I didn't realize you were commenting on the original thread Mark.

Yeah I've never been a big fan of the Weatherbug app either but I do send my data there.

Don,

I'm not on WeatherBug. Just a personal preference. As a computer tech, for years I was taking that off people's PCs. I had heard (rightly or wrongly at the time) that it was low-level spyware. At the very least, on corporate networks, it was utilizing bandwidth which, back in those days, was a precious commodity. So I've never been a fan.

In this instance, he was reporting to WeatherBug what he station was recording, so it seemed like an recording error rather than a reporting one. I hope my suggestion helps.

P.S. Since you asked, I'll start a new thread on the topic of weather services. I've stuck with WU alone since I installed my station.

Your station looks fine on Weather Underground. What is your ID (or station location) for WeatherBug?

Hi everyone,

I'm seeing a Pressure issue with someone trying to send data to us using WUHU. He's using a Lacrosse Station. Can you guys assist? I've attached the conversation below.

Thanks!

Hi,

Newbie here.

Poked around with the WUHU uploader. I didn't see any discrepancy between the Lacrosse weather station Heavy Weather SW, the WUHU uploaders and the LCD on the wall WRT to pressure. Nor any setting to adjust altitude that might come in to play if it matters that we are ~4600 ft in elevation.

Summary: Feels to me that this side is sending (says it sending) 25.47 for pressure but Weather bug is echoing/reporting back a different value of Er::25.5270588235294

Does weatherbug have other PWS (lacrosse) working with WUHU uploaders?

Hi,

More than 3 days, still not seeing our PWS weather data on weatherbug page nor on the upload-data-confirmation-test-url page.

Can you see any easy fix?

Having finally posted to the group after having my Lacrosse WS-2813U-IT for a year, I was wondering what you meteorologists think of the various WUHU weather services. I signed on with Weather Underground and have been pretty happy with them both on my PC (despite the new screen layout) and Android (which doesn’t seem to update automatically). Is there a reason to sign up with WeatherBug, PWSWeather, AWEKAS and CWOP?

I was a weather geek in junior high and remember a lot of what I read, forgot a lot, too, but still consider myself fairly weather-technical if that makes a difference.

I have had my LaCrosse 2308 for about 8 years and posting to the web via WUHU for about 7 years.

I have the data posted to all the sites available through WUHU.  I figure that the more sites it is posted to the more people might use it.  That could be someone coming to visit a friend or relative in town or someone who might be moving to town.  Or maybe it might be the NWS to modify their forecasts and models or a university doing research.  One of the local real estate offices has a link to WU for local weather.

Mark, if you are in junior high and interested in weather, due well in your math courses.  The math is the foundation to getting a degree in meteorology.  If you would like to learn more on the practical use of weather, get in touch with a local hot air balloon pilot.  Balloons are more sensitive to small weather changes than most other aircraft and pilots are always looking for crew people.

Bob,

Uh, no. I _was_ in junior high ... almost 50 years ago. But the advice is good

Mark, it is really just a matter of preference. I do WU, CWOP & AWEKAS. The CWOP
is good if you are interested in comparing your site to others in your area if
you sign up for the Quality Checks. If you do, do not try to chase the results,
watch it over time and see if there are good comparisons for you as micro
climates have a big influence. Is good though to watch for trends in your data.

Hi

I've been running a LC 2308AL since early 01/2008 and joined WUHU on 01/16/2008
and I've learned a great deal by lurking and reading so thank you all.

As with any other piece of equipment the time may have come for an up-grade: the
wind speed detection has become very flaky; the rain gauge is suspect at best;
about 3 years ago the batteries leaked in the main station but after a thorough
cleaning I got it back online.  I use a ten year old E-Machine laptop, behind a
physical router, running fully patched Win-XP as a dedicated server to
WeatherUnderground and CWOP,  I started searching for a replacement wind
speed/direction unit and a new rain gauge but finding them from a reliable
source seems to be a bit problematic.

I trust the groups input so any suggestions of either a source for replacement
parts or a new station would be welcome.  My station budget is in the $150.00 to
$300.00 (US) range.

Thanks again for 5 years of knowledge.

Can anyone tell me how to generate an action at or near midnight to execute a
script file in WUHU.

Here is what I am currently doing:

I execute a script file to capture memory variables (extreme daily temp, wind
chill, highs, lows and rainfall, wind gust, etc for that day) but I am using the
weather update action in WUHU, so I write this data on every update and then use
sendmail to delivery the data as an email message at or @ 11:59 PM. The problem
is that this is very write intensive, so if I could, within WUHU, generate an
interupt (or action) just before midnight, I can greatly reduce the CPU/program
overhead and save my usb stick some wear and tear.

Maybe there is a better way to scrounge this data, but I am not aware of it.

I am new to the Yahoo group so if someone has already been here and done this, I
would appreciate the help.

For the heck of it, you might try contacting La Crosse directly.

http://www.lacrossetechnologyoutlet.com/parts

The parts list does not seem to show much. Not sure what is going on there. I
would fire off an email to them.

It might be worth saving the station if all you need is a new anemometer and a
rain bucket.

I see they sell reconditioned stations as well.

What exactly are you trying to do? Just have an email sent to you at midnight

I have had my 2308 running since 2006. I have replaced the wind sensor once
(with one with cups instead of the fan style, and replace the rain sensor twice.
The site I bought them from (lacrossetechnologyoutlet) does not list them as
available now. You might try to Google the actual part number on the sensor. I
think that is how I replace the first sensor.

I have about the same budget for a replacement station (next time this one goes
down) and I have settled on the Davis Vantage Vue. Ambient has them now for
about 280 plus 110 for the data logger. About 100 more than what I want to
spend but.....

I used to have a 2310 that I kept going for a while before I bought a Davis WS.  The cheapest way I kept mine working was to go to the Great Big Outlet (it’s now http://www.lacrossetechnologyoutlet.com/) and buy a second WS to use for parts.  You might try that – unless you do what I did, buy a Davis.  I have not had to replace a part in 6 years.  Smile

I have had my 2308 running since 2006. I have replaced the wind sensor once (with one with cups instead of the fan style, and replace the rain sensor twice. The site I bought them from (lacrossetechnologyoutlet) does not list them as available now. You might try to Google the actual part number on the sensor. I think that is how I replace the first sensor.

I have about the same budget for a replacement station (next time this one goes down) and I have settled on the Davis Vantage Vue. Ambient has them now for about 280 plus 110 for the data logger. About 100 more than what I want to spend but.....

Here is the deal. Using internal memory variables and action/batch files,
I have successfully sent myself an email every night for the last two months
with an attachment that contains the following information (example):

Time Hack: Wed Jan 02 23:54:23 2013

Daily extremes low outdoor temperature= 38.9
Daily extremes low outdoor temperature time 10:34:22 PM

Daily extremes high outdoor temperature= 44.2
Daily extremes high outdoor temperature time 12:14:57 AM

Daily extreme low outdoor Wind Chill= 34.0
Daily extreme low outdoor Wind Chill time 03:27:57 AM

Max Wind Gust= 25.9 MPH
Daily Max Win Direction was from the N at 01:26:57

Daily extreme Rain Fall= 0.00 Inches at 23:54:22
Hourly Rain Fall= 0.00 inch(s)

Daily RainFall= 0.00
24 hr outdoor rain fall = 0.00 inch(s)

Total Rain Fall = 13.97 inches since 08-10-2012

(End of file)

The method that I use to obtain this data is to write the necessary memory
variables each time that there is an update and that means writing all that
data over and over and then using the Windows scheduler to execute a
sendmail batch file and attach this data to the email just before midnight
each day. The daily extremes start over at midnight for the next day and
"adjust" all day till midnight. Basically what I am doing is a very sloppy
way to do business...I thought maybe a time mask or batch file, perhaps
there is a time interrupt scheme or some other ingenious method within WUHU
would allow me to only write the memory variables one time very near
midnight and allow me to capture all of the "extremes" of the day.

I guess I just like to have a bunch of "useless data", but I find this data
interesting.

73,
Bob

There is a way to process a script using something called time limiters. It is
too early in the morning for to recall the details on the syntax so have a look
at the online manual. If you have any questions let us know. I believe that is
all that you would need with your existing setup.

I would create a separate action file that is used with the time limiter since
you are probably doing more than just processing a single template at the
desired time.

The only caveat with time limiters is that they work best with station types
that are sure to receive a complete update each minute.

John:

Thanks! I think this is what I am looking for...now I just need to try it
out! I may move the email out of the windows scheduler, but this solution
will probably solve my problem.
Maybe something like: time(23:53,23:59,@1 ):daily_extreme_to_file.bat
should reduce my write on update down to a few minutes instead of the 24/7
that I am currently doing.

I will let you know how it works after the implementation and testing.

Friends, I'm having the following error: "Commincation error or invalid/corrupt
data retrieved from console." repeating about every 8 seconds for 7 entries.
This is followed by a COM port re-open attempt (successful)and then the
commincation errors, repeating in a continuous cycle.

I can stop and restart WUHU services, which seems to clear the error for about 4
minutes, and then the error cycle begins again.

I'm connected to a LaCrosse WS-2310 station, that seems to be working correctly.

Any advice on where to begin troubleshooting?

Thanks in advance,

DGB

Can you establish communication with HeavyWeather? Beware that both software
applications cannot communicate with the station at the same time. You have to
choose one or the other.

I'm only running WUHU; I haven't used Heavy Weather for several years. Are you
suggesting that I try using Heavy Weather to see if it works correctly?

By the way, the LaCrosse base station seems to be working and displaying just
fine.

I was thinking I might try uninstalling WUHU and reinstalling.

Thoughts?

Greetings to the group,

I recently decided to relegate the task of uploading my weather data from WUHU
to APRS over amateur radio. My radio gear has been gathering dust in the last
few years and I really wanted to get the weather station off my computer
(actually, a succession of computers!) for a long time.

