I use lithium batteries they last 10 to 12 months and update much
faster than regular batteries. I was getting 6 months out of standard
Duracells.

Dimitris,

I have added support for the Easyweather.dat file monitoring.

I am expecting that the file format matches this:

The EasyWeather.dat file format

Let me know if it works.

WUHU216_32_B62.zip

Sometimes the console can lose communications if it does not receive
an update from the remote thermo after 5 attempts. I would guess it
attempts a reception every couple of minutes.

Instead of yanking the batteries the next time this happens, try a
console-resync. To do this, simply hold down the + key on the console
until the console beeps twice. It will then attempt to re-establish
communication with the remote thermo.

That is entirely possible. If you are running in wireless mode (no
wire between remote thermo and the console), try moving the console as
far away from the computer (and monitor) as possible.

Ideally, have the back of the console facing the remote thermo, in a
vertical position. The antennas for both the remote thermo and the
WWVB radio signal are just under the backside of the console.

John,

Ideally put your temperature sensor in a shelter called a "radiation
shield". You can buy one or build one yourself. Some add a small fan to
prevent artificially high readings caused from direct sunlight.

In general, try to follow the CWOP standard for mounting your sensors.

Here the guide:

To elaborate, I am running a 2315 and an OS WMR968.  Both units interfeared with each other and the computer interfeared with both of therm.  They're kind of like little kids.  Sometimes you have so separate them and sent them to different corners!  :)

The way I checked mine is I took the manual one in the house and
filled the inside tube full to 1" then slowly pored it into my
sensor. Mine being the WS-2310 it was a little stingy registering
only .60 of an inch but a little spilled to.

Anyways, to make a long story short (I know, it's too late for

is for a La Crosse 2300 with cup anemometer, wired it updates every
9 seconds, and it tracks quite light winds like 0.3 km/h. If your
budget is a little bit higher you can go for La Crosse 3650, in
wireless mode it has 4.5 seconds transmission rate. Don't expect to
work like the really professional weather stations but they keep up
the pace quite well. Avoid any station with fan type anemometer,
they are very slow in tracking the light winds. I have a La Crosse
3600 but I added an Inspeed Vortex wind sensor, the fan anemometer
of LC 3600 is very slow in picking light winds. All the best, Eugen,

Just wanted to say thanks for the great program and introduce myself.
Is this program written in VB6 by chance? If so I would be more than
willing to do some developing if someone can share the API ect with
me. MY station is a WS-2310 I bought used off EBay had to repair all
the sensor cables and build the serial interface cable from scratch.
So if anyone needs help with pin-outs or anything on the WS-2310 feel
free to contact me.

Tom,

Welcome to the group.

The program is written in Visual C++ using MFC.

A couple areas that I would encourage work in:

1) Some type of nice real-time gauges for personal web pages, maybe
using AJAX or .Net. If you know how to do that stuff, let me know.

2) A text based NOAA style text based report generator that using
history files as input. It can be a simple command line program with
no user interface.

That is about all I can think of at the moment.

If you have any other ideas for add-ons or utilities, let me know.

Thanks.

I would realy like to work on a VB6 front end that I could realy go
nuts customising. I have been studying the NWS's servers and data
for going on 6 years now. So if I could figure out how to import the
data into VB6 their wouldnt be any bounderys. I realy dont want to
be stuck acessing the log from Heavy Goof to do it. All I work in is
HTML,XML,JavaScript,VBScript & VB6. But I can even work arrays in
VB6. Been working in it off and on for going on 5 years now. Is
their possibly a MSI DLL we could write a VB6 wrapper for or
something? You know their are more VB6 programmers. It would be real
popular. Not to mention their is lots of custom guage controls under
VB6 at Planet Source Code. What I didnt like was the poor form
control in Heavy Weather. That thing looks like a thrown together
mess. I did start a mod of my XML NWS feed reader for my Underground
feed. Check it out here:
http://www.tas-independent-programming.com/LiveWXUnderground.htm

It still has a lot of info feilds missing. But their is enough code
to serve as a basic example. Its running thru a PHP proxy server so
their isnt any browser securety issue.

You asked about needed features. Using WUHU with the WS-2310 I
noticed the XML feed coming from my uploaded station data at
Underground was missing the data from the windchill_string field. I
tried using the tweak even and still couldn't get any data to post
for windchill. I also tossed this code together for the Underground
station chart last night. Its real basic but I figured I would share
it with you and the group.

<script language="JavaScript">
d = new Date();
var mday = d.getDate();
var myear = d.getFullYear();
var mmonth = d.getMonth() + 1;
document.writeln('<img src="http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-
bin/wxStationGraphAll?
day='+mday+'&year='+myear+'&month='+mmonth+'&ID=KAZAPACH11&type=3&wid
th=500&showtemp=1&showpressure=1&showwind=1&showwinddir=1&showrain=1"
  alt="KAZAPACH11 Weather Graph" id="wxHistoryImage" />')
</script>

I cannot recall why I pulled windchill from the string.

We can re-enable it and see.

As far as a DLL goes, I am sure we could do something.

If you can use VB to read binary files, I can supply the file format.

Or yo can contact your local NWS office and see if they have any old
shelters available. I was able to one free from the NWS. They replaced
the old shelters with modern equipment and no longer needed the
shelters. A little scraping and paint and a set of legs and it will be
good to go.

I have a WS-2308 operating in wireless mode. The desktop computer
is on an old computer stand underneath the console. The CPU is on the
bottom of the stand and the monitor is on top of the stand. The monitor
is off to the side, as much as possible, so the heat does not go up to
the console. The computer transmits the wx data to the router
wirelessly from antenna on top of the monitor. I have not had any
problem with interference. The only problem was when the computer
rebooted the other day while I was out of town and Heavt Weather and
WUHU did not start.

