When I clean my morels the old and diseased ones get heaved out the
door into this general area. I don't wash morels before I split them
and dry them. You don't want to dry them with bugs inside. I do
however rinse off the ones that I am going to cook fresh, save the
water and heave out into the yard. The only tree in that area was a
Russian Olive tree that the wind blew down on top of a then new Subaru
Wagon. This area is somewhat protected from severe weather. I've
never seen a morel in this area before, just the crocus that we shoved
into the ground in the fall. John must have really sharp eyes to have
spotted them there.

Okay, the first morel progression map for 2005 has been posted at
http://www.strutz.com/Mushrooms/MorelProgressionMap.htm

I thought you guys were joking, but I stand corrected!

A couple of days ago a guy called me looking for John and told me that
he hunts morels in California among the olive trees. It is the only
place he ever finds them. But those are real olive trees not Russian
Olive trees. And that was California, I've never heard of that around
here.

Maybe, we are jumping to the conclusion that the third letter of the
clue is an r. Are there any other mushrooms that start with mo??

How about mori (polypore)? Page 265 of Simon & Shuster's Guide to
Mushrooms. It grows in the spring, on wood and has honeycomb shaped
pores.

I'm still not ready to head into the woods. I don't think that
conditions are right yet. When I dug out my horseradish during Holy
Week to prepare hrin for the Easter basket there was still traces of
snow in the orchard. My rhubarb is coming up, but I've yet to see an
asparagus spear poking above the mulch in the garden. Rhubarb is a
good sign but asparagus is better. However that being said, check
this out...

Joe, very cool. I wonder if you could take a ground temperature reading
where the morels came up. It would be interesting to know. Sometimes the
ground is a little warmer close to a house or sidewalk. I agree that it
seems too early to head into the woods, but I'll admit that I took a quick
look around a couple of elm trees near my house yesterday - no sign of
anything coming up.

Also, I would like to hear from more experienced folks about what their
thoughts are on finding morels this early in the season. Does it say
anything about the rest of the season? Or is it some freak thing that
doesn't necessarily mean anything?

As for whatever "mo" mushrooms John saw at Joe's house whether they were
morels or something else, maybe he could just tell us so we might spot them
when we are out. We have no idea what he saw...

I saw dafodills blooming in a natural setting today. It is another
good sign that we are getting closer. Don't forget that the first
morels to usually appear are the black morels.

I have been looking at crocus this week. I should have been looking in
morel hunters yards.

Mushroom dreams don't keep me up.I dreamed of finding morels right
after this. They were under syca-
more. I haven't found them under sycamore. I think I may this year.

Happy April Fool's Day.

I don't know what John thought he saw in my yard. All I found
were rocks that looked like mushrooms. John set the stage, but I
assembled the props. My first "clue" in my previous e-mail was
that "I cut them in half and dried them".

After that things just kind of got out of hand. So look closely at my
posted pictures. there as some small clues that you were being set
up.

Anyway, I'm sure that I've piqued everyone's interest and
now we are all hopeful for a very fruitful and bountiful morel picking
season…in a couple of weeks.

Joe and John,

I volunteer my time and resources to benefit our mushroom club as many of
our members do. I agreed to do the morel progression maps in good faith that
the information that people give me is true and accurate. You had me put up
a map as part of your joke, wasting my time and effort, and getting the
hopes up of many of us that morels might actually be found early this year.
I don't share your sense of humor.

Later,
Jim

Perhaps I should have had my wife take a photo of me crawing around
in the front yard on all fours, among the crocus, propping up
split/dried morels with toothpicks after John's comments that there
were mor...s in my front yard.

Now I've fallen victum to my on own joke and I have to take at least
a short walk into the woods just to see what's going on. I doubt
that I'll find anyting of value or interest but I'll still take my
gps and camera just for fun.

Sorry that you had to put some effort into the map and took offense
but the more folks you can draw into an April Fool's joke the better
it is.