For those of you who use the same computer daily for personal use and weather
station duty, you probably know what I mean. Installing and uninstalling
software become more than just a chore when weather station data has to be
stopped and then restarted.

Anyway, I made the transition a couple of nights ago after notifying the NOAA
people of my change, enlisting the help of a local NWS employee, and monitoring
my system to make sure that my data is flowing through the local internet gate
(IGATE) to aprs.fi, mesowest, and findu.com. I emailed Weather Underground,
asking for a new station ID so that it could be chosen from their drop down menu
for my town; with a name that matches the other local APRS stations, like
"APRSWXNET Coalinga".

I have not heard from WU and have not seen my station data, as of this moment.
My station hasn't moved, or changed in any way... just the method of delivery.
My CWOP designation changed from CW2610 to C2610 for MADIS, but otherwise
everything is the same. The local NWS people have my data and are happy, but WU
has dropped the ball!

I live in a tiny town with no other source of weather data, and lots of locals
watch my station data on WU daily. Thankfully, they haven't emailed me, or
accosted me at the store, when the system has been down in the past, but this
outage may make them crazy.... LOL. I may have to don my flameproof johns to get
breakfast at the local greasy spoon from now on.

Any suggestions as to how I might proceed? Anyone know of a contact person at
WU that I can call or email, to straighten this out?

TIA,
Phil

Greetings to the group,

I recently decided to relegate the task of uploading my weather data from WUHU to APRS over amateur radio. My radio gear has been gathering dust in the last few years and I really wanted to get the weather station off my computer (actually, a succession of computers!) for a long time.

For those of you who use the same computer daily for personal use and weather station duty, you probably know what I mean. Installing and uninstalling software become more than just a chore when weather station data has to be stopped and then restarted.

Anyway, I made the transition a couple of nights ago after notifying the NOAA people of my change, enlisting the help of a local NWS employee, and monitoring my system to make sure that my data is flowing through the local internet gate (IGATE) to aprs.fi, mesowest, and findu.com. I emailed Weather Underground, asking for a new station ID so that it could be chosen from their drop down menu for my town; with a name that matches the other local APRS stations, like "APRSWXNET Coalinga".

I have not heard from WU and have not seen my station data, as of this moment. My station hasn't moved, or changed in any way... just the method of delivery. My CWOP designation changed from CW2610 to C2610 for MADIS, but otherwise everything is the same. The local NWS people have my data and are happy, but WU has dropped the ball!

I live in a tiny town with no other source of weather data, and lots of locals watch my station data on WU daily. Thankfully, they haven't emailed me, or accosted me at the store, when the system has been down in the past, but this outage may make them crazy.... LOL. I may have to don my flameproof johns to get breakfast at the local greasy spoon from now on.

Any suggestions as to how I might proceed? Anyone know of a contact person at WU that I can call or email, to straighten this out?

TIA,
Phil

I think I've had this happen to my 2315 but it's been a while.

Have you made any changes to your computer lately? Installed new programs? Is
the clock on the console the same as the computer? The date?

I believe I've cured mine by taking the batteries out of the console and
unplugging it from the wall and let it sit for 24 hours (A hard reset). It
wouldn't hurt to try.

It might be WUHU, but it's probably the console. I'd try that first.

Good luck and keep us informed. :)

You might try Heavyweather just to see if it can get any data.

What might have happened, if there was lightning in your area, and you are in wired mode, that the RS-232 interface on the console is fried. It happened to me once as well. The console can be swapped out for a new one and the sensors are probably Ok if this is what happened to you.

Did you have lightning in the area when it last worked?

That happened to me several years ago as well, except it fried the serial card in my computer too.  Luckily the spike wasn’t enough to kill the computer.

Thanks, everyone for these suggestions. My station is using wireless connection
to the outside sensors. No lighting involved.

I have changed batteries in both the sensor, and the base station, and unplugged
the base station as well, although not for 24 hours. I will try that today.

Data is is showing in all windows all the time on both the base console and the
computer interface. The corrupt data error is no longer happening, however, the
log now shows a constant error polling for each sensor, one at a time, over and
over, continuously. That's obviously taking up a lot of processor time on my
PC.

When I graph the data, the data indicates a "flat line" of the few seconds of
error, and then the correct data point, and then another flat line, also
repeating over and over. The data is being read for each sensor, eventually.
WUHU is dutifully uploading the data to Weather Underground and also shows up on
the web page.

As I said, I'll try unplugging and removing batteries for the base station for
24 hours. I can also post a data log if you'd like to see the repeating error
messages.

Thanks again,

DGB

If you have "Show Console Com. Errors" checked in the log screen, un-check that
and it will probably not show the polling of data.

With wireless mode, the console will only collect new data once a minute (or
more) depending on the wind speed outdoors.

In wired mode, it is more like every 7 seconds. That is why we take the risk
with lightning strikes taking out the console, serial port, or worse.

I have had the base unit uplugged for 24 hours; I have it now restarted and
updating the date, but not yet connected to the serial port. I'll let you know
the results later today.

It seems like there was a setting possible to make the base unit poll the
sensors more frequently in wiresless mode. Is true?
