Hi Jason, and welcome to the group. XDP is actually quite a bit different from
the Planetweb series of browsers. XDP is basically a heavy modification and
translation of the Japanese Dream Passport 3 web browser, which in turn is built
upon an early version of netfront. For page rendering and javascript, DP was
superior to PW in several ways, but it was a bit slower. It also lacked the java
applet runtime that the final PW browser had, and has a comparitivly more simple
IRC chat client. The user interface of DP was better and more stable, and DP was
capable of mpeg1 video, wav audio, and midi playback where PW was capable of
sofdec video and small mp3 playback. There are several more details I'm probably
forgetting, but in retrospect, the biggest push to use Passport back in the day
was the built in Ch@b (messenger), Ch@btalk (voip), and ISAO Myroom (early
social network) which were awesome Japanese only features. What makes XDP
special is its painstakingly created skin, which looks even more professional
than the official release from Sega/Netfront. Its truly a thing of beauty, and
the extra content that Excalibur has included with his releases is very special.
Stuff like game saves, javascript games, bookmarklets, etc. Its not practically
usefull as a browser for the 2009 internet, but its definitly fun and worthy of
anyone's collection.