Joe

Mr. Strutz, et.al.:

Are the "Verpas" considered "Morels" for the map? (They are
considered the "early morels" by some:
(http://www.exploringthenorth.com/morel/mush.html). They also
function as timepieces, setting the clock for the remainder of
the fruiting season.

How about, by the old nomenclature, Helvella gigas? Will there be
different symbols for the semiliberia vs. the augusticeps?

Curious, with actual specimens in the 'fridge and field, (but no M.
esculenta of course.)

Unless you consider the "Verpas" the early morels:

as some do.

Hey Joe,

How about going out and looking again. If they are still there, take
a picture of them, if you can find them. Remember they are very
small. Post the picture on groups.

I didn't read John's email close enough and now think after re-
reading it and how small the mushrooms are, that my guess of Mori
Polyporus is probably wrong.

I am now thinking that it is some type of small asco. The Mori's cap
is listed as 2-8 centimeters wide.

I really did find mushrooms at Joe's house. Just in case anyone
wondered I did not pick them. They were growing right on top of a
rail road tie that was touching his sidewalk. The mushrooms were
Mollisia probably close to Mollisia cinerea. They are very small,
and easy to miss, less that 1/8 inch wide and are sort of cup or disc
shapped. Mollisia has a look-alike that I often find called Tapesia,
a microscope is often needed to tell them apart. The Morels that Kim
and I ate came from California. I put some photos of them in the
photo section of this group. Morels are now being collected there
and often come up in mulched areas. It shure would be different to
collect morels in mulch at walmart or in the mulched areas at the
McDonalds drive through.

I have a brother who lives in Roanoke, VA 320 miles directly south of
Pittsburgh. Yesterday he hiked to his favorite morel spot. Under the
Tulip Poplar tree in his back yard. There he found seven morels. He
has no idea if they are early or late, just that they always show up
there.

I posted pictures of 2 collections of California morels in the photo
section of this group. They are the last 2 photos in the section,
prehaps #103 and 104. Kim and I ate a few of the first collection.
Kim and I both agree that the California morels that we ate do not
taste nearly as good as the ones from Pennsylvania. We thought they
hardly had any flavor and they were a real disappointment. It is my
opinion that the Morels from California that we ate were a different
species than here in PA. I think ones we ate from CA were Morchella
rufobrunnea. They differ by bruising brownish or orangish to
redddish brown, take a look at the last photo I posted in the photo
section of the California morels, the stalks were brown. The larger
Yellow morels that we get here in PA are Morchella esculenta. I keep
an index card box that I occasionally record when and where I find
mushrooms. I just got out the morel cards and on April 4, 1998 I
found 5 Black Morels, in another location I found 10 scarlet cups and
5 devils urn. On that date I hunted for 8 hours on only found 5. I
think a black morel or 2 could be found now if you looked hard in a
black morel spot the entire day but I will not start looking for at
least another week and then only expect to find one or 2. It should
be at least 3 more weeks till I can pick enough black morels for a
meal. I will try to look in a black morel spot that gets about 20 of
them right next to the road on monday and will post if I find
any.

morels in our yard from last year and the other is some colorful morels
from a club walk last year. lol. They needed some work so Kim and I
had some fun. We are calling them photoshop morels lol.

Pennsylvania has a state flower, tree, insect, etc., but it does not
have a state mushroom. John has asked me to post this message because
he is busy working on a project for the NorthEast Mycological
Federation.

The Western PA Mushroom Club has a number of members on the
Pennsylvania Biological Survey in the Fungus Section. John is Chairman
of the Fungus Section. Bob Lucas, Dorothy Fornof and I are members of
the committee.

Now might be a good time to get a mushroom designated as a State
Fungus. Edible, non-edible, poisonous, hallucinogenic.

Please forward your suggestions. If someone has the same idea as you
do, say that too.

Charlotte thinks chantrelles or shaggy parasols should be because
they are good edibles and so easy to find here.

I think Ganoderma tsugea, because it grows on the Hemlock, the
state tree, and I would be able to remember it.

We think both your choices are excellent. I have been kicking around
the idea of the honey mushroom or the Aminita muscaria. Of course,
Becky thinks the Aminita is a poor choice because her third graders
might decide to try it. She might have a point.

This is a very serious question we are asking. We really think that
there is a distinct possibility we will be able to get one passed by
the legislature.

This is a venture we first discussed in the first year of the club
and with everything else going on no one had time to do anything with
it. So please, give us your ideas.

I like honey mushrooms and Amanita muscaria. I didn't suggest A.
muscaria for pretty much the same reasons as Becky. There are a lot
of choices. I'm going to check out if any other states have
a state mushroom.

I did search and it looks like only two states have a mushroom as

Michigan isn't happy about it. lol

My vote for the state mushroom would be the Blewit. They are easy to
find, identify, edible and I think they are pretty!
Who doesn't love a colorful mushroom?

My sincere apologies to all of you serious morel hunters and
mycologists.

I'm still somewhat amazed that so many fell for it hook, line and
sinker. Had John not set the stage with his posting, then I probably
wouldn't have even had the idea. Some people are upset, some think
it funny. A good April fool's joke plays on the flaws of human
nature and I used the overwhelming desire to find that first morel.
There were a lot of clues in the postings that it was an April Fool's
day prank, including the statement that "I was not going to head out
into the woods to look for morels." The only morels that I mentioned
were the "ones" that mysteriously appeared in my front yard. The
weather itself, as well as the other harbingers of spring/morels are
not present. There are no violets, dandelions, may apples, forsythia
or other signs that the morels should be fruiting. I guess I just
assumed that no one would take it serious for any amount of time,
especially anyone who had hunted for morels before, because it was
obvious to me that there just couldn't be any morels around and I've
only been hunting for morels for two years. I would not have played
such a prank if we were closer to the appearance of morels in this
area. It was not intended as a cruel hoax, just an innocent April
Fool's joke that played on the desire to be the first to find a
morel. I see that my joke did do the one thing I wanted, which was
have everyone looking forward to hunting for morels.

I was pleased that so many of you visited my "On The Stump" web
site. In the future you'll find more bits of news and my ramblings
about mushrooms, my garden and other bats that fly out of my belfry.

You can be assured that all future morel sightings that I post will
be legitimate.

This month's WPMC meeting, on the third Tuesday of April (the 19th)
at Beechwood Farms, will be all about finding and identifying morels
and avoiding the poisonous look alikes.

April 9 - 10:00-12:00 Fall Run Park, Allegheny County. Meet Dick
Dougall and Dick Duffy. From Rt. 28 go north on Rt. 8 for .7 miles
to Saxonburg Blvd. Continue north to the 2nd red light and turn right
on Fall Run Road. Cross Pine Creek and make an immediate left into
the parking lot.

We request that no one hunts a walk or foray location for at least
two weeks prior to a walk or foray. It is only through your
cooperation that we can have successful walks and forays. All walks
& forays will be held rain or shine. Come 15-30 min early and
socialize. All walks start on time, so be early, if you are late we
will already be in the woods.

For all walks and forays, bring water and lunch. Dress for the
weather. Bring basket, wax or paper bags (no plastic) to keep
mushrooms separated, whistle, compass, chair, hand lens, insect
repellent, cell phone, and books for identification. Also bring a
knife to dig up mushrooms for identification or to cut edibles off to
keep them clean. Try to dig up 3 of the same species at different
stages of development. Don't pick old mushrooms; leave them to drop
their spores. Bring your membership card and a friend or two. You
are responsible for not getting lost, if you have that tendency stick
like glue to others. We won't wait for you, and we won't come look
for you. Don't take the identification of the person standing next
to you, they might not know as much as you do. Only club mycologists
and identifiers should be used for advice. The Walk Leader will tell
you when to be back at the walk starting place where the mushrooms
will be put on paper plates and the Walk Identifier or Club
Mycologist will put names on only the mushrooms that they know well.
Take notes and pictures to help you remember the mushrooms. You
should go home and check books yourself. Whether you decide to eat a
mushroom, is ultimately only your decision.
