Maybe I am looking at the wrong site. I do not see much at this site.
Appears to be mostly airports, no direct upload of data, just links to
individual websites and lots of advertisements. Am I missing something?
I must be as I do not see this site as a "competitive" site to WU at
all.

I have to agree with you, Steve. When this conversation first came up, I went to the site and didn't see anything "competitive". Then I, too, may be missing the real deal.

Thanks for posting this ... I wanted to say the same thing. Thought I'd wait to see what transpired from the original issue.

Has anyone had any issues with the Heavy Weather up loader and Java?

I get these occasionally

Is there any connection?

Personal Weather Stations are both fun and serious.

I care only that my weather stations is operating correctly/accurately as I possibly can and that my data goes to CWOP which is used by NOAA.

After that, I “like” seeing my data on the WWW anywhere we can get it. If someone one makes money with publicly available data fine with me. If it were private (single use only) I would expect to get a commission of some sort. Getting the data out to several places is good, but at some point the bandwidth of sending to say 5,10, etc services would get to be cumbersome.

I joined CWOP as my reason to use WUHU and because it was there I joined WU. I never joined AWEAKS when it became available (through laziness maybe). But at some point, if there were, 10 outputs that I send data to every five minutes, when does that start effecting me bandwidth wise. When I am asleep, I don’t care…When I am downloading important “Junk”, it might slow me down…

Balance…where is the balance point?

Charles

The weatherforyou.com/HAMweather Personal Weather Station Program
currently has over 8,000 personal weather stations registered. The
data from these stations is sent directly to our servers and is
included with local forecasts on weatherforyou.com along with credit
to the station providing the data and a link to their web site, if
any. This program has been in existence since 2000 and is currently
supported by at least six weather station software packages plus quite
a few who have written their own interface to our system.

The maps with links to weather stations are not related to the
real-time data program. There are stations on the map that do not
send data (mostly because their software doesn't support it, but I
wanted to promote them, too) and stations that send data which are not
on the map (by the request of the contributor).

The weatherforyou.com support and promotion of personal weather
stations goes back to 1998. A group of people approached the "big"
weather sites about adding personal weather stations. The common
reply was personal weather stations were "...not relevant to (their)
content." So I started weatherforyou.com. A couple years later WU
decided they were relevant after all.

If all you thought you saw was links and ads you didn't look very
deep. ;) First off, there are fewer ads than other sites, and no
popups or pop-unders, deceitful advertising ("you're visitor 9,999,999
and won"), no suggestive ads and all ads are appropriate for all ages.
Beyond the ads there are many maps, radar, forecasts, current
conditions, Flash weather videos and more. It is currently ranked #8
in the news/weather category, provides the free weather "snapshots" to
tens of thousands of sites worldwide and custom weather solutions to
other sites.

The site's primary focus is still to serve personal weather stations.
If you can think of any way that we can serve you I'm always open to
suggestions.

I don't think personal weather stations are in competition. However
after the success of weatherforyou.com back in the late 1990s and
early 2000s other sites decided to embrace personal weather stations
and include them as relevant sources of information. One "big" site
(not WU) made it very clear to me at a convention back in 2002 they
considered weatherforyou.com as a threat on many levels. There have
been attempts to purchase all or part of weatherforyou.com, but none
would guarantee to keep giving personal weather stations credit and
not distribute or sell their data. One site wanted to buy the data,
but it's not mine to sell... it belongs to the personal weather
station owners.

You may be interested in knowing then weatherforyou.com generates a
file with personal weather station data that is picked up by NOAA four
times an hour. We've been providing this data to them for at least
five years. ;)

Thank you for the information on your web site. I am sure you have
done much work on the site and are fulfilling someones needs or
desires. I mean no disrespect to you or your website, I am simply
expressing my opinion!
I have further explored your website as you suggested.
A comment was made in this forum earlier, regarding competitive web
sites, nothing about us as PWS owners competing.
We are all free to upload our PWS data to whomever and what ever
services we choose. This is great, we have choices !!
I made a statement and I make no appologies for it, it is simply my
personal opinion(which has not changed upon further review).
I do appreciate the offer to provide input, however I personally will
stick to WU, CWOP & AWEKAS for my uploading and I feel good about
that. I feel that through these uploads I am doing a service, while I
enjoy my hobby.
I am not sure what the comment that was made regarding someone who
happened to agree with my earlier post was trying to say or imply.
Rest assured that what ever I post in an open forum is my opinion and
my opinion alone !!

