The African drum heralds the beginning of something new, something
different, the start of a change. It accompanies the birth of a new
day,the sart of a war, the beautiful birth of a new born child, the
dance of courtship, celebrating the merging of man and maiden a
herald of the future.
As our drums begin to roll this day, i ask that we all give of
ourselves, constructively, with criticism and solid ideas but not to
go down the path of destructive disagreement.WE roll the drums and
draw upon our diversity to weave the beautiful fabric, our part to
the cause of the WSIS Youth across the globe.
Let the drums Roll, We raise the standards of the issues we are
finding solutions and plans of action for.
The drums begin for CONTENT
The drums begin for ACCESS
The drums begin for GENDER
The drums begin for HEALTH
The drums begin for EDUCATION & ILLITERACY
The drums begin for ICT's & WAR
The drums begin for BRAIN DRAIN
The drums begin for ETHICS & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (IPR)
Let the AFRICAN DRUMS SPEAK OUT FROM WITHIN YOU!!!
WELCOME TO A NEW BEGINNING!!!
VIVA AFRICA!!!

I can see that all is set for us to take off with the discussions. I trust that the strength that is hidden in the African blood will be directed towards our involvement in the emerging Information Society, beginning from tomorrow (and today, for those who are on GMT + 2.
Please express yourself, always asking yourself these two questions... (1) What will Africa take to the Information Society, and (2) What has the Information Society got for Africa?
From tomorrow, we begin the process of undressing Africa from her worn robes and replacing them with the enviable garments that our fathers and mothers wove. Viva Africa!
Let the drums roll...

Hello all,
As we all brace up for the commencement of our conference tomorrow, I
want us to note that there is a way we can all stay younger and
stronger together as a group with focus. What I mean is that by
taking this crusade to the folks in High schools and making them know
the import of ICT at a tender and younger age will make us younger
and of course give us more strength. If the young lads will know now,
awareness to ICT will increase in Africa and they will all start to
hearness their mind towards a better Africa tomorrow.
Looking forward to meeting you tomorrow.
BJ Maxwell.
Hi there my fellow youths. I'm Gbeminiyi Sofowora, a female member of wsisyouthafrica and a member of GRIN another youth organization that uses ICT as a tool for development. I was so happyu to discover the existence of WSISyouthafrica and i immediately subscribed. I'm sure with one mind, one spirit and with co-operation, we'll go places and together raise Africa to the level where it belongs by showcasing our different talents. and learning from oneanother. About female participation, it's a global issue and i think what we need do is to throw challenges at our fellow sisters so that they can wake up to the various calls... African ladies have been set aside for too long and they've come to accept their place to be after the but this is rather wrong....... To my fellow sisters in the house i want to challenge you all this day that there's actually nothing we can't do.. there's no height we can't achieve......all we need do is believe in ourselves and set out with such great determination and we'll attain heights we've never thought we could achieve.............
Hi guys,
I am Oguntubi Ayodele (Image) and I would be facilitating our synergy
of ideas and thoughts on Education & Illiteracy during our
Conferencing!
I believe it would be great if we have some juice before we allow our
brainwaves, concern and passion converge. For a strategic and
resourceful discussion, I have decided to put up this few Process
Guide(Juice) up so that we all would share ideas, experiences and
thots creatively. However, this should not bottle you in ... feel
free to look beyond my eyes!
EDUCATION & ILLITERACY
WE are going o be considering the role of ICTs in the above stated
topics so we should
* Bring to light the peculiar challenges in your society
* The Role Education could play in your society in issues that are
peculiar to your local environment.
* What your view is of the level of education and Illiteracy in your
society.
* The Peculiar advantage your society could have if provided with
access to information.
* What role does the Government, Profit(Private) and Civil Society
play in this issues?
* What are the steps that you feel could be taken by this
stakeholders?
* What are the initiatives that have worked in your enviromment?
* How is the social perspective of Technology in your society?!
* What do you hope to see if your society?!
This should serve as a juice!!!!! So from here onwards, just free
your thoughts and let's see this forum as an opportunity to create
the Future for our generation and many yet unborn! A new Africa!
To our Sisters and Brothers who speak diverse languages, go ahead and
express yourself and we would work out the translation!
Remain Wonderful and am looking forward to a time of learning,
sharing and building together! Thanks!!!

