I have just uploaded a new version of the macros for translators:
http://web.ticino.com/multilingual/ms_word_macros_for_translators.htm

I have deleted the Altavista parallel text search macros (which have ceased to
work following major changes at Altavista including the removal of several
interesting search functions) and replaced them with Google parallel text search
macros.

Have a go and let me know whether they work properly for your particular
language combination. All feedback will enable me to improve their
effectiveness.

Altavista no longer offers truncation (or the letter wildcard "*"), so searching
for

     glossar*

to find "glossary", "glossaries" etc. no longer works.

One search engine that does offer truncation is www.exalead.com

I have also added a new macro for calculating the number of characters in a pdf
document and the cost of translating the pdf document.

Dear wwwsift member,

If you have downloaded the MS Word macros for translators at...
http://web.ticino.com/multilingual/ms_word_macros_for_translators.htm
... in the past, then you may have noticed that some of them are no longer
working properly.

This could be due to
a) software updates on your computer or
b) the fact that some of the dictionary websites referred to by the dictionary
look-up macros have moved or no longer exist.

A new version of the macros is now available (free download) featuring new free
online dictionaries and updated macros to work with new software versions.

You can download them for free from here:
http://web.ticino.com/multilingual/ms_word_macros_for_translators.htm

Simply identify the current location of the file macros_for_translators.dot
on your computer and replace the old file with the new version.

If you have never installed these macros before and would like to try them,
simply go to the website above, download the file file
macros_for_translators.dot and read the instructions given in that file.

If you notice any macros not working properly, I would appreciate the feedback.

One last thing: the Altavista parallel text search macros are not 100% reliable
now that Altavista has modified its search facilities, restricting the use of
brackets to refine a search. Sorry about that. Am working on it!

of the time you need to navigate the various sections of the target
language website to locate a translation. To do so, take a look at

Dear wwwsift users,

If you have used the WWW Search Interfaces for Translators recently, you may
have noticed that Google is having trouble interpreting special characters sent
to it through the interfaces. For example, you might see the following search
string generated:

ozl intitle:abk?rzungen OR intitle:abk?rzungsverzeichnis OR
intitle:abk?rzungsliste OR intitle:akronyme

...instead of:

ozl intitle:abkürzungen OR intitle:abkürzungsverzeichnis OR
intitle:abkürzungsliste OR intitle:akronyme

If this happens, you will need to manually change the question marks to the
correct characters. This may be inconvenient but is only necessary for those
strings that include special characters.

This may be a temporary problem, so I shan't modify the interfaces yet (also
because this would involve quite a bit of work, and if Google decides to change
things AGAIN...)

Sorry about the inconvenience, but I hope the interfaces will still be of use to
you!