You make it sound like it's some hobby site. Rest assured,
weatherforyou.com LLC is a company that serves weather needs from
individuals to FedEx.

And you don't feel you would be doing a service by uploading to
weatherforyou.com? How is uploading to WU a service whereas uploading
to weatherforyou.com would not be? I'm curious because we want to
serve personal weather stations and, if we're not, I want to know
where we're falling short.

Regarding your statement below I mentioned that I felt I was providing
a service uploading to WU, CWOP & AWEKAS. You left the last two off !!
Please do not take what I write out of context. I personally feel that
the above is a nice package to upload to. I do not intend to upload to
your site, that is my choice. I do not need to justify my decision to

Hello Steve,

I quit uploading to CWOP and AWEKAS because it seems they didn't like all my data; I still have accounts with them, but choose to NOT upload to them.

Jaye Ellen,
I do get error messages from AWEKAs, but rarely get any from CWOP. I
wonder what it is that they don't like about your data? Was it
constant errors?

Actually I think CWOP and AWEKAS are excellent services and I
encourage uploading to them as well. That's why I didn't include
them. I just don't understand what you have against weatherforyou.com
a site that was started to serve personal weather stations and has
donated much to that community over the last nine years. What would
have to change in order for you to consider sharing your data?

And I don't understand why when a company has a representative in the
community they're trying to serve it's interpreted that they're
"small" or "serving someone" but the companies that never participate
in forums such as this get all the respect. When was the last time
anyone from WU posted here? Sure WU is bigger than weatherforyou.com,
but weatherforyou.com is bigger than CWOP or AWEKAS.

Yes, it's your decision not to share your data. But if
weatherforyou.com isn't serving personal weather stations we want to
know why.

I'm not looking to argue. All I want is feedback as to why one or
more personal weather stations won't send data to weatherforyou.com
but will to WU. weatherforyou.com was started with a primary goal of
serving personal weather stations. If we're not, we want to know what
needs to change!

Let me ask this, because apparently I have missed something on the WFU site:

Please explain the advantages of WFU versus WU.

Also, wouldn't it be possibly detrimental to submit the PWS data to NOAA via WFU since submitting it to CWOP also sends it to NOAA? To put it another way, wouldn't their getting info from the same station from two difference sources be potentially damaging to the outcome of their analysis?

Joe - it seems the negative connotation that started all this mess was from the "competitor" statement exchanged between you and WUHU. That's in the past. Wasn't nice, but in the past.  <g>  Since all of us here are primarily WU PWS's, your providing a comparison outline (of sorts) would help.

Lastly, my agreeing with Steve on his post earlier was simply as I stated. He posted the same things I had been wondering and thinking - I merely seconded his post. I see no bickering here (yet), but a topic containing healthy opinions and discussions. This (my) specific post is an attempt to learn, and give WFU any and all benefit of promoting their site. If there is something that anyone on the list finds beneficial, great! They can choose to send their data in. If not, so goes the game of free commerce, and freedom of choice.

Send it on down here, Steve ... the weather can't decide whether it should be summer, fall or winter. My kids can't understand why I dress them in shorts one day and heavy coats & thermals the day before.

Wait - let me clarify ... send the cold and snow - keep the 120mph winds, OK???

I think it's good to have your data on WU AND WFY, actually. It all
promotes the growth of the weather community. So I don't look at it
as "versus" but if you're going to consider WU also consider WFY.

- Data from personal weather stations is included with local forecasts
as the primary current conditions along with clear credit to the
contributor and a link to their web site (if applicable). One of the
contributors to the weatherforyou.com program provided these
statistics for their web site in October as to the referrals from
various sources...

direct 1,580 visits 68.67%
google 173 visits 7.52%
wunderground.com 126 visits 5.48%
weatherforyou.com 107 visits 4.65%

So, like I say, not as big as WU, but close. ;)

- The data you submit can be used on the weatherforyou.com Snapshots
which can be used on your web site or others. I even allow you to
link the image back to your own site if it's used on another site. So
it's a great way to promote your site. I also host
non-weatherforyou.com branded images for personal weather stations.