We welcome you in this Africa youth digital dividend eConference...
Well Tony those questions are quite a mouth full. Shouldn't we just wait for the 22nd.- You know the question of ICTs and women participation in development in Africa has to a large extent exposed the loophole projected by our culture.
Do know what it is when an average African woman thinks that things like technology are not for her, probably because of what her society dictates to her? Small wounder that in the rural areas the women folk even find it difficult to operate just a transistor radio that has been laying years in their house!!!!!!!!
lets save the best for the last!!!!!!!!!1

I have written a document of a sort detailing what we will be doing in the next few days. We are really increasing in size (very fast) but can do even better:-). Please read and lets include us in our schedules so we can have the best of ourselves in these discussions. And don't forget, keep spreading the word!!!
The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in 2003 (Geneva) and 2005 (Tunis) will be the culmination of a process of global discussion and harmonization for all countries of the world to come together to develop & foster a clear statement of political will and a concrete plan of action for achieving the goals of the Information Society.
WSIS is an initiative of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the United Nations (UN). Preparation for WSIS consists of Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) and Regional meetings. The African Regional Conference was held in Bamako, Mali from 26-30 May 2002. The next Preparatory Committee meeting will be held between the 17th and 28th of February 2003. A Youth Caucus (http://projects.takingitglobal.org/wsisprepcom1) was initiated at PrepCom1 and has continued discussing areas of concern around the agenda of themes of the WSIS.
WSISYOTUHAFRICA is the African section of the global youth caucus, and we are working on developing and organizing our input into the whole processes beginning with this eConference, and followed by interactive discussions through this group. We will help raise Africa's voice through the youth - and make the Information Society truly democratic and equal!
THE eCONFERENCE:
1.WHAT:
This meeting of minds is a forum for structuring the input of Africa's youths to the WSIS Youth Caucus’ paper for the WSIS and our inclusion in our respective government’s delegation, policy/position paper. We’ll be discussing on how to develop and foster a clear statement of political will and a concrete plan of action for achieving the goals of the Information Society.
Our springboards/topics include:
§Issues of Access (a really big issue for a lot of Africans)
§Content and Rural Inclusion
§Gender
§Education & Illiteracy
§Intellectual Property Rights & Ethics
§Health
§ICT’s& WAR
§Brain Drain
2.WHEN:
We’ll be working with the following timeline for our discussions on the issues/topics listed above. We ALL really need to have read and assimilated the posted documents. It’ll help guide our ‘talk’ such that we do not go over issues well handled already (except we think it has not been well handled/covered). We also need someone to help translate our discussions into French, any volunteers mail me!
* Phase 1:November 20th – Nov 30th: work with the timeline below
§Nov 20th -22nd: Lets meet YOU!! And your organization (Lets know what you do, how you do it, and where you are!)
§Nov 23rd - 29th: Discussion on key issues/topics stated under ‘WHAT’. A moderator will handle each topic. Here’s where all your thoughts, observations and experience come in! Do not forget to read the posted documents please!
§Nov. 30: A summary of the week's discussion @ the eGroup which wil be adapted into by one of us incorporating sustainable ideas and suggestions raised. Nick then incorporates our document, the WSIS African Youth Document, into the global text!
Phase 2: Dec 4 – 30th: Elaboration on the WSIS Agenda, here we delve into more areas as encountered raised in Phase one.
‘Development of African strategy for the achievement of the WSIS Youth Caucus goals - which include inclusion in the WSIS process of structuring a statement of Political will and a workable plan of action that takes into consideration the diversity that exist in our various antecedents and inclusion of YOUTH Oriented positions and plans of actions in each governments perspectives. ‘That WHY we are coming together from far and near, our way of shaping our future for the better
5.How:
We’ll be taking the various aspects/topics that we propose to input into, mull on them using the provided documents as stepping stones and our various experiences as points of references as guides! The eConference becomes our 'village square' or 'Chaupal’ as it is called in some parts of the world, where our age grade/group, discuss, disagree and finally come to a consensus as to the way forward for us and for our society, taking into consideration other youths of the World, Our immediate society including government & other parastatals and the generations of the future.
OUR how becomes:
* Revision of posted documents
* Discussion of new ideas and those within these documents in light of experience since they were created and from what we garner from the present state of things
* A final draft from OUR thoughts and discussions on this conference as brought together by US!
6.FINALLY:
Friends, lets have us a lively discussion on what the information society means to young Africans (Anglophone, Francophone, Arabic speaking nations and all others inclusive), how they can and are contributing...'
Hello Guys!

