Sitting in the store now, I see an auditorium, but nothing like a video
camera set up with a streaming server to enable this sort of thing.
Would be neat though...

Hello, to all you new X coders! I love my Mac, but am here today because I
wanted your
group to know about a conference that is held in Oct in Tacoma at the LaQuinta
Inn. It is
platform neutral and all user groups are invited. We have a committee planning
this event
and I just dropped in to let you know that anyone in this UG who would like to
get involved
in Raincoast 2005 is welcome. http://www.raincoast.info
I would, as president of my local Macintosh User Group--Northwest Apple
Pickers-- be
interested in someone from your group coming to one of our meetings to talk
about
"what's under the hood" in our new machines. Is that something you'd entertain?
Perhaps a
couple of quick "hacks". I already installed the double arrows on my scroll bars
through
the terminal. (I love 'em) I'd like to be able to assign key strokes to certain
actions, so if
that is something you can show that would be great. Almost anything is more than
our
group currently knows.
I look forward to someone responding and reading the postings. I hope to learn
more
about coding in X. I will have your meeting advertised in our newsletter and on
our
website, if you don't mind. That way other OS X people might find you. If you
don't want
me to list you, just let me know. But I'm happy to help you find 'like minded'
individuals.
Good luck.
KaCe (the C is for Cecelia, but that was taken, thus my moniker, Cecelyah...
<grin>)
doesnt the store have full AV capabilities?
It might be something worth considering for future meetings, if not tonight.

I'm no expert on anything Cocoa; I've only dabbled a bit. I also have
only light BSD sockets experience, so I can't offer any info there.
But for Cocoa classes, check out NSURL, NSHost, NSSocketPort, and
NSFileHandle (which works with sockets as well as disk files). Also
NSNetService and NSNetServiceBrowser, for Rendezvous.
Wish I could make it to the biweekly meetings; due to a kid at home and
my wife taking night classes Tues/Thurs for a while, I'll just have to
listen in on the list. I *am* planning on being at the Tiger Tech Talk
on Monday, Nov 22, though.

I've used GDB extensively on Solaris, HPUX and Linux platforms, Darwin
should be a breeze, right?
Also wouldn't it make sense to intro gdb as part of the compiler
toolchain set?

What are the 'standard' APIs for network comm? I know BSD sockets
well, but I was wondering if there was a Cocoa/Carbon specific API and
what advantages would I get from using them.
James is correct though, using a single thread of execution you can
watch over hundreds or thousands of network connections/sockets.
Doing 10k+ network connections is stretching though - it's a pointless
exercise imho, since virtually no apps need that many conns, if you
want to do anything significant with the requests you are going to
blow away the comp time available with 1 thread of execution on 1 CPU.
But yes, select() is your friend if you need to do that anyways :-)
It allows you to sleep most of the time in the kernel until a FD
(socket/file descriptor/etc) becomes available for read or write, then
it returns flow of control back to you.

I think I can handle an IB presentation. Not so sure about Xcode or GDB as I
just use the most minimal and simple things.

The next meeting of the Seattle, Xcoder's, programming /
Cocoa / technical special interest group will be held at:
The University Village Apple Store (Seattle).
Tuesday 16 November 2004, starting at 6:30 PM
This meeting will focus on an Introduction to Development Tools
I will be acting as Toastmaster, I am in need of volunteers to do
brief introductions to Xcode, IB, GDB, Resourcer, Icon tools, and/or
any other tools you find useful in your Macintosh development.
We have one volunteer to do a brief introduction to source code
control, please let me know what you would be willing to give a
brief introduction on, remember this is just a brief overview, you
do not have to be an expert. Think of it as a good topic to get
you feet wet. I NEED YOUR HELP, PLEASE VOLUNTEER.
I hope to see you there.
Hi,
In order to create a file with matlab type, I use matOpen(), that one in
<mat.h>. Beside
#include, I add the path of <mat.h> in "Include search path" in Xcode, it's
compiled but it
has error when it runs:
ZeroLink: unknown symbol '_matOpen'
FastCTD has exited due to signal 6 (SIGABRT).
What library do I need to link? Where can I add this link in Xcode?
Thanks for your reply in advance.
Mai.
It has been awhile, but what I believe you're looking for is 'select'
and 'fcntl'. 'select' allows you to query a set of file descriptors
for read/write/exception without blocking unless there's nothing to be
done. 'fcntl' allows you to place a file descriptor into a non-block
read/write mode. The terminology used here is consistent with BSD
sockets which Winsock is based upon.
Hope that helps. If I'm wrong let me know so that I may refresh my memory.