Thats not a bad idea concidering I have to have this program running.
Would still like to have DLL capabilitys to. Let me know what you
figure out about the wind string.

My guess is a faulty driver that handles the USB to serial adapter.

USB to serial adapters are for the most part unreliable due to either
bad hardware design or more likely, bad Windows drivers that they have
created for the operating system.

You can check with the manufacturer to see if they have updated their
driver.

The other option is to purchase one that is known to work well.

Subject: HW Pro and HW Beta 2.0 history file formats for programmers.
wuhu_software
Send Email Send Email

Here is the format of the history.dat file that is output by WUHU. This
matches the file format output by the Heavyweather Pro application. The
HW Pro application supports WS-36XX stations. We use the HW Pro
application to graph the history files output by WUHU.

This format was chosen because it contains more fields than the old HW
Beta 2.0 format.

New records are added to the end of the file, there is no header or
trailing record.

The [X] field denotes the number of bytes in the field.

00      Double [8]  Timestamp          days from 12/30/1899 00:00:00
(GMT)
08 Float [4] Abs Pressure hectopascals (millibars)
12 Float [4] Relative Pressure hectopascals (millibars)
16      Float  [4]  Wind Speed         meters/second
20 ULong [4] Wind Direction see below
24      Float  [4]  Wind Gust          meters/second
28 Float [4] Total Rainfall millimeters
32 Float [4] New Rainfall millimeters
36 Float [4] Indoor Temp celsius
40 Float [4] Outdoor Temp celsius
44      Float  [4]  Indoor Humidity    %
48      Float  [4]  Outdoor Humidity   %
52    ULong  [4]  unknown            - (Value is always 0)

Wind Direction

Wind direction is encoded as an integer between 0 and 15. To get the
wind direction in degrees, multiply the value by 22.5. To get compass
directions (moving clockwise) 0 is North, 1 is North-Northeast, 2 is
Northeast, etc...

   0  N
   1  NNE
   2  NE
   3  ENE
   4  E
   5  ESE
   6  SE
   7  SSE
   8  S
   9  SSW
10  SW
11  WSW

C data structure that mimics this format:

struct WeatherRecord3600 {
    double fTimeStamp;
    float fOutdoorAbsolutePressure;
    float fOutdoorRelativePressure;
    float fOutdoorWindSpeed;
    unsigned long ulOutdoorWindDirection;
    float fOutdoorWindGust;
    float fOutdoorTotalRainfall;
    float fOutdoorNewRainfall;
    float fIndoorTemperature;
    float fOutdoorTemperature;
    float fIndoorHumidity;
    float fOutdoorHumidity;
    unsigned long ulUnknown;
};

The fTimeStamp is an odd field. It represents the days since a epoch
time (12/30/1899 00:00:00) in UTC local time. The fractional part is
used to obtain hours, minutes, and seconds. There are a few functions
that are needed to convert back and forth between that timestamp format
and the normal local time format, they are given below.

To convert from a normal time_t to this format you would use:

time_t t;
WeatherRecord3600 wr3600;

wr3600.fTimeStamp=Convert_time_t_To_DateTime2(ConvertLocalToUTCLocal(t))\
;

To convert from this odd timestamp to a time_t:

t=ConvertUTCLocalToLocal(Convert_DateTime2_To_time_t(wr3600.fTimeStamp))\
;

-----------------------

double Convert_time_t_To_DateTime2(time_t vtime_t)

{
    double fresult;
    // 25569 days from Saturday, December 30, 1899 to Sunday, January 1,
1970 (where time_t seconds counts from)
    double fDeltaDays = 25569 + (vtime_t / (60 * 60 * 24));
    double fFractionDays = (vtime_t % (60 * 60 * 24)) / (double)(60 * 60 *
24);
    fresult = fDeltaDays+fFractionDays;
    return (fresult);
}

//----

time_t Convert_DateTime2_To_time_t(double fTime)

{
    return (time_t)((fTime - 25569.0) * 86400.0);
}

    // If daylight saving time in effect, subtract an hour.
    if (tm_localtime.tm_isdst)
      t1 -= 60*60;

    return(t1);
}

//----

{
    // Aquire a local time and a gmt time.
    struct tm tm_localtime;

    if (tm_localtime.tm_isdst)
      t1 += 60*60;

    return(t1);
}

---------------------------------

For completeness sake, here is the HW Beta 2.0 format. As you can see
the data set is not complete. There is for example no relative pressure.
That would have to be determined by either reading the relative pressure
from the console or by prompting the user for an offset from the abolute
pressure.

receive the WWVB time sync.
You need to use the console set up and change dst to off.
If you just change the time back an hour it messes up some time code.
I don't remember where it showed up, but it did one year before I
found out what the dst meant. LOL

Wow that's a great idea. On the same vein, does anybody know if the NWS ever sells off old equipment? I sent out an email asking my local station if they did, but I wanted to see if anybody here had any experience with it.

Or yo can contact your local NWS office and see if they have any old
shelters available. I was able to one free from the NWS. They replaced
the old shelters with modern equipment and no longer needed the
shelters. A little scraping and paint and a set of legs and it will be
good to go.

USB to serial adapters are for the most part unreliable due to either
bad hardware design or more likely, bad Windows drivers that they have
created for the operating system.

You can check with the manufacturer to see if they have updated their
driver.

The other option is to purchase one that is known to work well.

I use lithium batteries they last 10 to 12 months and update much
faster than regular batteries. I was getting 6 months out of standard
Duracells.