Waoh Am I glad to be here!
In just a couple of days this great group has evolved! I bet you
watch in the next couple of weeks...
Well, I beleive this forum should be seen as a strategic forum to
create the future for this generation and those yet on born in Africa.
We should not realise that the change and development we desire can
only be thru strategic and calculated commitment and hardwork!
However, I beleive from the tone and frequency in this group we would
be able to create a worthy and resourceful change.
I would love to add VIVA AFRICA! I seem to love that word but hey!
What does VIVA mean! I beleive the multilingua are needed indeed.
I am on a tour to the ladies world we must get the ladies here indeed
now from the begining.
Remain Wonderful everyone and hey! Asiwaju keep up the great work!

Hello to you all. I just joined the group now fron Nigeria. I know i
will be posting a lot of things in the coming days.
I know the poem below does not have aq lot to do with the objectives
of this group but please allow me to start my posts with this i wrote
for AFRICA. also available on TIGThis is Fatherland.
Our Africa.
Beyond geographical expression,
Deeper than Colonial boundaries,
A Content in our spirits
The conclusions of our minds.
We will not bow,
Our gaze is set as a flint,
From eyes heavy with vision.
Tell it to them that are dim
We are bound by freedom
We be stronger than our chains.
When next the sun appears above our horizon
The light of life will echo as always
Africa stands tall again!
On the mountain's hunched edge and
Discreetly survey scenic beauty
Underneath the gaudy sun's silent,
Smouldering unfriendliness
You are not a color.
Black or Brown if you like
But not a color.
You are not a mass
Of throbbing emotions, stimulus
Or flesh and blood and calcium.
The outer vestment is a misty mask,
A voiceless wall.
You are a life and thoughts.
I am a spirit,
Clasped in skin, muscle and sense.
I am like the tide,
Channelled by direction,
Trim, copious options, contemporary nativity,
Voice and song and tales-
Treading softly upon fiery, ancient grounds
And creeping with wings
Like silent rain.
You are Africa.
Beloved Fatherland
Thanks for that beautiful point... I'm sure that we can begin by telling our female friends, sisters and colleagues about this group - and the need to have some kind of gender balance.
I'm sure that we'll have more ladies as time goes on but I wanted to find out if anyone in this group can speak both/write English and French fluently in order to bridge the "language divide" as far as our francophone brothers and sisters are involved.
Thanks and have a great week people...

It is indeed good and great to be a part of this list! I hope more
members will be added to this important and timely list.
As African youths, we should endeavour to act fast... share ideas and
views about ICTs in Africa and see how we can contribute to the WSIS
Draft Declarations... to be discussed by the PREPCOM come February 17-
18, 2003.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who
contributed in the creation of this list... special thanks to Nick

Cheers.
Glad to be in on this...we have a really short time but i know we

Between Nick, Gbenga, and I a schedule for the next two weeks has
been developed to facilitate this.I will send this as soon as we
finalise on all aspect i just wanted to personally welcome us all on
