Dear All, I apologise for contributing a bit late, I hope it is not too late. *********************************** -How do you see African countries tackling the challenges of building the 21st Century skilled and educated workforce with aptitude in the application of ICTs in their every day life? According to the World Bank Institute, African countries can tackle the above thru -Incoporating an educated and skilled population to create, share, and use knowledge. -Providing a dynamic information infrastructure to facilitate the effective communication, dissemination, and processing of information. - Implementing an efficient innovation system of firms, research centers,
universities, consultants, and other organizations to tap into the growing stock of global knowledge, assimilate and adapt it to local needs, and thus create new technology. -Creating a supportive economic and institutional regime to provide incentives for the efficient use of existing and new knowledge and the flourishing of entrepreneurship. -Do you think that African education system is effective enough to inspire, assist, organize and develop, young people of all ages, to be skilled leaders for the 21st Century? More work needs to be done to update the standard of the the Education system in Africa to be effective. For example I interviewed a recent Computer Science graduate who indicated that most of what they were taught on campus were the old time programming languages. How will they be able to compete with their mates in the
global market when they get to the industry? Neverthelss, I can categorically state that improvement had been done in the recent years in Africa but African educational system still has a long way to go in catching up with the global pace of inspiring, assisting, organising and developing young people to be skilled leaders for the 21st Century. -What need to be done to harness Africa’s educational resources for youth to be active in the Information Society? Promotion of ICT publications and research. Mentorship of budding African IT youth and newcomers to the field. Review and total reformation of the Educational institutiton curricullum to include the Study of relevant course of study in the Information and Knowledge
Technology. -With the emergence of the Information Society and knowledge economy, are Africa’s youth prepared through the educational system to be effective participants? If not what are the challenges? No: they are not. Inadequate electric power supply: Most ICT Educational centres in Nigeria lack adequate supply of electricity to even tutor the students. Misuse of ICT skills to perpetuate evil in the Society e.g scam, hence a proper re-orientation need to be made for young people to show them various positive ways of utilising ICTs. And this responsibility lies on the Educational System. Inadequate perception that IT skills is meant for the geeks. More young people should be encouraged to utilise IT knowledge in their respective field of study. This can also be a
part of the Lifelong Learning Model where learning is encouraged at all levels of study. Regards Olutuase O.A KnowledgeHouseAfrica
