WWDC is over, so it's time to focus on shutting this list down.

The new list, for those who haven't heard this a dozen times already,
is xcoder-talk@.... Please change your
subscriptions if you're interested in continuing to lurk or join in
the light MacOS X coding babble.

This list will get sent into moderate only mode by August 18th (this
coming friday), and I won't be enabling any moderated mail. :-)
Effectively, it's going into archive-only mode.

Please subscribe to the new list if you're interested in continuing...

As it looks like I am not able to make tonight's meeting I did a call for
volunteers. One of
the new kids on the block has raised his hand so tonight's meeting starts with a
presentation on iStumbler, Desk Lamp & a few others, as they are open source you
guys
should have fun.

As one of our newest members and this being his first meeting be kind to him...
(plus he is looking for a Mac job for those hiring...)

George,

Saw your note on the list and i've got a 15-20 minute presentation setup to
introduce
iStumbler[1], and since I'll be attending the meeting I'm happy to run through
the slide
deck.

I've also just released a spotlight search tool, Desk Lamp[2] with some
interesting new
features, and could do a quick demo of that as well.

I'm just starting to get into the Seattle job scene so this would be a great
opportunity to
get my name out there.

Best,
Alf

Can someone do a last minute presentation for tonight's meeting?

With the strong possibly of moving to San Diego (it looks like I will be packing
for a temp

unless a
miracle happens I regrettably will have to bag tonight's meeting.

I am sorry for the last minute notice.

Don't.

Use CFPreferencs/NSPreferences to manipulate it, or read it into a

The Property List Editor opens both xml and binary plists transparently.

To convert at the command line: 'plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.mail.plist'

Apple's code example to load and save from a binary plist:

Hi all,

Is there any one get this problem like me:
If in the "header.h" file I miss ';' at the end of one of
prototype.
when I compile project, instead they point out where and what cause
error, I got unclear error message in its ".c" file at the first
routine's definition such as :
error: parm types given both in parmlist and separately
or:
error: parse error before "{" token.

Some my file it includes bunch of header files, it is so hard for me
which one cause problem.

Do have to change some thing in set up for compiler or XCode's
behavior this way?

Thanks for any input.

ah, thanks for the tip. I'll try the unbind on the controller(s)
before closing - I'm curious now - but I've since changed the
implementation
so that's a singleton - at least working around the problem for now.
The reference counts are stable, but I had to deal with changing the
data within my controller.
(Of course, that introduced its own subtleties, having to do arrays
being reset underneath the ArrayController - and combo boxes not
triggering the observer when I changed their selection
programmatically - never did figure that one out - but I worked
around that as well.)

I didn't quite follow the second idea in there about instantiating
another Objectcontroller and populating that, but I'll think about it
and see if makes any more sense.

I'm a little surprised that this problem has been known since at
least 2004 and there's no mention of it in Apple's documentation.
What are they doing down there?

When it comes down to it, working with Bindings probably help to
eliminate some code for me, but introduced enough of their own
complexity,
and weird side-effects, that I have to wonder whether simply
implementing delegates and datasources wouldn't have ended up saving
me time - at least
then I'd be debugging my own code instead of trying to figure out
what Apple's is doing!
It's been a long day, but I've made progress.

I'm still missing a few things about the use of bindings it seems.

one thing that's really bugging me at the moment: my controller
object never seems to be fully released, and when i create another
one, i receive observeValue calls for
both the old and new objects. When I load the nib and instantiate it
to the proper fileOwner the retainCount on the controller is 5, but
when I'm all done with it the retainCount is 6.
So, even after my release it never gets dealloc, never removes its
observers, and (now) crashes when trying to change the dictionary
that's being observed.

I'm thinking that when loading the nib and establishing all of the
bindings, these are holding onto the reference. since i establish
them by loading from a nib, i'm not sure how to release them to allow
things to be freed.

while i might just change my controller to a singleton, that's more
of a workaround than a solution. how does get rid of bindings?

As I am interpreting your question it sounds like you want the
NSWindow to draw normally, then you want to draws your "stuff" on top
of the window, then you want the remaining NSViews to draw.

If that is the case why not simply insert a NSView on top of your
window and under your remaining NSViews?

Probably because an NSWindow is not an NSView, but it contains them.

Seems like subclassing -display or -update would be one place to try it.
There's also notifications about "willUpdate" and "didUpdate".

Poking around in the docs some more - it would seem that the frame
view is responsible for the background,
and then they add a transparent content view that contains all of the
other views.
You could replace that with your own view, then you'll be in the
standard drawing chain, receiving the display
message first, before all of the other views.
Look at setContentView for details.
