Did anyone feel the Earthquake today at about 1:50pm today?

I was on a 5th floor in a building near Detroit and felt it quite a bit. I
thought I was having stroke or something at first. About 30 mins later the news
article was posted on news.yahoo.com.

I live in the Triad area of NC and the reports vary quite a bit.  My wife and I didn't feel a thing at our house, but my dad who lives about 3 miles away (the way the crow flies) called in a panic right after it happened asking if we felt it.

My brother-in-law's wife felt it down in Wilmington, NC.  Friends in the RDU (Raleigh) area are reporting having felt it while others didn't feel it.

Geography is quite interesting in how it carried the seismic activity with this one!

I used to live in Mountain View, CA south of San Francisco, when the Loma Prieta Earthquake hit; the shaking started, and just seemed to NEVER stop; result was the 7.1 or 7.2 earthquake, along with hundreds of big aftershocks.  A local television station was broadcasting from Los Gatos, going more towards the epicenter, and I witnessed an aftershock on tv and felt it myself around 15 seconds later.  Earthquakes can affect people and land in strange fashion.  I am glad that I did NOT feel this quake, as I have no urge to be reaquainted to their effects.  Best to all in its area of effect, and hoping no one is hurt or killed.

I Live in north eastern Maryland and was on the second floor of an office building and felt it quite a bit, not sure how it ranks on the scale but the building felt like it may fall at times since I have never been through it before. would say it was moving a few inches side to side and up and down, really amazing.

Hope everyone else fared equally as well, since I had no damage.

I have been running WUHU with my Lacrosse WS-2310 for years. I have been pushing
my data to several sites with no problems. I went on vacation a few weeks ago
and while I was gone, data stopped transmitting. When I returned, the station
appeared normal but WUHU was not getting any data from the console. I have
tried updates to the software, changed batteries restarted everything but I
continue to get the following:

Tue Aug 23 19:47:52 2011 > Opened serial port COM1 successfully.
Tue Aug 23 19:50:38 2011 > Communication failure: Could not retrieve the
console's clock value.

The console clock/date are correct as is the computer's. Any suggestions?

Were you running it wired mode? If so, was there lightning in the area at the
time it stopped? It is possible that the console or your serial port is toast if
this is the case.

Try connecting to a different serial port and see if you have communications.

I had this happen, it toasted the RS-232 circuit on the console so it would no
longer communicate with the PC. Had to replace the console.

Yes, it was in wired mode and there was severe weather in the area. I was not
home at the time, but I have suspected that there were some close lightning
strikes.

I will try a different computer since the one I have been using only has one
serial port.

I also opened the console to see if there were any scorch marks, blown
capicitors or anything like that and everything looked good.

I'll do some more investigating and report back.

Thanks!

Kari, Many of us have suffered losses from lightning. I was fortunate and only
lost my serial port on my computer due to near by lightning strikes.
Hope your damage is not too severe.

Hi

Before you proceed changing the wired, try to reset your console by pressing pressure and wind buttoms,  then put the consol close to the thermo hygro and wait 15m to receive the signal then connect to WUHU

best

I have had some success by unplugging the console and taking all the batteries
out of everything. Let it set that way for at least 24 hours. This is known as
a hard reset. There are a couple of times I have done this and it has got my
station (2315) going again. Good luck!

Yes, WeatherUnderground has some awesome tools for us to play with.
I am using many of their tools to keep a close eye on Irene.

You ought to see how these aviators party after they get back from a mission ... I was stationed at Keesler (Home of the Hurricane Hunters) and I'm here to tell you, they KNOW how to party !!!

Who can blame them...that is a very stressful job to have, would be neat to take the flight once but not sure I would want to keep doing it.

A Checksum is something that travels with data from remote sensors to make sure
that the data is not corrupt. Here is more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checksum

If you do not check "Show Console Com. Errors" in the log window you will not
see all the details of console communication.

So it turns out that the serial port on the computer died. I hooked up to a different computer and I am back in business.

Thanks for all the help and comments!

I have had some success by unplugging the console and taking all the batteries out of everything. Let it set that way for at least 24 hours. This is known as a hard reset. There are a couple of times I have done this and it has got my station (2315) going again. Good luck!

You might think about getting a serial surge protector for your computer. Also,
since I lost my serial port I Go wireless whenever there is a possibility of
lightning.

There is a cool app called Scanner Radio by Gordon Edwards that will allow you
to not only listen to your local police and fire from your phone but also
supports direct streaming from the Weather Underground weather radios. Pretty
cool.

The Pro version has a few nice features for a whopping $3. The free version
works well and is worth checking out if you own an Android.

Good Day,

I'm looking to replace my La Crosse WS2310 with an OS WMR100N. Getting
a little frustrated at the failure to report the rain totals.

If anyone has experience with the WMR100N unit, I'd appreciate all
comments - positive or negative.

Thanks in advance.