I'm currently taking a class that is covering network clients and
servers. Most of the discussions are on the Windows platform. We are
supposed to write a network client that can do 10's of thousands of
connections. One method is to use IO completion ports in Windows.
Does OS X have a similar concept? If so, what is it? I've been
browsing the docs and can't really find anything that seems to be the
same thing.
Thanks,
Andrew
I am signing our group up on the Apple site so we can receive referrals and
possibly
goodies in the future.
I have signed myself up as Ambassador and Meeting Coordinator.
I need to add two more contacts, any volunteers?
- I will need your name, address and phone number.
In particular I could use someone to be the referral (contact) person.
Also would anyone like to be our token bureaucrat? (Meeting notes, treasurer
etc.?)

There is a Park & Ride just after the 502 on ramp, across the street from
Newport Grill[?]. If
you stay in the on ramp lane, you'll get off at 108th. From there go right and
through the

We have been given permission to post a sign at the upcoming Tiger Talk for the
purpose

I will bring a tripod to display it on.
If anyone has access to a large format printer and is willing to donate a sign,
preferably
"D" size (I'll settle for "C"), please let me know. We will need it for the

Anybody good at logo's? I am thinking of copying the Xcode icon and
superimposing it

appreciated.

I've been using it, and really like it. I never quite got through the

Just wanted to chime in myself. 6:30's a bit hard for me since I work

Hello all,
So I just found out about our bold band of Xcoders from http://www.macfixit.com/
and
had to join the Yahoo Xcoders Group right away. I'm looking forward to
participating,
meeting fellow Apple users, and learning more about Xcode.
Before I can start participating I need to clear my Tuesday evenings, which
means I won't
be able to meet you guys until Tuesday Nov 16th. I've already got Xcode and
Panther
running on my trusty Pismo Powerbook G3.
My skill with Xcode is rather limited, and I want to learn more, so this group
is going to
help motivate me to smarten up! LOL!

The next meeting of the Seattle, Xcoder's, programming /

The University Village Apple Store (Seattle).
Tuesday 09 November 2004, starting at 6:30 PM

so is there is anyone in the group who actually is a bindings
expert we would love to see you in attendance.

I hope to see you there.
Hi James, and Welcome!
Tonight's meeting was fairly sparsely attended (no big surprise, as I
imagine most folks were/still are watching election returns), but was
fun and a scattershot of discussions. One of the items under discussion
was "where are we meeting next week" which I think George will be
posting about at some point (I don't know the answer, or if we have a
place).
Another, which might be of more interest, was in figuring out how to
set up a hands-on workshop for beginners. Purely at the conception
stage, but if you've interest in doing this on a Saturday sometime,
we'd love to know. For the record, it probably wouldn't be until after
New Years, but it's something.

Hi Xcoders,
my name is Jamie, nearly everyone calls me James. I'm located in
Bothell, WA. I'm an INTJ Aquarius, I love high performance hardware,
and new technology. I'm new to Apple and OS X. I'm looking forward to
learning all I can and becoming productive in this new environment.
For the past 8 yrs I have been developing software at Sierra On-Line.
The majority of my experience revolves around graphics and related
APIs. One of the major attractions of OS X for me is the melding of
graphics HW within the OS and how it will be exposed.
This group was pointed out to me by a friend. I don't know how I can
contribute to the group, as I've said I'm a noob, but I'll do my best.
James
Reminder, Today:
The first technical meeting of the Seattle, Xcoder's, programming /
Cocoa / technical
special interest group will be held at:
The University Village Apple Store (Seattle).
Tuesday 02 November 2004, starting at 6:30 PM
This meeting will focus on Macintosh OSX fundamentals as it relates
to programming.
I would appreciate it if someone would assist me in the presentation
by doing a brief
presentation on the Unix layer.
I hope to see you there.

Thanks to Joseph Heck for setting up a yahoo group for us at
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xcoder/>. I encourage everyone
to join it. I will continue to send eMails for another month, however
I hope that our communications start to transition to that list.
We were not able to get a separate presentation from the Tech Talk
team in regards to Tiger, however I did receive the following:
// I checked with the John Geleynse (heading the Tech Talk team)
// and unfortunately they will not have the bandwidth to do this at
// this time. However, it would be helpful if you could help us
// drive attendance to our Seattle event.
So it looks like they still have plenty of openings:
