There is a bug in IE where IE doesn't expand the select box when you go
past the fixed width.

eg:

Is there an good/easy way to fix this problem in wordpress widgets?

I have just joined this E-Mail list as I *much* prefer to use mailing
lists for support (rather than forums). I've had one WordPress
installation running (used by my daughter) for a couple of years but
that is just a totally unmodified and unenhanced one.

I'm now venturing into more customisation as I'm aiming to use
WordPress for running what is more of a journal (or two journals
actually) than a blog. I have just installed two instances of
WordPress 2.9.1 on my home server (Ubuntu Server 9.10) and they're up
and running OK. I have also started playing with plugins and skins,
even to the extent of changing the code a little (I'm a Software
Engineer by trade, since the early 1970s).

So, to my question at last!

Are there any major pitfalls to sharing the plugins and themes
directories between the two installations? I.e. if I simply delete
the directories completely from one installation and put symbolic
links to the same directory in the other installation instead? This
will mean that customisation I do in one of my WordPress installations
will automatically be available in the other one too. From reading
the documentation about multiple blogs, how to update, etc. it seems
to me that there shouldn't be any major issues from doing this but I'd
appreciate any comments or warnings.

You could take a look at WPMU which allows you run multiple blog instances
from one installation. Alternatively, you could wait a few months until
WordPress 3.0 is released, which will natively support multiple blogs :)

Yes, I'd seen WordPressMU and decided it was overkill for my simple needs.

However WordPress 3.0 could well be worth waiting for, there will
surely be simple[ish] upgrade paths from 2.9.1.

Thanks.

Are there WordPress 3.0 betas yet, I'll take a look as this isn't a
mission critical application, I can cope with a few oddities.

In the documentation (http://codex.wordpress.org/Creating_Admin_Themes)
there are references to Admin Themes but the links from that page
don't work and I can't find any other information.

So, do Admin Themes actually exist or have they disappeared somewhere
along the line.

There's no beta yet, but if you're really brave, you could use the Beta
Tester plugin (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-beta-tester/) to
keep up-to-date with the development version. It's not recommended on
mission-critical sites, since stuff can break (especially since 3.0 is
bringing some pretty big changes) and you'll definitely find some oddities,
but fun if you enjoy living on the "bleeding edge" :)

Cheers everybody, I'm epsi, a new member.

++ Background

I'm a WP noob and my background is Joomla.
This last three weeks is very exciting.

* I'm learning WP
-- No.. I haven't made a live site yet. Still on localhost.

* relesead system plugin
-- http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/mootools-libraries/

* released theme
-- http://iluni.org/component/phocadownload/section/4-
-- it looks similar to iluni.org, except it is wordpress.

++ Done so far

Okay, it is clear from Joomla! view the analogy is
+ J! System Plugin -- WP Plugin
+ J! Module -- WP Plugin or WP Widget
+ J! Content Plugin -- WP Shortcode
+ J! Component -- ???

++ The question

Where can find any tutorial how to make make component in wordpress?
Or a native method to make something that works like components?

I've googled but I can't find the right term.
I've read codex, wp-tavern, wp-beginner, wp-recipes,
but still have no clue.

I'm not sure about the definition of component.
But I think it is something that have it own page and url
so we can manage its own url.

Like

Any enlightment is greatly appreciated. ;-)

A client of us put up all their content including images in pages of a
WordPress site while the site was in development and under a
development hostname <dev.domain.com>

Now that the site has gone live, all the images that were uploaded via
the WYSIWYG have absolute URLs beginning with the dev domain such as
http:/dev.domain.coml/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/image.jpg

How can we change the top level to either be a new hostname or
preferably to be a relative URL?

Is there a setting for this or is there a way to search and replace
multiple pages of a WP site?

PS What is the best practice for this so in the future when developing
sites we do not run into the same problem again?

Thanks in advance

Hi epsi!

Welcome to the wonderful world of WordPress.

Did you create that plugin and theme?

It seems to me that Joomla components are the equivalent of WordPress
plugins. Are you looking for something specific that a Joomla component does
that you'd like WordPress to do?

Or maybe you mean a specific type of section on a site, like where it has
its own look and feel, and displays a certain type of content. If so, that's
created by manipulating the WP theme files and creating specific stylesheets
for certain types of content.

Hi Charlie,

That kind of thing is actually pretty easy to fix. It's just a matter of
doing a search and replace across the WordPress database. We had to do that
recently when we moved WordPressGarage.com to WPGarage.com.

You can either do this with a query in PHP My-Admin, or there's a plugin
that makes this really simple:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search-and-replace/. Just make sure to
backup the database first in case you make a mistake.

[Yes] The template is port of my J! template.
[Nope] Almost 75% of the mootools effect is modifications from davidwalsh.name

++ Needs
I've made that J! template for a non profit organization (iluni.org)
since last october.
But I might need a blogging system for sub-organization.

This new web might needs database component beside its blogging system,
and maybe any other kind of component later.

While I do not really have specific needs.
I need to explore WP capability.

Any tools is great when we know how to code.
Off course anyone can code J! component happily.
But I think its time to consider a mature blogging engine.

[thematic?, pods cms?, wpmu?, buddypress?, podpress?, backpress?, glotpress?]
Looks like WP having a promising future.

++ My consideration is:
It would be easier to code a WP component
when we have the guidance,
than coding a blogging system under Joomla MVC.

Though Joomla is great for other purpose (especially That MVC in minds).
No native commenting system in Joomla drive me crazy.

That's right. It should be derived form plugins.
http://docs.joomla.org/What_are_components,_modules,_mambots_and_plugins%3F

Okay I understand now, it is not derived from plugin.
I currently do not need different look and view, but it need specific content.

From J! point of view,
* single.php is a actually a component [--] article component  in J!
* archive.php is actually some kind of article component
* links.php is a different kind component
* mmmhhh how about photo gallery? I'll find it out later. I saw many
plugin in extends.

> Miriam

Thank you so much for this explanation Miriam,
That gives me spirit to continue.

I still have a lot of question like
"how do I manage the component (as plugin)
when it is actually a page (in theme)?"

Okay, Now I have raw imagination how it might works,
But I need time to implement.

I think I better learn, and explore,
so I can find the right question to ask.

~epsi
little note: ;-) I might have a biased perspective about J! and WP
because I haven't use WP very often. I still need more experience in
WP so I can cover both fairly. Not to praise one over the other.

Hi epsi,

Interesting to hear that Joomla doesn't have a commenting system built in.
That's really annoying.

If I understand what Joomla modules are now, then the way you would create
these types of modules in WordPress are by creating Page Templates. You can
create multiple Page Templates, and then when a person is creating a new
Page in WordPress (as opposed to a Post, which is part of the "blog" section
of a WP site with chronology, categories, tags, etc.), they get offered a
bunch of Page related options, such as where the Page goes in the heirarchy
(is it a child page of another page), and a drop-down menu of Page templates
that they can choose from.

As for photo galleries, WP has tons of photo gallery plugins available. It's
just a matter of choosing the one that works best for you.

I recommend looking at the source of nextgen-gallery for anyone who want to
learn how to make a component in WP.
* It has enable-permalink that has similar result of J! router.
* Instead of load component in J! template, WP loads shortcode in posts/ pages.

If I may conclude,
WP has no concept of component the way J! does.
But WP has *different-approach* to accomplish this task.

It means,
all U can do with J! component,
WP might capable of doing it.

"about CMS with framework."

++ The roles

Framework is for developer.
CMS is for admin.

Coder believe in text mode, enjoy write code in editor.
Admin needs control panel, who can install and manage in GUI.

++ Different tools for different purpose

* Hey.. I need a mature blogging system:
= WordPress can do no wrong.

* She simply wants to write her own extension, clean and tidy:
= use Joomla MVC

* We are the a night coder, We need to cutdown development time for extensive
database web2 app:
= might use framework with ORM like symfony.

++ Multiple requirement
The problem arise when we need combination of 'em.

* Propose a WP version with MVC in mind? (to cover coders needs)
= ah.. come on... we have limited time.

* Write my own J! commenting system?
= Well.., that also needs a lot of time.

* Propose Doctrine-Project (ORM) integration to my favorites CMS.
= Complaining won't help. CMS should be light, non bloated.

* I want my CMS to be a Drupal clone!
= Why not using Drupal instead.

++ CMS/Framework united.
I think CMS would consider internal framework.
while there will be a framework based CMS. e.g. SteerCMS.

Anyone know how would they be?

Which plugins are good for Printing blog pages?

Now when I press print the blog gets printed without most of the pictures
and the configuration of the page gets messed up.

Is there a good plugin I can use so people can print the pages in a neater
format and is there a plug in that could allow the reader to just print a
jpeg from the site (some special coupon offers that I have)

Hi Joanna,

You've probably seen the WP-Print plugin by Lester Chan, right (
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-print/)? We use it alot and have not
had any trouble with it.

As for just printing an image, that would probably work with some Javascript
that you could add to specific images. I know that's not very helpful.
Otherwise, you could just give your users directions, i.e.: Right click on
image, select View Image, press Ctrl+P to print.

Looks like BP have their own framework we could use in WP.

BuddyPress is for creating your own social network. Are you sure that's what
you meant?

In any case, if you're going to start looking into BuddyPress, things have
changed and are going to change even more. It's now possible to install BP
on a regular WP install without the need of WPMU. Check out this post for

I am doing this out of curiosity, so maybe I shouldn't be getting into
this at all!

I am running a very simple wp 3.0 alpha on localhost / XAMPP local
server with a functional "single" installation of WP3.0alpha
I am curious to get the "multi" part working and to just see what it's
capable of doing.
Here are the settings that I have built. It isn't working and any
suggestions or guidance is greatly appreciated!

  >>>http://localhost/wp-admin/network.php
You cannot install a network of sites with your server address.
You cannot use an IP address such as 127.0.0.1 or a single-word hostname
like localhost.
Consider using localhost.localdomain.

  >>>wp-config.php
define('WP_ENABLE_MULTISITE', true);
/** MySQL hostname */
define('DB_HOST', 'localhost');

  >>>hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost

  >>>httpd.conf
# Virtual hosts
Include "conf/extra/httpd-vhosts.conf"

  >>>httpd-vhosts.conf
<VirtualHost *:80>
DocumentRoot W:/X/htdocs
ServerName localhost.localdomain
ServerAlias  *.localhost
<Directory "W:/X/htdocs">
          Options Indexes FollowSymLinks Includes ExecCGI
          AllowOverride All
          Order allow,deny
          Allow from all
</Directory>
</VirtualHost>

Hi John,

I haven't tried to WP 3.0 yet, but it could be related to the multi-user
aspect. From what I understand, WPMU demands more than just your usual
server configuration. I don't know if one can develop WPMU on localhost. But
if it's a problem, maybe 3.0 is inheriting this problem by adding the
multi-user aspect. Which, if this is the case, is a major drawback for
developers.

I'm interested to know if you find out something else about this.

Miriam

With the latest nightly, you should be able to run multi-site on localhost,
though it has to be in a subdirectory, i.e. http://localhost/wordpress/ (or
similar. For details, see:
http://wpdevel.wordpress.com/2010/03/02/i-cooked-up-a-patch-that-allows-to-setup\
/

Also, note that the constant has been changed to WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE in the
latest alpha.

customers. By the way, what is Email Marketing? Let's find out.

Hi all,
I'm new to the list and new to WP dev in general, but have quite a bit of
experience in web development. I've developed my first theme with help from a
tutorial but haven't quite figured out how to use relative paths in the
templates...for example: in my theme folder i have a directory called
images..but in trying to use it in my src attribute the images don't show up.
what i'd like to know is if i should use straight php here or does wp supply a
function that returns the current directory or some other method?

Thanks Kindly,

percy
