Shaun from WU replied to me with the format his server expects to
get and this includes the UTC date time stamp so he could not see
any probems with sending 'historical' data up (presumably in the
correct order rather than randomly).

Sample line (its a formed URL)

/weatherstation/updateweatherstation.php?
ID=stationID&PASSWORD=password&dateutc=2005-01-28+05%3A41%
3A38&winddir=174&windspeedmph=33.0&windgustmph=40.0&tempf=40.80&raini
n=0.00&baro
min=30.24&dewptf=35.12&humidity=80&weather=&clouds=CLR&softwaretype=t
ype
&action=updateraw

Note that for '+05%3A41%3A38', the + means UTC is ahead of the
station's time, 05 is the UTC hour, 41 is the UTC minutes and 38 is
the UTC seconds.

I think the rest is pretty self explainatory.

Cheers

David

Mike,

I may have found the problem.

If an update was received from Heavyweather, and the fields were
completely bogus (fields will contain OFL or -999.0), and it was time
to upload (minimum upload time period expired), it might have been
possible that WUHU uploaded the garbage data.

I made a new version, 130, available at the alternative download site.

Please install and let me know if this version addresses the problem.

Thanks.

Well I just tried the update data URL with some historical data and
each request received a 'Success' response so looks like I'll be
building a small app that will read history.dat and transfer it line
by line to weather underground. I'll do this daily so I dont;' have
to rely being online all the time.

Is anyone else interested in this?

David,

Let us know how it works out.

What did you write it in? VB?

Thanks.

Yes - it will be written in VB.

It will probably have to wait a while as my new unit appears to be
somewhat defective (WS2308 - reports my station air pressure some
430 hPa lower than it should be AND says that the air pressure
outside my house is 11 hPa lower than inside my house) It makes me
wonder what other readings might be in error!

At least LaCrosse admit that the unit appears to be defective - now
all I have to do is convince the supplier and get a replacement!

Cheers

Well I'm stumped already (I did say my skills were somewhat limited).
I have VB 6 and cannot make heads or tails of opening and reading a
Binary file like History.dat. Can anyone shed some light? (I do have
the fiel format)

Dave,

Sorry, I am a C/C++ programmer. I have never really spent any time
with VB.

I have a friend who is a VB programmer, maybe they can help.

Any VB programmers here?

Thanks.

Well history has a 'save as text' function so I can always do that
first then read the resultant file.

Interesting that Heavyweather doesn't give you access to the history
unless you are connected to your weather station!

If you have a chunck of C/C++ code (that does not use pointers) that
reads histroy.dat then I can probably decipher it!

Well oddly enough I couldn't do it with VB 6 but I could do the read
with VB.net!!!!

Anyway, I have (I think) successfully extracted the data but need some
way of interpreting the float values. For example I extract the
following:

680153154 = 514.50 hpa Air Pressure
656214392 = 11.91 mm Rainfall
656214392205 = 19.10 deg C Indoor Temp
65156204205 = 19.60 deg C Outdoor Temp

Also, Can anyone point me to an algorythm to add seconds to 00:00:00
01/01/1900 GMT to get actual time?

65152204205 = 19.10 deg C (66.38 f) Indoor Temp**

AND, just in case it helps to have the byte values separated:

68 0 153 154
65 62 143 92
65 152 204 205
65 156 204 205

OK - I've nutted out the binary to float conversion for VB. Just
need to work out an easy method of adding x trillion seconds to
00:00:00 01/01/1900 to get the correct date and time.

David,

Found some info here that may help:
http://www.codeguru.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-12573.html

a time_t value is a long (32 bit) that represents the number of
seconds since 1/1/1970.

Thus, you can convert it to a VB date:

' read yourLongValue from the file
dim epoch as date
epoch = #1/1/1970#
msgbox dateadd("s", yourLongValue,epoch)

Therefore, I think you can just change the 1/1/1970 to 1/1/1900.

The dateadd function should take care of all of the details.