- If you use the HAMweather scripts you can display your data and the
data of other stations with their permission. One example of this is
a regional weather network set up by northbayweather.com, operated by
the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat (a New York Times company). You also
have free access to a METAR mirror which has data from METAR, RAWS and
other non-traditional sources meaning you can display weather for more
places.

- Coming soon... your data can be used on HAMvid Basic (
http://www.hamvid.com/news.php?n=6 ) so you can put Flash weather
videos on your web site with your data.

- We're part of the personal weather community and have been for
almost nine years. I personally participate in and/or monitor the
forums of the software that supports weatherforyou.com. I also am a
regular on wxforum.net

This has been accomodated for by NOAA. For stations that send data
through CWOP their weatherforyou.com data is listed as a "backup" to
CWOP. For stations that don't send through CWOP the weatherforyou.com
data is there.

>Since all of us here are primarily

Glad to. And, like I say, if there's something we can do to serve the
community we want to know! Much of what we do has come from
suggestions from personal weather station owners. We're in the
community and are always looking for ideas.

I'm glad you see it that way. Always glad to participate in healthy
discussions. :)

>This (my) specific post is an attempt to

The benefit will, hopefully, all go back to personal weather stations.
Honestly, if someone goes to weatherforyou.com, finds a personal
weather station web site in their area and never needs a "big" site
again (including weatherforyou.com) then our goal has been met. That
might be contrary to traditional business sense, but we want to lead
people to personal weather station web sites, not take personal
weather station data and use it so people will always want to come
back to our site. We're 100% debt free and don't have any venture
capital telling us what to do.

I just thought of what is, perhaps, a better way to ask my question of
the group. Why do you post to Weather Underground and what makes it
important to be associated with them? Maybe if I understood your
motives for that it would help me understand where weatherforyou.com
could improve.

My own web site (grantspassweather.com) sends data to WU for the same
reason I send it to weatherforyou.com... so people will find out about
it. :)

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

As I stated before, I personally was just trying to get data to NOAA thru CWOP originally and WU was there when I started.

I am concerned that there could be and overload point on the WUHU software and/or my data connection if I start sending to too many different places. You have adequately answered the question about duplicate info it seems. I still will ask CWOP at some point.

My initial look at your site impression is that in many ways your site is as good as WU. I hit the “get a forecast” and saw nothing but NWS stations reporting for my area picks. Your PWS section is a bit buried to find, but once I found a station on that map I liked the “get a forecast” as much as WU. You do give good credit there. They have the edge it seems on promoting “hey we got these ‘other’ stations is my first impression. I have no problem with you making money (ads) on your site if that is what bothers some people (competitive?).

PS WeatherBug “bugs” me that their profit model seems to horde data and that my city is overlooked. I congratulate them for making money but there is nothing for me.

That, being said, I would like to see my data listed on your site also. I would support your inclusion based on merit so far. I don’t send to AWEAKS (yeah, I have been lazy) and as long as we can choose I happy. It all comes down to a viable WUHU with so many choices possible in the future.

Charles

CW4870

PS. Full disclosure, I fear that I may not be a WUHU much longer since my anemometer has failed and I am preparing to go to a different weather station. But, I may have to make a choice if my new station is supported by WUHU and I would l ”Like” to have my data on WFU.

I totally agree with you Jaye Ellen.
I would like to upload my data to anyone who would like to have it, but I am willing to run one software package only. If wuhu_software can and will modify the software to allow an additional site, I would register on weather for you. If that does not happen, I may explore one of the other programs to see if they are compatible.
Personal Weather Stations are rare in this part of the world.(Philippines) and I'd like to get my data to as many people as I can.

With CWOP it just seemed that my data just didn't fit too well with other stations; I tried to use Tweaks, but all that did was mess other stuff up.  AWEKAS rejected my data one time too often, but I still use the info for myself.  This happened a fair bit of time ago ... and I just do NOT want to fight with anyone.  So, not uploading stops the errors.  Problem solved, y'know?
