Kalispera,

nice to meet you. I'm a research scientist at the University of
Cambridge, but I take an interest in futurology and the implications
and consequences of the technological singularity.

My research is in structural biology, advanced enzymology with long
research goals in Whole Systems Biology and computational biology.

I lived in Greece for several years in Athens, and was working with
Prof. Stavros Hamodrakas in the division of biophysics and cell
biology, faculty of biology, University of Athens.

Anyway, loved Greece and made many friends there :)

As a reminder to all - TransVision 06 is rapidly drawing close. Held on August 17-19, some of the most important speakers of the transhumanist scene will be coming together to hold presentations on varying subjects. This is an event you don't want to miss - and since not many of you have a chance to come to Finland to join it in flesh, here's a recap of the ways you can participate virtually.

This year the theme is Emerging Technologies of Human Enhancement and we'll be looking at recent and ongoing technological developments and discussing associated ethical and philosophical questions. Some of our speakers are William Sims Bainbridge, Aubrey de Grey, Nick Bostrom, James Hughes and Natasha Vita-More.
WEBCAST. There will be an online streaming video directly from the conference. Watch each of the speakers in real time! VIRTUAL DISCUSSION. There are two ways to discuss the event in real time together with other people from around the world. Singularity Summit Summary

Based on audience response to the ideas presented at today's
Singularity Summit, here are some general observations:

    1. Humans are, by nature, conservative. In an auditorium filled
with people attending an event focused on techno-change -- and in a
university set in the middle of Silicon Valley, no less -- still the
largest applause was reserved for those with the most reactionary views.

    2. We fear change. That's normal and even healthy. In fact, it's a
survival mechanism, hard-wired in through thousands of generations of
natural selection. When taken to excess, obviously, it can be
paralyzing. Moreover, those who challenge the human tendency toward
caution are those who most often make the greatest discoveries (or die
trying).

    3. Progress -- technological and social -- continues to occur and
eventually is accepted by nearly everyone. I call this phenomenon
"Unconscious Confirmation." It's like the wonderful quote from John
Lennon, "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other
plans." Seemingly unacceptable change is what happens while we're busy
doing other things.

    4. Truly disruptive global change on a rapid timescale is something
we have never experienced. We are thus unprepared for it, and it could
even be argued that we are incapable of adequately preparing. I hope
that's not true.

πρόγραμμα του
διαστημικού
σκάφους Cassini, που
μελετά τον
Κρόνο και τα
φεγγάρια του,
εδώ και δύο
χρόνια περίπου.
Συγκεκριμένα,
σε μεγάλο
συνέδριο στη
Βιέννη, ο δρ.
Μπομπ Μπράουν
είπε ότι ο
Εγκέλαδος
περιέχει
απλά οργανικά
μόρια, νερό και
θερμότητα,
δηλαδή τα
συστατικά της
ζωής,
ενώ, έκανε λόγο
και για πιθανές
μελλοντικές
αποστολές που
θα
προσεγγίσουν
το μικρό
φεγγάρι του
Κρόνου. Την
ίδια ώρα, άλλη
έρευνα
που
παρουσιάστηκε
σε άλλο μεγάλο
συνέδριο, του European
Geosciences
Union (EGU), σημειώνει
ότι ο Εγκέλαδος
μπορεί να έχει
πυρήνα
τετηγμένου
πετρώματος, με
θερμοκρασίες
που ξεπερνούν
τους 1.100
βαθμούς
Κελσίου.

ενδείξεις για
ύπαρξη νερού

  Τον Ιούλιο του
2005, ο Cassini
πραγματοποίησ&#\
949; μία θεαματική
πτήση
κοντά στον
Εγκέλαδο, μόλις
173 χλμ. πάνω από
την επιφάνειά
του.

Τότε ήταν που
εξακριβώθηκε
ότι το φεγγάρι
του Κρόνου έχει
ατμόσφαιρα,
και προέκυψαν
ισχυρές
ενδείξεις ότι
τα αέρια που
την αποτελούν
εκλύονται από
ρήγματα στην
επιφάνεια του
πλανήτη, στα
οποία δόθηκε η
ονομασία "tiger stripes"
("ραβδώσεις της
τίγρης").

Στο μεγαλύτερο
ποσοστό τους,
τα αέρια
αποτελούνται
από υδρατμούς,
πράγμα που
αυξάνει τις
πιθανότητες να
βρίσκεται νερό
κάτω από την
παγωμένη
επιφάνεια του
Εγκέλαδου.