I am not sure, but I think TimeValue may return the time of day from
the result of dateadd.

Good luck.

---

Here is an example of how to perform the calculations in C where
time_t is a 32 bit integer representing the seconds since 1/1/1970
(native C time format).

#define SECONDSPERMINUTE (cyg_uint32)60
#define SECONDSPERHOUR   (cyg_uint32)(SECONDSPERMINUTE * 60)
#define SECONDSPERDAY    (cyg_uint32)(SECONDSPERHOUR * 24)
#define SECONDSPERYEAR   (cyg_uint32)(SECONDSPERDAY * 365)

/* Convert a SNTP timestamp to a time_t. timestamps are seconds from
    1/1/1900. time_t is 1/1/1970. That equates to 70 years, or which
    17 were leap years.*/

static time_t timestamp2time(cyg_uint32 timestamp) {

   return timestamp -
     (SECONDSPERYEAR *  (cyg_uint32)(70)) -
     (SECONDSPERDAY * (cyg_uint32)(17));
}

LOL,

I wished I knew that yesterday. Just finished writting a page of
code (using an algotithm I found in Meeus Astronomical Algorithms)
to work it out the hard way :-) The Help/Search engine with VB.net
isn't as good as it used to be unless you knwo exactly what you are
looking for - which sort of defeats the purpose!

I have the code working spitting out correctly formed URL's. All I
need to do no is convert my metric values to Imperial then work out
how to send the URL's (should be second nature for .net) and read
the response.

So far, so good. I'm on my third day with no zeroes after installing
wuhu version 130. I had been having errors at least every other day
prior to installing this version. Looks like it may be fixed. Of
course, I'm expecting the kiss of death having now said something,
they'll probably be back in the morning. Hope not, but for now, looks
great.

Much Appreciated

Mike,

Thanks for the update.

If you find any more anomalies in the upload data (or any other
malfunction) please let me know.

No biggy, but it was me, ScottE, who sent that last reply, sorry to
have butted in, but I had been following the thread since, I too, had
reported the same problem a couple of weeks ago now.

I will definitely keep you and the group informed if I encounter any
further problems, but the data is still looking great now.

I'm sure you solved a lot of people's problems with the version 130
update.

THANK AGAIN,
ScottE

Scotte,

Thanks for the correction.

I made a 131 version today.

I found a bad dewpoint temp in my own upload data, so added code to
catch it.

I also added retry logic to Weather Underground uploads. I noticed
that they fail occasionally. Maybe overloaded servers, I am not sure.

In any case, thanks for helping with the bug corrections.

Well I'm stumped already (I did say my skills were somewhat limited).
I have VB 6 and cannot make heads or tails of opening and reading a
Binary file like History.dat. Can anyone shed some light? (I do have
the fiel format)

I upgraded to version 130 a week ago, and just switched to 131 this
evening. During the last week I haven't experienced any erroneous
uploads, so it appears my problem has been corrected. I'll keep you
posted if anything changes.

Miguel,

The latest releases have a few enhancements to mask the bad data
received from the stations on occasion. I believe most of the bad
readings are due to the cabling (I have yet to make a shielded cable
myself).

The current release version is 131. It is available from the
alternative website given on the home page of the group.

I would definetly recommend updating to the latest version if you are
using versions less than 130.

Well, something went hywire because normaly after installing the
program it will transmitt the information and its not doing so... I
went to the findu and it says since 2 days ago no data transmission..

I do not know if the lastest microsoft patch is causing this...

I am guessing that you have not been uploading for a while.

Is Heavyweather running?

Miguel,

You may want to make a batch file to start Heavyweather on startup. I
created a batch file called "StartHeavyWeather.cmd" using notepad.

The contents of this file is:

@echo off
start /SEPARATE /BELOWNORMAL "" "heavy weather.exe"

I place this cmd file in the HeavyWeather directory, then add it to
the startup folder.

This will start Heavyweather with a below normal priority (since it
is a CPU hog). This frees up the CPU for other processes.
