions is ActiveWorlds. I have heard from several people about various initiatives to develop open source and partial platforms. I think there is a tremendous business opportunity being missed for not having a turn-key solution with the full user and object management framework in place. There are literally thousands (maybe more) of site operators from the old BBS era and web administrators/businesses that want to have their own self-hosted 3D solution. If the solution is based on non-proprietary standards like VRML and/or X3D then it will make a smooth transition for the tens of thousands of VRML/X3D coders out there.

Do you know what the exact status of Blaxxun is?

Has anyone considered buying them out and enhancing their framework to bring it into the state-of-the-art?

I have installed the BS Collaborative Server and will be familiarizing myself with it. I will provide you feedback after I have had a chance to check things out. One thing I will be most curious about is user management and object management as well as how easy it will be to modify existing VRML source to work in the BS Collaborative environment.

Thanks again for contacting me!
Take care...

Subject: Re: [worldbuildersguild] Blaxxun Platform Software Replacement

Hi Bruce,

thank you for bringing this up. In connection with the actual discussion about blaxxun communities on worldbuildersguild we want to inform about Bitmanagements multi-user support. As the former client team of blaxxun interactive AG we have been continously building up our product portfolio.

Please see and test the demo of BS Collaborate multi-user server:
http://www.bitmanagement.de/products/bs_collaborate.en.html

It is in compliance with the network sensor as discussed in Web3D. We follow the approach that BS Collaborate enables 3D specific functionality on top of a 2D community, e.g based on Drupal.org or other.

For our general understanding how Bitmanagement can assist application programming partners please see:
http://www.bitmanagement.de/bsworkflow

A demo video taken directly from BS Contact shows some applications:
http://www.bitmanagement.de/download/media/final_master_720_400.wmv

We are preparing a new website where we are presenting - besides a shop - a new commercial program called BS Artist where artists can get a PC license of BS Contact for 1 EUR net and a website license (as long as the website has no commercial purpose) for 1 EUR net surpressing our logo on the PC and for the website visitors. In return we retain our right to link to the artist website for our marketing purposes and the artist website should refer to Bitmanagement as 3D partner. As an example please see the Berlin Virtual Wall project at http://www.virtuelle-mauer-berlin.de/english/index.htm

For small companies with commercial approaches we offer revenue sharing models in our BS Invest Programme.

In respect of BS Collaborate we already contracted it to universities, community concepts like www.citylife.com or multiple MMORPGs that are under development and we have a development roadmap with lots of good things in it that we are working on.

All the best,

Peter

Now that Blaxxun is offline the Blaxxun communities that still exist have even less hope of surviving. We all know that Blaxxun has not updated their products in 5 years and their product is buggy with lack of support for the newer OSs. Those of us who have purchased licenses got suckered into a pending dilemma. With the license being tied to the IP address of the server, you can't change IP addresses without getting a new key from Blaxxun. Now that they are gone, there will be no new keys. ISPs bring about changes to IP addresses on a regular basis to their customer and with the upcoming migration to IPv6 most every Blaxxun site will be impacted.

My purpose of posting this message is not to preach doom and gloom because most have seen the writing on the wall for some time; so my purpose is to see what platform/server products people are looking to for fulfilling the VRML/X3D community needs. I am not sure there are any (at least that an independent, small company can buy). Does anyone know of any turn-key solutions for VRML/X3D communities? How about turn-key 3D community server software (only one I know of is ActiveWorlds)?

If you haven't planned for this inevitability, it is time to start planning...

Take care...
