Are you sure the gauge is free of debris?

I checked mine recently after a zero rainfall report and sure enough
it was plugged up.

I have a 2310 and I do believe that each tip of the bucket is .02. SO
I would not get a .03 reading.
Was it in Heavyweather that you saw the reading and not WU.
Just to add to my Duh's as Mark would be so quick to point out. I have
mixed up the hourly rainfall with the total rainfall on the WU report.
I have also had times when spider webs would stop the rain bucket from
tipping. Those spider webs are strong, same thing with the wind
sensor. Every so often, when I think of it, I spray around each of
them to keep the bugs out.

I had a zero one time and cleaned some spider webs out.  But the low readings continued after that.

I checked mine--there was a little dirt--and a little spider web not attached--I cleaned it thoroughly--and tested it--it tripped 27 times and HeavyWeather showed .73 and WU showed .81.  Would have thought the 4 oz of water I used in the test would have shown at least an inch or two. As you can tell, I did dribble the water in to cause it to trip 27 times.  Thanks for all the comments.  I'm checking with LaCrosse ito see if they have any suggestions.

Deborah,
I would really like to do it, but the part about being in good
physical shape may be a stopper. I do walk a lot, but I don't do any
mountain climbing.
I live only about 60 Miles as the crow flies, not counting the "up"
part, but windy roads to get there, a bit over 2 hours.

The registration starts in August, I might just go there this summer
and see waht they say.

Alrighty ... I've run across a slight hitch on the radio broadcasts. At least with mine. It's a Midland 74-200, purchased about 3 yrs ago.

When there's an alert issued, the radio will do it's thing and sound the alarm (tones via the broadcast), announce the info, then turn off the sound after about an hour. The light and display remain on for the duration of the watch/warning, but the actual sound will turn off. I noticed it this week when Tulsa ran the weekly test, and it reminded me how it works during watches/warnings. I've combed through the manual, and apparently there's not a work-around.

When I came across the test this week, I noted that Oddcast said it was connected but the bars were absent. When I went to check the actual transmission, indeed the sound was not there. It was still listed on the website, but only had dead air. Of course, when I pressed the button to initiate the sound again, it resumed broadcasting. (Which, I think I mentioned before, is the reason I originally thought the line-in didn't work. DUH!)

Guess I'll have to make sure I'm around to keep the broadcast going during times of inclement weather.  :-)

Deborah,
That is strange. So when you press the button to listen to the
broadcast it stays on for listening, however if you receive an alert,
it shuts off the broadcast after a certain amount of time?
I found the manual on-line and I agree it does not address this issue,
it even states the button to push for continious listening.
My radio does not work like yours, when on continious broadcast it
stays on even after an alert.

Your correct. I've had it on continuously since we started the broadcasting, and came across the situation during the weekly test. It was then I remembered that it will turn off in about an hour after the tones come across. I've had it on during weather events, if only to keep it from sounding the siren as to not wake the little people, and it does go off by itself. It wasn't the cheapest model on the shelf when I bought it, but it was surely not on the high end either. Maybe I can look in to getting a different one down the line. But my concern is that it may happen to others, and it is a factor to consider in the efforts we are trying to achieve here.

It's really not a big issue, unless I'm not here during weather events. Which is a valid possibility at times. Like during the weekly test this week.  :-)

I guess ti's sort of like everything else - the grass is greener on the other side. Since I've only lived in the south, I'd LOVE to experience a real winter. And yes, I'd give this a go if I could get away with it. Since I've been tagged disabled, there's no way they'd even consider me a candidate. So I guess I'll have to settle for a more normal type of winter some day, when I can arrange to live in the north for one winter.

Deborah,

I am wondering if there is a way to turn off the SAME alerts as a
test.

Do you have it currently configured to accept all alerts?

If you disable the SAME alerts, it should not turn off the radio
after one as been activated.

I know this defeats the purpose of the SAME radio, but it would be
worth knowing.

Thanks.

I am not sure, but .81 / 27 = .03 in per tip.

The manual states a 1mm resolution. (0.0394 In).

It is possible that your test was correct.

I am not sure if 4 oz should have produced an inch or two. You have
to calculate the surface area of the rain collector then in turn a
volume calculation.

It may prove to be accurate.

I will dig up an old post I did on the calculations. It is in a
message somewhere in the group.

Will check it out tomorrow.

Interesting thought. I'll check it out and see what happens. May take another week - until the next test - unless the rain and thundershowers forecasted for the beginning of the week spark an alert. Maybe if I give Tulsa NOAA a call and ask them real nice, they'd do a test tomorrow afternoon.  :-)

Will let you know what I find out. About the settings, not the NOAA request. :-)

Dickie,

I did a google for oddcast and linux and found this page:

http://www.gnuware.com/icecast/chap_09_07.html

If you are able to stream your audio using linux and oddcast, please let us know.

Also, if you could put together a document for other users on how to setup and configure the system, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mason,

I found my old post on the approximate surface area of the rain
collector (I guessed 3" x 5", should be pretty close).

If WUHU registered a .81 increase in the rain total then you can
calculate the approximate volume of the water you poured.

If the rain collector is approximately 15 sq inches then:

.81 (in) x 15 (sq. inches) = 12.15 (cubic inches).

12.15 cubic inches is approximately 6.73 fluid oz.

Is it possible that you poured 6.73 oz versus 4 oz?

Thanks.

Dickie,
If you go to the following web page:
http://home.comcast.net/~wuhu_software/
You will find a link at the top of the page to the new page for the
Live NWS Broadcasts.
It lists a few weather radios that are listed as having an audio
output jack.
In addition to the output jack, you might need an external antenna,
depending on how close you are to the nearest NWS tower and what
obstacles might be in the way.
Alan, gave a link to a scanner which he has had good luck with, I
see.

It does not have to be very fancy, just a radio that will get a
clear signal and has an audio output jack.
Beware though, some weather radio's have an external "alert" jack,
that is not the same as an audio output jack.

Hope this helps.

My rain gauge measures 2.25 inches by 4.875 inches.  So converting I figure mine was 4.9 fl oz.

Sneak preview the all-new Yahoo.com. It's not radically different. Just radically better.

Richard, it's too bad that you didn't realize what you were seeing when you actually saw it, but it's better than not seeing it at all! It's supposed to pass by here again in about 10-15 minutes from now (and I promise not to send another post out about it!). I'm on my way to go out and let my eyes adjust to the dark before it comes by.

I got to see that a number of years ago while I was still living in England.  I was walking home from the pub when two bright lights slowly passed overhead.  On a hunch, I checked the NASA website, and sure enough, it was the recently undocked Atlantis and ISS.

Quite cool!

Just a follow up here - there are two ways to do this, if I'm understanding the sparse user guide. I've turned the alarms "off", but do not know if that's going to disable the entire SAME or just disable the sound when the tones are activated. If this doesn't work, I will go in and manually zero-out the codes and see what that does. Looks like I'll have to wait till mid-week for the test before knowing the outcome.

Thanks.

Deborah,
Will be interesting to see what happens, but my guess is that it will
just turn off the audible alarm when SAME alert is received.
Mine has the same function, but give it a try to see.

I'm just wondering, how long Rapid Fire on WU will be in beta? And what is the plan of use after the beta period? I'm simply curious. I mean, I realize the data is being seen on weather pages in general, but I'm wondering if the individual station pages will be used differently. The flash feature is awesome ... will the background pics become user-chosen? Will the flash be incorporated in to the main weather pages?

Just a few questions from your resident nosey WU neighbor.  :-)
